Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Advantages: Good service
Disadvantages: none
...A first time traveller to Kota Kinabalu need not be afraid of not finding good accomodation. Kota Kinabalu has a very good range of suitable hotels for both the tourist and business traveller.
The Shangri-la Tanjung Aru has long been established as a popular beach front resort hotel which is located approximately 20 minutes from the centre of the city. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere and a very good buffet breakfast spread which even includes japanese noodles and sushi. Prices are relatively high but promotional offers during non peak seasons can be very good.
A newer and undoubtably my favourite hotel is the Sutera Harbour Hotel, located next to Magellan and the Royal Yacht Club. The rooms have very big windows which afford stunning views of the sunset on the clear waters or if you opt for the left wing, then a view of the 18...

Kota Kinabaluuuuuu.....
Advantages: Beautiful sceneray and wildlife
Disadvantages: Long flights
...In October this year, I took my 1st holiday abroad. My girlfriend and I decided to go to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia as we both enjoy wildlife and it is somewhere she has never been. We stayed in Kota Kinabalu which is often affectionately called KK for 3 weeks and had a wonderful time.
Flying to KK
We flew from London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpar. The flight to Kuala Lumpar took 13 hours (which was quite harsh as it was my 1st ever flight) From there we flew to another place (which I can not remember the name off) which took about 2 hours, and then a further 2 hours to Kota Kinabalu. The only downfall to the holiday were the long flights but its necessary if you want to visit these beautiful places.
Staying in KK
We stayed in a five star resort while we were in KK which was very reasonably priced. We paid £900 per person...

Borneo, Borneo, Wherefore Art Thou, Borneo
Advantages: Unique wildlife experience
Disadvantages: leaches
...having done various safaris and other wildlife watching adventures a primate expedition seemed like a good next trip. Primate watching in Africa is far more expensive and politically potentially dangerous, and at short notice proved to be difficult to get appropriate permits, so we chose to do Borneo first, then Africa at a later stage. This was probably wise given the rate at which Borneo is disappearing.
Getting there
The usual entry point for northern Borneo is Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah which has modern almost western-style hotels and an airport with flights from Kuala Lumpur. Many people stay in Kota Kinabalu (usually, annoyingly called KK by tourists. I insisted on using its proper name and was regularly corrected by other knowledgeable tourists who thought they were a couple of pages ahead of me in the guidebook) KK (oops, I...

KK - Definately more than OK!!
Advantages: Loads to do, great wildlife, great scenery, lovely locals
Disadvantages: Ran out of time to see everywhere we wanted
...I stayed in Kota Kinabalu (also known as KK) in October 2006 for nearly 3 weeks. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah.
Getting to Kota Kinabalu (KK)
You can fly to KK from London Heathrow as we did. We travelled from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpar, and then to Kota Kinabalu as its not possible to do a direct flight. The flight in total was around 15 hours - 12 hours to Kuala Lumpar and 2 and a half hours to Kota Kinabalu.
Accommodation
We stayed in a five star resort while we were in KK which was outstanding and very reasonably price.
There is a large variety of places to choose to stay in KK, these range from 5 star resorts, down to small beach huts and hostels which are great for backpackers as it keeps the cost of accommodation down. The hostels are especially good for backpacker as you get to meet like-minded people...

Arithmetic Is Bad For Your Wealth
Advantages: A's
Disadvantages: C's
...the unexpectedly modern Kota Kinabalu Airport, loaded our luggage enthusiastically single handedly into his little green minibus and driven us for 10 minutes to our lodgings at the stunning Shangri La hotel, before insisting on unloading all our bags himself into the hands of the concierge service.
Ordinarily I wouldn?t mind this behaviour because it saves me doing it, and he?s only doing it to supplement his income with tips. The trouble this time, as I desperately rummaged through the pockets in my shorts, I knew I only had a $10 HKD note on me.
I offered it thinking he?d laugh at the funny foreigner with the wrong money, but he accepted it like I?d paid for his future grandchildren?s education.
It did make me do more pressure sums as I tried to calculate what I?d just gifted to the helpful man, and this time you can try too.
At the time...

KK, The Bright and Bustling Capital of Sabah
Advantages: Modern,Good Food,Good Hotels,Lots to See and Do
Disadvantages: High cost of air fares from Peninsular Malaysia
...The times are turning out to be very special for Kota Kinabalu ,the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sabah.. In addition to celebrating "Visit Sabah Year 2000" the capital, of "The Land Below the Wind" ,attained city status on February 2, 2000 and commemorated its centenary last year.
Sabah hosted the Eco-Challenge 2000 from Aug 21 to Sept 2 and the
Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon was held on Oct 7 and Oct 8.
To cap it all the Kinabalu National Park - a national tourism icon - has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
The bright, bustling, Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton (after
Sir Charles Jessel, of the British North Borneo Company), is actually Malaysia's youngest city. It's a clean, green and friendly town built right close to the edge of the sea and renowned for its colorful...

Hyatt KK !
Advantages: Not far from town
Disadvantages: If you are looking for a beach resort-hotel, this is not the place
...Kota Kinabalu (KK) is the capital of Sabah state. Sabah is the on the north of Borneo and Borneo is the third largest island in the world. Kota Kinabalu is famous for its Mount Kinabalu which is the highest mountain in South East Asia. Most foreigners come to KK to either climb Mount Kinabalu or to the beautiful islands famous for its scuba-diving and coral reefs.(KK used to be called Jesselton Town)
Hyatt Kota Kinabalu is located next to a shopping mall, Wisma Merdeka. Location wise, it is a good hotel because a major shopping mall is right next to it and within walking distance, you could reach the sunday morning market which is a popular tourist spot. The hotel is about 15-20 minutes away from the KK International Airport. (Note: This is not the airport where AirAsia, Asia's budget airline, lands) From the airport, you could...

Wish I was still there!
Advantages: relaxing, friendly staff, great pool
Disadvantages: expensive food
...the more up market resturant. The food is brilliant, though it is rather expensive and there is not much option for going elsewhere. For the old romantic souls among you, you can hie a gazebo on the beach for the evening. Here you have your own butler, who gives you a very personal service. Included are coctails, a brilliant but limited menu and a souvenier menu and photo.
If you do decide to leave the hotel, there is a shuttle bus to Kota Kinabalu, which is charged locally. This journey is about 45 mins long
There is also a spa and golf course at the hotel but we didnt use either of these....
