Sharp, silver and very sexy...

As promised, I?m going to review my latest electronic purchases as I described buying in my last Electrical Discount UK op, and I?ll start with my TV, which is a Sony KV-21LS30. When I was looking for a new TV I had to decide approximately what size I wanted and what features I needed. I decided 21 inches was as large as I could handle (oo-er! Sorry my ?Carry On? movie watching side comes out here) and that really made my decision on whether I wanted the latest widescreen format for me- 24 inches is about as small as these new sets go. TRADITIONAL WITH A TWIST

Advantages: CLASSY LOOKS, GREAT PICTURE, GOOD SOUND
Disadvantages: QUITE BULKY

...When I came to replace my aging portable set, I knew that the TV I bought would have to fulfill a few essential criteria. Firstly, it had to be from a reputable manufacturer. Now, I know that this doesn't necessarily guarantee quality, but after a couple of disappointing sets from Goodmans and Thorn, I'd had my fill of cheap televisions which promised so much but delivered so little. Secondly, it had to offer a degree of connectability. I own both a PS2 and an X-BOX, so scart connections were a must. Thirdly, it had to have a decent sound output - NICAM stereo was a minimum requirement. A flat screen would be the icing on the cake... Enter the Sony KV 21LS30 - a set which fulfilled all of my requirements. Its pure flat screen immediately caught my eye. The standard, curved tube televisions looked even more bulbous alongside...

Whats on TV

...I purchased the Sony KV-21LS30 which is a 21 inch flat screen television. You are asking why ? My last television was a Sony model and it lasted for ten years before it final conked out so I thought I stick to the same brand. I decided to NOT go for the wide screen range because of the price factor and I thought personally it made the people on screen look wider. I preferred to stick to the traditional model format, plus where my old telly went it did not have room to fit a wide screen. The 21-inch screen (H:471mm W:525mm D:487mm) is large enough and reasonably priced. In the high street stores they were costing GBP329.99 but I went to Empiredirect.co.uk and got it delivered within 2 days for GBP259.97 including VAT. You can get a cheaper make 21-inch television but the Sony design and especially the picture and sound quality...

The remote control is very useful, in fact you don?t' even need to touch the TV. From the remote you can change channel and volume etc, access Teletext, the menu and set the sleep timer and alarm. It uses two AAA batteries and these last for about 6-8 months. 10. Did I say top ten? I meant top nine reasons. The instructions that came with it are simple and clear; set up (as mentioned above) was easy and just required the pressing of a button. The features are easy to use (so that would be the changing of channels!) and it is made by a world famous company- Sony. The screen size however is only 21 inch, so it will look a bit small and out of place...

Give the finger to Dixons and Comet

Anyway, I had a look in the regular stores so I could have a look and things in the plastic, as it were, and chose which models I wanted- reviews of those will follow, but I decided a Sony KV-21LS30 television with a matching Sony SLV-SE720 VCR would do the trick. There really is very little competition on the high street when it comes to this type of product. Basically you have the ever-present Dixons and Currys, which are part of the same group and so have the same pricing, and Comet, who occasionally compete on price- but ultimately the two groups seem very happy with their cosy duopoly and their prices remain remarkably similar on most items. Having checked both groups, they had near-identical prices save a handful of change...
