Ski La Plagne

Advantages: Loads
Disadvantages: ?

...My partner and I skied at La Plagne for a week in April 1999. After attempting to fly to Lyon we were diverted to Grenoble due to fog so spent several hours sunbathing on the tarmac while we waited for transport to arrive. The transfer should only have been 2 hours but ended up being something like 4 as a result. This nearly did for us as we had massive hangovers due to spending Bank Holiday Friday in various Horley pubs, before departing from Gatwick. Although we were skiing the La Plagne area we stayed in the satellite village of Les Coches to the west of the ski area at 1400m. Our accommodation was a Crystal catered chalet that had the advantage of being ski to door. It was in most respects excellent, having nice rooms and a couple of shared bathrooms with baths. The staff were very good cooks as well as being lively...

Novice Skiier:Belle of the Plagne (Belle Plagne)

Advantages: beautifully scenic well maintained resort, suitable for all skiing/snowboarding levels of experience
Disadvantages: Expensive, Not suitable for those with walking difficulties

...I went skiing for the first time to the resort of Belle Plagne, La Plagne in the French Alps for a week which started 22nd January 2005. The tour operator for the trip was Neilson and it cost £350 for 7 days self catering in the 'Les Constellations - Themis' apartments, including return flights from Manchester to Lyon, and transfers. As this review is of the resort, I will not babble on with my comments of the tour operator or the accommodation, I will comment on my thoughts of Belle Plagne as a novice skiier. The Belle Plagne Resort sits at 2000m within the La Plagne Resort in the French Alps. For the first three days of my trip, the snow constantly fell creating an awesome daily scenic view to my ski virgin eyes. However, with the wide areas of untouched powder snow, I am sure weathered skiiers appreciated the natural beauty...

Space Station La Plagne

Advantages: Learn here
Disadvantages: Peak times = peak crowds

...Its virtually above the tree line, its quite ugly, but its about the best place in Europe to learn to ski. A great ski school with the most steriotypical Ecole du Ski ESF guys you will ever meet. It could be a wind chill of -50 and they will still be there with just a pair of ray-bans and a ski band. How do they smoke a fag and ski at the same time? Can get very crowded, esp. at the main lift stations. Belle Plagne quite nice, but no night life. For the best bars go to Plagne Centre. If you want to know what altitude sickness feels like, then go up to the glacier and take the chair lift to the left. Great view of the whole planet from up there - one of the best around. So overal, a great place to catch the skiing / boarding bug. Don't go at peak times and make sure that if you go to Belle Plagne, that you buy a little sled and slide...

wii ski

Advantages: great family fun
Disadvantages: n/a

...Wii is one of the greatest games consoles that I have ever purchased and I absolutely love all of the games that I have played on it to date. Wii Family Ski is a game that up to five people can play and requires the Wii Fit to be able to play. It took me a while to find the Wii Fit or as it is also known the balance board but I kept on searching and got there in the end. Wii Family Ski lets you create a character from scratch or you can import your Mii character too whilst selecting different ski gear for your character. You need to use the Nunchuck and Remote in your hands to use as ski poles and step on the Wii Board to really take advantage of this great game. The Wii Board takes over to allow the player to turn whilst skiing by measuring the swaying and leaning of the body. In Family Ski, there are 14 different slopes to...

Courmayeur

Advantages: Great food and drink
Disadvantages: poor access to skiing

...My partner and I were in Courmayeur a few years ago for a weeks skiing in March. Having flown to Turin we went up the Val d’Aosta on a bus, quite a pretty 3-hour drive with numerous tunnels. Considering recent events on the alternative route (Mont Blanc tunnel) this is the one to opt for. We stayed in the Hotel Berthod, a nice 2 star b & b, courtesy of Thomson’s Holidays. It's a family run place that's been owned by the same people for over a hundred years, and has a nice cosy atmosphere. The rooms are traditional with private balconies and huge baths - always a big bonus when you're skiing, and there’s also a spa bath available in the basement. Thomson’s proved to be a good choice. The reps were the keenest and most fun of any of the companies we’ve skied with so far and the nights out they organised...

Le Cervin Plange Soleil France Odlays Residence

Advantages: Ski to/from door, close to centre, smal village quiet, parking
Disadvantages: Tatty, tired, basic no frills.

...This review is on Le Cervin Apartments in Plagne Soleil at 2050M in the resort of La Plagne French Alpes. I am also going to review the whole area of La Plagne in a different review as I think it will be to long to put both together. In the other review I will price items and talk about areas other than Plagne Soleil. Well where to start, oh yes. I must say it was not our accommodation of choice so forgive me for the negatives but we were supposed to have a fully catered for chalet in Plagne Centre. Le Cervin as I have already mentioned is in the resort of La Plagne in France which is made up of 7 varying sized areas. The Cervin is partly private and partly public available block, when I say this I mean that some are run by Odlays and others are privately owned all in the same block. There are about 100 rooms in the block. The north...

Skiing in La Thuile (Italy)

Advantages: Snow-sure, friendly locals, good value food
Disadvantages: Complex rather soulless

...I recently got back from a week skiing in a little-known (but up-and-coming) resort in the Aosta valley. Two hours away from Turin airport (motorway most of the way), straddling the border with France, the former mining town of La Thuile boasts an enviable snow record - this last season began in early December, with the lifts closing on April 25th despite 300+ cm of good snow on the upper slopes). Convenience is the watchword here, and what the modern resort lacks in Alpine charm, it makes up for in ease. The huge Planibel hotel/apartment complex is located at the foot of the gondola and quad chairlift up to the snowbowls; equipment storage is easy, and an escalator brings you from the depot to the lifts (so there's less of the clumping around in skiboots that you find in resorts such as Chamonix). The lifts themselves have state...

Ski Break at the Llac Negre,Pas de la Casa

Advantages: Small bubbly friendly hotel with lots going on
Disadvantages: Short uphill walk from slopes, initial cost quite expensive

...used the other room as a dressing room/ drying room. There were bedside cabinets, a tv table with a couple of small drawers and a double wardrobe ( although we practically lived out of our suitcases as we always take way way too many clothes and couldnt fit them all in the wardrobes!!!) There are lockers for Skis and boots which are located up a short flight of stairs en route to the rooms. As there is no lift I wouldnt recommend for tiny children (ours were 4 and 6 at the time) We stayed half board ( but they were more than happy to make a packed lunch). There wasnt much choice for meals for example breakfast could be sausages and tomatoes one day and bacon with mushrooms the next day (but there was unlimited toast , cereals and fruit) but what was on the menu was tasty and well cooked. There was a gala dinner on New Years Eve which...

La Chope

Advantages: Great food, reasonable fixed price menu
Disadvantages: None

...On our recent trip to the Loire Valley Mr Tart and myself arrived in Tours quite late on our first night. We drove down to Tours from Paris. We were going to stop for something to eat on the way but in the end decided to make our way straight to Tours and get settled in the hotel and then find something close by. A couple of minutes from our hotel we came across this place and were really glad that we did. LOCATION: La Chope is located at 25 Avenue Grammont. Our hotel was on the same road so we just came across it. It is about a ten minute walk from Tours? old town. The restaurant doesn?t stand out and the sign is not particularly bright so make sure you look out for it. THE EXPERIENCE: La Chope (which apparently translates as the tankard) is actually a fish restaurant. I?m not really a fish person (ok, that...

Review of La Chope, Tours

The scary slopes of the Sheffield Ski Village!

Advantages: Good fun
Disadvantages: Quite expensive

...When it comes to sport I have always tried to avoid extreme sports, favouring instead things like athletics and running. I represented my county (Yorkshire) at both cross country running and athletics when I was still at school and since then I have completed one full marathon and three half marathons but as far as sport is concerned that is about it for me. I have always consciously avoided skiing, although I realise that this is quite tame in comparison with a lot of what is available these days. Over the years I have declined several chances to accompany friends to winter ski resorts for fear of being a likely candidate to suffer a broken leg or worse, but I have a group of friends that are regular visitors to the European ski resorts and these same friends also frequently visit the Sheffield Ski Village, which is only a few miles...
