Kololi Beach Club and surround

Advantages: Great place.
Disadvantages: Watch for how you part with your cash.

...I have stayed at this hotel now on two occasions and would go again any time. Its a pretty basic hotel but comfortable and the staff are very friendly and take great pride in there work, especially it has to be said, the cleaning staff. Mind you, the pool cleaner does seem to take an age as well, wonder if he is on an hourly rate? Definately would advise hiring a fridge for your room from the hotel. My only bad thing to say about the hotel is the driveway. Not bad at first but it is quite a trek after a few days. Access to the beach is straight off the hotel grounds. Not so many bumsters this year.( A quick guide to them after ). I've always found the weather to be great in November/December. Hot during the day and comfortable at night. As for Kololi. The restauarants basically are selling the same deal in food or drink...

A Fantastic Holiday

Advantages: Large spacious grounds and friendly staff
Disadvantages: No air conditioning

...I visited The Gambia a few years ago and it was one of the best holidays I have ever had. My family stayed at the Senegambia Beach Hotel, in the town of Kololi. I would recommend staying in Kololi, as it contains the most restaurants and bars. Alternatively, there are hotels in Bajul, the Capital, however there are less amenities there. The Senegambia Hotel is a self-contained complex, with rooms based in blocks. There are about 8 rooms in each building block. This provides a bit of privacy and makes you feel as if you are not crammed in with hundreds of people. The hotel is set on huge grounds, with plenty of places to go. The grounds contain lots of trees, grass and greenery, which is nice to look at. Also, there are many exotic birds and wildlife on site, which can be readilly seen. A set of particularly amusing inhabitants...

Gambia 'The Smiling Coast'

Advantages: Sunshine, Mid-haul flight, Everyone happy and helpful
Disadvantages: Friendship is not free!

...of wildlife, we were in very close proximity to a family of baboons, but felt in good hands with our guide. The entrance fee includes a trip down the Mandina Bolon in a dug-out canoe. If you like wildlife and birds The Gambia is most definately a place to visit. Bilijo Monkey Park in Kololi is free to enter - bear in mind you might get followed all the way down the beach with offers to show you around the Monkey Park - we refused and used one of the Guides based at the entrance, for a small tip/fee. Best time to visit is at dawn to see the birds, in the afternoon we saw groups of monkeys, which were unbelievably tame. Food and drink in The Gambia was much more western than I expected. But try the local Gambian dishes - the Chicken Yassa is delicious. Good restaurants which I would recommend in Kololi are: Jo Jo's, Paradiso and Ali Babas Garden...

Review of General: The Gambia

A real Gambian Experience, Do's & Don'ts

Advantages: only 6 hours away, completly different world, friendly, great beaches and culture
Disadvantages: some hassle in busy tourist places

...This year I visited with some friend for the first time, but surely not the last time, the lovely country of The Gambia. Before leaving we orientated ourself on the internet and through the travel agents and we decided to only book a flight and arrange the accommodation directly for the first 2 nights in Gunjur Beach Lodge. This was a fantastic choice as it was perfectly located on the beach but also in the middle of the day to day life of the Gambians. We stayed the whole week in the lodge as it was just perfect for us. We are not the kind of tourist that want to have busy shopping streets, cafees etc around us. We want peace and tranquility. We visited the resorts, had a good time there but enjoyed our little spot in Gunjur. If you stay in the resorts of Kololi, Kotu, Cape Point etc and you want to have a chill out day (or 2) you...

Tafbellissimo!

Advantages: very personal service, friendly, clean, bargin end of price scale
Disadvantages: typical african moments when water cuts off!

...friendly evryone is out there and the Tafbel staff are no exception. Although they are all very layed back and permenantly work on GMT (Gambian Maybe Time!) we were never left waiting around. Anyone you spoke to was always up for a chat and also willing (as we discovered) to show you the sights of the Gambia for a very reasonable rate on their day off. Their local tips really made our holiday! Environ; The Kololi area is bursting with restaurants of all origins; arabian, english, chinese, indian, lebanese, gambian. The local craft market is 500yards from the hotel entrance and the beach is a 5mins walk through the grounds of a neighbouring hotel. There are 3 supermarkets also very near. The tourist taxi rank can be easily found on the way to the craft market. Although flanked by two far more extravagant (and expensive) hotels the Tafbel...

A 5* holiday for a 3* price!

Advantages: Fantastic lush gardens, luxurious rooms, friendly attentive staff
Disadvantages: Expensive drinks in the hotel

...a fresh (and I mean fresh!) seafood buffet which was really nice, especially, if you like huge prawns, caught that morning! There was a local band playing and we had a really good evening. This brings me onto my only real gripe. I don't mind paying a little extra in a hotel when compared to prices outside, but I don't expect drinks to be three times the price! A JulBrew (the local beer, which is as good as any you'd find back home) costs the equivalent of 60 pence in a bar on the Kololi strip while the hotel prices were similar to those in England. There was a similar discrepancy in the food prices. You can get around this by buying Julbrew at the supermarket and then drinking the bottles from the minibar, replacing them as you go! Cheeky, I know, but these bottles cost only 30 pence! (wouldn't you do the same???). There were some great...

...in a building with no air conditioning...hot Tennis Courts - 2 well kept concrete with nets etc...good. Volleyball Court - active sports for teams in hotel daily. Archery - again another activity done daily...not bed area.. Pool - various pool games daily..Pool not huge..about 20M Jog Circuit - In this heat get real. some do though... Table Tennis - 2 standard Tables..good local players.. Pitch & Putt - not bad small course in Hotel grounds..watch the lizards.. All the games have the equipment you need to play and mostly is of standard quality. The people all say hello. The hotel building was quite standard with European Hotels, but no TV, watered down drinks of the alcoholic variety, Bottled Coke Fanta etc...great.. Disco nightly really didn't happen all that well. Hotel in great location for Kololi...
