Lagaan is a must-see movie for anyone with an interest in Indian cinema or cinema beyond Hollywood. Although very much within the mainstream Hindi cinema of Bombay/Mumbai in terms of its stars, use of song and dance and its length, Lagaan took a gamble with the domestic Indian audience. It breaks all contemporary conventions of Hindi film by being set in an Indian village during the British Raj, far away from the more usual modern metropolitan cities and exotic foreign locations. It also seemed destined to fail internationally, given that it features a cricket match lasting longer than the average Hollywood film and avoids the melodramatic kitsch, camp style that is celebrated in the West as "Bollywood". Yet Lagaan was not only a huge hit domestically but was also only the third Indian film to ever be nominated for an Oscar in the foreign-language category, thanks to its outstanding performances, music and narrative. On the DVD: Lagaan on DVD is presented with good picture and sound, but otherwise has little more to offer, despite being a two-disc package. The features are less than exciting, comprising 17 minutes of deleted footage with no explanation, the theatrical trailers for two other films rather than for this film and a list of films in which several key participants have worked with no clips. Most DVDs of Indian films have an extra menu for song selections but here one has to move through the scene menu. There are subtitles in several languages. --Rachel Dwyer ... less

Lagaan a story about tax
Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp
...Well this will probably be my first bollywood review, but to be honest I couldn't have picked a better film. Ive never been a really big fan of Indian movies, even though my mum and dad both always watch it, however this is the only Indian film I can say ive not got bored watching and furthermore seen in the Cinema. The film im reviewing is the academy award nominated "Lagaan" which translated means Land Tax, however the film for international audiences was called Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. The film was directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar and starred Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh. Now because this is my first hollowyood film I though along with this review I would give a breif introduction on who the main cast member is, as he is actually a big star in India, and one I have heard of before. Hopefully this review will encourage people to...

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India Film Review
Advantages: characters, story, music
Disadvantages: love sub-plot
...The word "lagaan" translates to "tax" in English, and here relates to actor-come-producer Aamir Khan's fictional take on the British Empire's oppressive rule of the Indian people.Set in 1893, in a small village, Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne) is looking to double the tax income and increase the pressure upon the number of Indian farmers, who're already struggling with a severe drought. Being the arrogant man that is, however, he presents the villagers with a challenge: Beat the Brits at cricket and their taxes for three years will be cancelled. Lagaan is essentially a sports movie mixed with politics, making it a really enjoyable viewing experience for it's nearly-four-hour running time. Depicting the Indian people's uprising via the means of cricket, director Ashutosh Gowariker appears to have a lot of fun...
