Lacie Desktop Hard Disk 320 GB
Advantages: Does what it says on the tin.
Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
...During my final year of uni, this little gem turned out to be a Godsend. Doing a course which required a lot of camera work, I needed somewhere to store all the raw footage, which anyone who's ever worked with footage from a high quality video camera knows, takes up a hell of a lot of space.
So I needed somewhere to keep it locked away safely to take around from uni computer to uni computer. My weapon of choice for an external hard drive was the Lacie Desktop Hard Disk 320 GB.
Having brought it online for just under £50, that instantly stuck me as a bargain. Purchased approximately 18 months ago, that was a steal. Naturally, with the passing of time and the increasing availability of external hard drives, the price of this items has began to fall, as is the case with all types of technology.
Once plugged in and inserted into a USB...

LaCie 1 TB Big Disk Hard Drive
Advantages: Capacity, looks, decent manual, cheap
Disadvantages: A bit slow, a lot to lose in one go
...With people starting to amass more and more data on their PCs, the old methods of backup such as tape or CD & DVD are becoming woefully inadequate. As a result, by far the most cost efficient method for either storing data or backing it up is the external hard drive.
That said, 1TB or 1 Terrabyte is a crazy amount of space and the sort of storage that would have kept a multinational company ticking over nicely ten years ago.
The LaCie (pronounced Lassie, like the dog) 1TB unit is a reasonably basic device that only has a USB2 (although USB1 is supported) interface and comes with a suitable lead, external power supply and software CD. It can work with both PCs and Macs although by default it's formatted for PC use so Mac users will need to reformat it first but that's no hardship really.
On first opening the box, it looks really...

Great capacity hard disk for the price, stylish and simple too.
Advantages: Great Value, very reliable
Disadvantages: Short cables, and shows up fingerprints
..., and about the height of two and a half. Nice and compact.
On my mac, it instantly was recognised as a storage device with no trouble and I assigned it to be a backup drive, it's been perfectly reliable ever since.
It's not particularly noisy, you can hear it, but it's hardly noticeable unless you think about it, it doesn't have in internal fan, which allows for a much quieter drive.
Often it is argued that you should only use external hard disks to back up data, and not as extra storage space when you are running out. With the 1TB LaCie you can have both.
I partitioned my device, setting aside 250GB for personal files,HD movies, photos etc. and the rest for backup. I used free software downloaded from the net for this on my mac, but I think there is a utility for doing this without any extra software on windows, not sure though...

External Hard-drive fit for rugged adventures
Advantages: Fast transfer speed, protection from knocks and drops
Disadvantages: Fairly high price
...they have less than what they state. For e.g. a 320 GB hard-drive will have about 290 GB, which is quite a chunk away from the stated amount. So, looking at the LaCie external hard-drive you will be looking at a memory capacity of 230-240 GB, which in this case is not a large chunk, but is still considerable.
There is no known reason why all hard-drives (including the LaCie) have less memory than stated, it may be due to the internal disk within the outer case not being able to hold the stated amount or it may be that company's want to make a profit out of its customers. No on really knows. If you don't believe me about the memory capacity of a hard drive being less than stated, you can yourself check your hard-drives capacity by going into 'My Computer' and then right clicking the computer hard-drive icon and going into its properties...

Although most people wont need a hardrive this size to do the basics of any office applications or internet use. This hard drive is for the people who run network drives and do alot of video editing and the like.

The Big Hard Disk With The Big Heart
Advantages: Fast, Reliable, Huge Data Capacity
Disadvantages: Expensive
...What Is It
The LaCie Big Disk Extreme + 1 TB is a Hard Disk suitable for Macs and Windows. It is for backing up any type of data from your computer like Photos, Movies, Music, Documents anything.
Why Buy It
I decided to buy this after reading another review from a magazine called iCreate which specialises in products suitable for Apple Macs. I bought before a hard disk by another brand but found it was only avalible for Windows so had to send it back. This is suitable for Windows XP/Vista/2000 And Mac OSX 10.8 or later which is very handy.
What Does 1 TB Extreme Mean?
I TB means 1 terabyte. This basically is ALOT of memory. 1 TB is 1024 GB which is the equivelent of-
*270,000 songs (roughly)
*472 Hours of film (Non stop!)
*3.2 Million pictures (again roughly)
*1,000 copies of Encyclopedia Britannica
I...

Do not buy a LaCie disk ever!
Advantages: idea
Disadvantages: performance
...I completely agree with the previous review, and there's nothing much to say for this item. It sucks!! I wasted my company money and their confidence on me with this little piece of crap.
So, how did I end buying this?
On a Tom's Hardware review I saw this item, which has the ability of being an ethernet disk and an USB disk at the same time, which at the moment, was an innovation.
With such a configuration the disk can be accesible to ethernet users even at [theoric] gigabit speeds and at the same time being accessed by a local user through USB connection. This was the perfect solution for us, since my mates needed an ethernet disk always available and I needed a hi-speed access to it due to the huge amount of files I manage, both in number and size.
I downloaded the specs and even talked to Lacie before purchasing, so I was...

750GB is so MUCH!
Advantages: So much space with very fast connectivity
Disadvantages: none
...be surprisingly fast. Access time was very quick, 12ms per second seek time, so within the hour i had backed up and transferred my files!. I have had no trouble streaming games and movies from my hard disk, with access to files within the disk is as instant as a normal hard disk drive.
It can be stored on it's side, or standing up right. They can also be stacked, if 750gb isn't enough for you! There is a circular light around the on/off button to indicate that the device is on, and also that disk access is being made. During powerdown of your computer, the hard disk will automatically turn off, so there is no need to turn it off yourself.
The unique Capacity Gauge LED is extremely useful as it tells me how much space is left without me having to check o my pc.
They can be easily knocked over, so if you're untidy like me, then clean up...

Black Box
Advantages: Inexpensive with a large capacity
Disadvantages: a bit noisy
...I have several Lacie external hard-disks attached to my Apple Mac computers and have mostly found them to be reliable, quiet and fast, until a few weeks ago when one of them (a 500GB Porsche designed one which I purchased about 18 months ago) failed. I needed a replacement and after quite a lot of research decided to risk buying a Lacie again.
Build Quality
This is an inexpensive 1TB (approximately 1000 GB) disc in a stylish compact case: 4.6 x 7.6 x 1.8 inches, which is actually slightly larger than the previous Porsche designed models, so it doesn't stack neatly with them. The power-supply is separate and the case has no cooling fan. The design is very simple and neat with a fairly robust looking case and a shiny black finish. The power switch and connections are at the rear and a strip light runs along the bottom of the case...
