Give it a try
Advantages: The pubs, the friendly people
Disadvantages: The Troubles tend to put people off
...I suppose when people hear the name Belfast they automatically think of The Troubles. However those people have obviously never visited the city. Yes, it may have the worlds most bombed hotel - The Europa. But don't let that blinker you. Just across the road from The Europa there are two brilliant pubs. The Crown and Robinsons. If you visit they are an absolute must. Belfast has a great deal going for it - an excellent public transport service, wonderful buildings in the centre of town, a wealth of fantastic pubs and many interesting museums. The redevelopment of the Lagan area is a real testament to the direction in which the city is going. Belfast is easily accessible by boat and plane and once your there you won't want to leave....

WHAT'S WITH THE SHEEP
Advantages: Great venue, great disabled facilites, supberb views
Disadvantages: Carparking is not free
...Belfast Waterfront Hall can be found at 2 Layon Place, Belfast, BT1 3WH. The contact telephone number is 028 90 334400. It is owns and run by Belfast City Council so ratepayers basically have funded its building and upkeep. Not only is it a concert hall it also acts as a conference and exhibition centre too.
It has been open for around 6 years or so now – purpose built with modern facilities to suit the needs of both business and entertainment. Prior to this in Belfast there was a huge void. I have lived in the city for 8 years now and it was not until April this year (2001) that l visited the Waterfront Hall.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
It looks huge from the outside. Built on the banks of the river Lagan, it overlooks the weir. It is a massive glass fronted building with 4 floors. The views are spectacular to say...

~~Reaching its 10 years of entertainment~~
Advantages: Convenient, safe, clean, and accessible to any kind of transport
Disadvantages: Not much of events and programmes that I like most to watch
...THE WATERFRONT HALL is one of the architectural icons along Lagan River in Belfast, just besides Hilton Hotel and few meters away from the central train station and St Georges Market (3rd best food market in the UK). It is an entertainment and cultural venue for the past ten years, and it has been visited by prominent people from around the world, including Prince Charles who inaugurated the building in January 1997.
One of the magazines published by the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau describes the Waterfront Hall as one of the ''must-see city attractions''. This ''contemporary theatrical venue'' dominates the Lagan skyline with its distinctive bronze dome. This 2,000-seater venue has a ''superbly designed'' concert hall and it is also considered as an ''expression of Belfasts confidence'' as a modern European city and it...

The best of the true kings of Mod
Advantages: Full of soul, classic tunes and effortless cool
Disadvantages: One or two classics missing
...'s London roots as run screaming toward then jump on them; Stanley Unwin pops up on these with his inimitable semi-nonsense commentary for an extra surreal feel. You'll think "WTF?" when you hear them, but you 'll also laugh.
You'll be surprised by how many of these you've heard without ever knowing what the songs were actually called; there's the out-and-out rock of Wham Bam Thank You Mam, which sounds hugely familiar even if you haven't heard it before, the folksy tenderness of The Autumn Stone and the Mod anthem Rollin' Over among many others, all of them infused with the soul and nonchalant cool that seemed to come so easily to the Small Faces. In fact, there's only one omission glaring in its absence, the wondrous All Or Nothing, which surely should have been included here at the expense of the Ian MacLagan composition Up The Wooden...

O'Connor does Irish Folk with Style
Advantages: Beautiful renditions of traditional songs. Fantastic powerful singing.
Disadvantages: None.
...sung. The sad story of an Irishman emigrating to America only to find the horrors of war.
8. Moorlough shore
Yet another beautiful song. Stirring stuff.
9. Parting glass
A lovely beat to this one. Not such a well known song but very skillfully done.
10. Baidin fheilimi
A jolly little song sung in Irish.
11. My lagan love
This is my favourite on this album by far. This is a very well known song that has been done by many singers. A notable version was by Van Morrison on his album with the Chieftains. However, I have never heard it done anything like this. This is really powerful stuff and every time I listen to it I am moved to smile at the intensity of it's presentation. If you don't like this you have no soul!
12. Lord Baker
This is a very long (11 minutes) and very slow song. It is done as a duet with the great Christy...

In The Name Of God...
Advantages: Music, Lyrics, everything for me
Disadvantages: None
...and DJ Aqeel.
Lyrics are by the Writer & Director of this Movie Shoaib Mansoor.
Singers : Ahmad Jahanzeb, Khawar Jawad, Javed Bashir, Kamijee, Shuja Haider, and Lagan the Band.
There are 10 tracks in the soundtrack, including the remix version as well.
1) Khuda Ke Liye(title song):
For me this song is the best song in the soundtrack, and infact it is the Best Song. The music & lyrics of this song is just great. When i heard the song last year, i was just amazed by the lyrics. Frankly speaking i have not heard such good song, with so much depth in it for a long time. It is beautifully sung by the singer. The meaning of this song is dont do wrong things in the name of god, if you understand Urdu or Hindi then you would really love this song. It describes god by various name, one line in it says ' Khuda Toh Rahim Hai, Karim Bhi Hai...

Languish at Langans
Advantages: Very buzzy, fab for people watching, right next to Green Park Tube
Disadvantages: It isnt cheap
...Excuse the cheesy pun of a title but Langans really is a very lazy, loungey type of place.
Situated on right of Green Park tube station in London is Stratton Street and half way down on the left is Langans.
The reason I first heard of Langans was that my first ever boss used to love the place. He'd get me to book him a table there for lunch with various business associates, and always insisted on a downstairs table.
A few years later I had 4 friends come up to London for a few days and decided to give the old place a whirl for an evening meal.
Booking
Langans is very much a media haunt during the day, and possibly a few tourists too because of its location. But in the evenings it seems to be a very mixed crowd. Because I knew how popular the place was I booked up a couple of weeks in advance. I dont think Lagans is as busy...

The mother of all Irish Dance Shows
Advantages: just a great show!
Disadvantages: high ticket prices, less Irish Dancing than in other shows
...because of the huge demand. Riverdance - The Show does not only concentrate on Irish Dance, there is also Flamenco, Russian ballet and of course a lot of singing.
March 1996 Riverdance first came to the United States. After Michael Flatley left the show, Colin Dunne danced the lead role and he did not disappoint his audience. Just like in Europe, Riverdance was a huge success in the USA too. Sold out shows every night and record breaking ticket and merchandise sales. In July 1997 Riverdance opened its first German Tour in Oberhausen - now it´s the best know and probably most popular show in Germany.
At the moment there are three touring dance companies: The Liffey (Europe, Asia), The Lagan (America) and The Shannon (formerly "The Lee", Broadway New York City) - all named after Irish rivers. All three companies are still fascinating...

Welcome Home, Corrs.
Advantages: Wonderful source material; appealing arrangements with long shelf life; excellent sound; BBC Concert Orchestra.
Disadvantages: Sharon's violin, Corrs' vocal harmonies underused; bubblegum track, 'Old Town'.
...underscoring helps a lot. Listen, for instance, to those stirring martial drums on 'Brid Og Ni Mhaill' and 'My Lagan Love'. On the latter, the drums evoke the song's origins in Ulster, Northern Ireland, and 'The Troubles' attendant to that place. (A host of other artists have also covered this popular air, including Kate Bush, the Chieftains, Sinéad O'Connor, and Charlotte Church.)
Yet the Corrs can't seem to totally kick the bubblegum habit. 'Old Town', heard earlier on the Corrs' live MTV concert video, is a piece of pablum written by Philip Lynott of the Irish hard rock band, Thin Lizzy. Curiously, the trumpet sounds a lot like the brass on the Beatles' 'All You Need is Love'. For what it's worth, the track does cut the sweeping mellowness that pervades the album, and perks things up a bit.
Mitchell Froom has produced an excellent recording...

My Rough Guide to...Belfast
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...the taxi. It is advisable to use reputable companies only such as ValueCabs and FonaCab. New rules brought in by Belfast City Council also make it illegal for taxis to charge per head, a tactic taxi drivers used to employ on people coming out of bars and clubs. These new rules also state that every taxi in Belfast must have a green plate with its own individual number to show they are a registered taxi driver. If you have a bad experience or a taxi driver rips you off, I suggest you take note of the number then complain to the council who will be willing to help.
ACCOMODATION
Staying in Belfast can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. There is somewhere to suit every budget. If you want to stay in a luxurious hotel there are two main choices. The Hilton is located right beside the Waterfront Hall and overlooks the river Lagan...
