Doing a course which required a lot of camera work, I needed somewhere to store all the raw footage, which anyone who's ever worked with footage from a high quality video camera knows, takes up a hell of a lot of space. So I needed somewhere to keep it locked away safely to take around from uni computer to uni computer. My weapon of choice for an external hard drive was the Lacie Desktop Hard Disk 320 GB. LaCie 1 TB Big Disk Hard Drive

Advantages: Capacity, looks, decent manual, cheap
Disadvantages: A bit slow, a lot to lose in one go

...With people starting to amass more and more data on their PCs, the old methods of backup such as tape or CD & DVD are becoming woefully inadequate. As a result, by far the most cost efficient method for either storing data or backing it up is the external hard drive. That said, 1TB or 1 Terrabyte is a crazy amount of space and the sort of storage that would have kept a multinational company ticking over nicely ten years ago. The LaCie (pronounced Lassie, like the dog) 1TB unit is a reasonably basic device that only has a USB2 (although USB1 is supported) interface and comes with a suitable lead, external power supply and software CD. It can work with both PCs and Macs although by default it's formatted for PC use so Mac users will need to reformat it first but that's no hardship really. Great capacity hard disk for the price, stylish and simple too.

Advantages: Great Value, very reliable
Disadvantages: Short cables, and shows up fingerprints

...be a good idea to have a cleaning cloth with this device, as the shiny black surface has an awful habit of showing off your fingerprints, there isn't a cloth included unfortunately. So, what is included? well, the LaCie supports lots of different transfer methods, I used the firewire, but it also comes with cables for USB and a few others, I think this choice is great. Unfortunately the cables are very short, which would be fine if you want the hard disk to sit right next to your desktop PC. But I'm using a laptop, and the nearest desk, which was only a short distance away, was too far for the cable to reach. I had to resort to picking up a slightly longer cable for about £2 from play.com Not the best of starts, but, the device itself more than makes up for it. Very slow and it failed

...My drive failed only half way through its two year guarantee period. Lacie do not offer any data recovery only repair. I then found out that they will not honor their guarantee even after a specialist data recovery firm using all the required clean rooms recover the data. This means that all my data is either gone or I have to pay nearly £1000 for the data recovery and then pay again for the drive to be repaired. With these drives they house 2x 500gb drives and this means twice the price for data recovery. On speaking to the data recovery experts they have seen a huge increase in Lacie drives being sent in due to failure and have advised that these do not handle the data well they should do. Gigabytes getting cheaper and cheaper

Advantages: Very good value, good transfer rate
Disadvantages: Fan noise may be annoying for some

...I recently bought one of these hardrives for around £60. So far, this hard drive has not given any problems what so ever. The physical size of the hard drive is not very big, so chances are you can find a place close to your PC tower to put it. The hard drive also dosnt weigh much so it is also fine to carry it around if you wish to connect it to a laptop. It's got a very smart look and feels quite sturdy, unlike some other hardrives that feel like cheap plastic. Data transfer rates is very good indeed. It is not the fastest since it uses a USB 2.0 connection to transfer files. Anything faster would be something with a firewire connection. Value for money is also very good, 500 GB of memory for £60 and free delivery to your doorstep is indeed quite the bargain at this point in time. We all know things get cheaper as technology...
