...-permanent line of L'Oreal casting crème as I only ever dye my hair semi-permanently as I am too scared of something going wrong and me hating my hair forever. As my hair is so long (it would take probably 5 years to grow the colour out! Eeek!) since Ciao doesn't have a separate product for semi and permanent this is why my review is in this category. Please don't mistake it for permanent, in fact, I'm not even sure you can get excellence crème in permanent; you'll have to do some snooping! I bought this product at boots and it's normally £6.98, which I think is a little pricey for a semi-permanent hair colour but it was a pound of so I got it for £5.98. Casting Creme Gloss

Advantages: Easy to use, covers grey and dodgy highlights, lasting effect

...At nearly six pounds, this isn't the cheapest hair dye out there but it's incredibly easy to use and virtually mess-free. Also, it works. After a disasterous highlighting adventure, i used Casting Creme Gloss in Mahogany to cover up the damage. I have used this product (same colour) in the past, and it covers greys perfectly. I was impressed with the way it also covered up my unwanted highlights. They still show through a little bit, but more as tasteful lowlights as opposed to the brassy orange streaks i had before. Casting Creme Gloss is easy to use. You basically mix two bottles together and shake. The manufacturers have even made a handy slit in the box so that you can wedge your bottle of mixture in it and it will stand upright. Now, that's really thoughtful! Simple and effective hair dye - Definitely reccommended

Advantages: Easy to apply, clear instructions, sleek/shiny/accurate hair colour, cost-effective

This one had most good revies, was a low price, and had the colour I wanted, so the next day I went to my local Lloyd's Pharmancy where I found it to be on offer for £5 a carton. After spending a good five minutes deciding between 'Iced Chocolate' and 'Dark Brown', I went with my first instinct and bought Iced Chocolate. The packaging instructs you more than once to perform a skin test 48 hours in advance. Not having EVER dyed my hair before, I did the skin test on the skin on my elbow. I use a lot of L'Oreal hair care and make up products, and I would have to admit that it is one of my preferred brands. The pictures on the packaging were very believable, unlike other boxes which, to be honest, looked very cheap and didn't do much justice to their product. The L'Oreal packaging was shiny and glossy, and made of a thick, quality card. As I previously mentioned, what appealed was the photograph of the hair colour displayed - to me it appeared natural, and not as though it had been simply painted there with a computer. A product I'll be buying again and again!

Advantages: Cheap, covers greys, beautiful natural colour with slow fade
Disadvantages: Conditioner is too heavily perfumed

...I decided a few days ago that I wanted to change my hair colour - nothing major, just a slight alteration in tone and contrast, to cover the few greys I have and to even out my hair as the bottom 1/3 of it is slightly lighter due to being in the sun. After reading what felt like thousands of reviews, I decided I'd start off with a semi-permanent colour. I picked L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss in 500 Medium Brown because I trust L'Oreal products and this particular line of products had gotten some very rave reviews for being gentle and effective. I chose Medium Brown because I didn't want the colour to come out too dark (as a lot of semis tend to do) and I also didn't want it to be too red. ----Price and Packaging---- I bought this at Big W on special for $11.99 (it's usually $12.99). I'm not one to be particuarly picky with the price...

"Full steam ahead" or "Beware there be monsters?"

Advantages: Conditioner leaves hair very soft and shiny. Good for lighter/thinner coloured hair. Smells nice
