Lacking that Porsche Feel!

Advantages: Fast, Nice Design and Good Value.
Disadvantages: Dodgy Power Supply and A Bit Too Loud.

...I purchased my LaCie 200GB USB2 Hard Drive a little over 4 months ago and have given it some hefty use since I got it. I paid £109.99 for the drive which has now dropped considerably especially on some of the stores you can find here through Ciao. The drive came in a good sized box not much bigger than your average software box for say a copy of Windows XP, and was well packed inside in a plastic wrapper and some foam holding pieces. The drive was in perfect condition and looked as it should. Also in the box came the two part power supply (adapter and plug also comes with a two pin plug for outside UK) a short but sturdy USB2 Cable, the "Getting Started" Guide and Utility Disk. Everything you need to get you going. Setup was super easy so that any novice computer user can get to grips with this drive. The "Getting Started...

Porsche Performance?

Advantages: Good Looking, Robust
Disadvantages: Scratch Easily, Heavy

...of the feet fell off at the back. One went bouncing off under a desk never to be seen again and the other is now super-glued to the bottom in the middle. I shudder to think of poor Porsche drivers speeding along the motorway suddenly finding their back wheels have sprung off... and I doubt super-glue would be of use! The drive has maintained a minimalist look. A tiny orange LED appears when the drive is on, and flickers to show activity. Aside from that there is no indication of the drive's status. At various points around the housing, the "Lacie" logo and "Design by F.A. Porsche" are engraved into the aluminium giving the unit a sort of personalised/prestigious feel. Let's not get carried away here though, it's still a hard disk no matter who designed it and does the same job as your regular unit! Moving away from appearances, as we all know...

Review of LaCie Mobile Hard Drive Design by F.A. Porsche FireWire and USB 2.0 80 GB

Big and beautiful

Advantages: Large capacity, low noise, small & looks great
Disadvantages: No standby mode.

...LaCie 250GB USB Hard Drive My PC is about three years old and has a 160GB hard drive installed. I had always been amazed at how quickly the size of standard hard drives had grown and thought the days of juggling software and stored data were long gone. I'd never come close to filling a hard drive since they started getting bigger than 30GB and could back up all my important files to a few CDs. That was before I got into video editing, digital photography and MP3s. As I started downloading several years worth video footage I was shocked to see how much space they took up. The early editing software I used had a counter showing how big the file you are currently downloading is and the available space remaining on your hard drive. This counter is in GB and to see it moving was frightening. I quickly realised I needed some external...

Lacie's hot HDD

Advantages: great design, high capacity, fast
Disadvantages: mains powered

...Just look at it!!! it is stunning. From the moment I took it out of the box and peeled off its protective packing i knew I had bought a winner. At a only slightly superior price to simlar spec drives on a search using kelkoo I saw this and with the recomendation from a friend I bought it. The look - Well it is very nice to look at with its sexy alloy body (designed by F.A. Porsche, how cool is that!!!!) is both sophisticated and practical. Thoes little groves on to p allow you to safly stack multiple drives on top of each other safly and neatly and the matal also helps disapate the heat. That means no fan to break or make noise (yey!). I will give you one word of warning - If you intend on traveling with this baby it will scratch it wont look too bad but IT WILL SCRATCH! The spec - Whel here it is... Dimensions (WxDxH) 11.2 cm x...

Great capacity hard disk for the price, stylish and simple too.

Advantages: Great Value, very reliable
Disadvantages: Short cables, and shows up fingerprints

...I purchased the LaCie 1TB as my first external hard drive, about 6 months ago. I wasn't sure how much space I would be needing, but as the LaCie was on offer for £75 for 1TB I couldn't really resist. The promotional literature for this Hard disk seems to keep reminding us that it was designed by Neil Poulton, someone who I'm not aware of, but must be pretty good judging by the design of this product. It is rare when talking about an external hard drive that style is a talking point, but in this case it is. It's a sleek black elegant looking case, very very shiny. At the front there is a small strip of blue light that activates whenever the hard drive is turned on, everything else it on the panel at the back (on switch, connectors and vent) making the device very uncluttered and minimalist. What I will say though, is it would probably...

Review of LaCie Hard Disk Design by Neil Poulton Hard drive 1 TB

Now this is one Hard Cookie.

Advantages: Very Lightweight
Disadvantages: Performance = Average

...Hello again peeps, i came across this hard drive whilst at my local computer fair on the pier today. I had to buy it, just based on the reason that it was ideal for backing my information up. Better than the floppy disks i brought from the computer accessories supplier i have been with for about a couple of months now. It saves money especially when i have brought loads of floppy disks. The Lacie pocketdrive has proved popual with many users i spoke to today. The pocketdrives are pretty expensive but in the long run cheaper. The Lacie Mobile Hard Drive measures 76x129x17Millimeters in size, It only weighs just an amazing 200grams which is VERY LIGHT. You have 2 different interfaces which are FIREWIRE and USB2. It is BUS powered which i think is easier for the no cables look. The only problems with this Mobile Hard Drive is that it has...

A very reliable storage device

Advantages: reliable, quick to use
Disadvantages: A bit large for day to day use

...I have had this hard-drive for a far while now and i must say that i have been very happy with it. It isn't anything special and there aren't really any advantages over other portable hard-drives. However it's main asset is it's reliabilty. This relaiblity is what makes me reccommend this hard-drive to potential buyers. For me it is better to have a storage device that will work everytime you connect it to the computer rather than something flashy which looks stylish - not to say that the lacie is hideous. In terms of performance the lacie ticks all the boxes again. It is quickly found by the computer as soo as its connected and then its very easy to find in the 'My Computer' folder. Conncetion is done by either/both wires which are both USB compatible, on older computers i found i had to connect both wires but on my relatively...

Sweet as it is sleek?

Advantages: Fast connection speed. Small and relatively lightweight. stylish.
Disadvantages: too many cables and short connection cable.

...the computer) is really short. This means the hard drive has to be literally on top of the computer or right next to it which is irritating if you have limited workspace. Also, as you'll see in the photo, due to its thin width, ideally it does need to be sat on its feet for stability. Fast data transfer rates, up to 480Mbits/s are possible, and this means transfer of huge files such as films, music, photos and other media is simplified and sped up enormously. Design is obviously a pretty keypoint to mention, since it was designed by the world-famous Porsche Design Agency GmbH, and is, as such, pretty damn stylish! A glossy mirror front and silver elsewhere, with indents to stack them ontop of each other if you have more than one. Basically plug and play, so very simplistic installation and future use, and it is also very durable (i...

Lacie Dual DVD Writer USB 2.0 (Mac and PC)

Advantages: Reliable, well built, works easily.
Disadvantages: Not a speed demon

...desktop. This is of course because it was apparently designed by Porsche! Nice! :D (If only it had the speed of a Porsche :D) The drive plugged in via usb into my mac and worked straight away, no drivers no fuss. On a windows pc you'll have to install a driver but it doesnt look hard or technical. From the back of the dvd drive runs the external power source that plugs into your regular mains socket. I was suprised at this, I suppose i thought it would just run of the power of my mac but in hindsight that was probably a little silly of me as it does take a fair bit of power to write a dvd. So bear in mind you'll need a spare socket to run this thing, and speace for a couple more cables! :) Its is a bit noisey when writing a dvd, its not like a jet going through your living room but u may have to turn ur music up a touch to drown it out...

Review of LaCie DVD±RW with LightScribe Design by F.A. Porsche

Perfect, tidy looking mass storage device

Advantages: Compact, easy to set up, and nice design
Disadvantages: Slightly loud and supplied with pathetically short USB cable

...Was in desperate need of another drive for MP3 and movie backup purposes as one of my internal drives was about to fail, as it happens i copied the data across just in time and through the USB 2 interface was surprisingly quick. My one worry was using USB instead of Firewire but it hasn't proved to be a problem. The drive shows in device manager as being a Seagate ST3250820A and i have always trusted Seagate drives. My 3 internal drives consist of 2 Seagate 200gb drives and a Western Digital 80gb which is the one that has just failed. Other technical specs of the drive are a data transfer rate of 480 mbits/s, 11ms seek time, 7200rpm, 8mb cache and drive registers in Windows XP as 232Gb due to normal data size calculations where 1MB = 1024Kb Bought the drive on 6th March 2007 for £59.99, there are a lot of higher prices out...
