...Staropramen is a Czech lager, first brewed in Prague in 1869, but didn't get its brand name registration until 1911. Today, it is the Czech Republics top selling beer and is sold in many countries all over the world. I hear that is very popular in Ireland, sold almost as frequently as Guinness. It is now widely available in many UK pubs and clubs and is reasonably priced too. Right, enough with the introduction, now to the important part of any drink - the taste! At 5% ABV it is mid strength lager and it tastes great. Although its full bodied, Staropramen is smooth and surprisingly light, meaning it is very easy to drink. It also has tremendous thirst quenching potential, so is lovely on a hot day in the beer garden of you're local. Dishwater or British pride? (Carling Lager)

Advantages: Cheap.
Disadvantages: Weak watery taste.

...I like beer, as do many of us, but after a recent holiday in Belgium I have come back a bit of a beer snob. The beer in Belgium (mainstream beer too) is wonderful, full of rich flavours and has a decent kick to it which is different to many mainstream beers found in the UK. I know you can get good Real Ales in the UK but I thought I would look at a selection of the more popular beers you can get easily throughout the UK starting with Carling. The tin of carling I have chilling in my fridge contains 440ml of 4% vol beer and cost me £1.09. The tin is black and white and boasts that Carling is made with British barley and has been for over 30 years, the beer is made from 100% British barley and that the beer offers a complete flavour and refreshment for all. FANCY BOTTLE, FANCY LAGER

Advantages: Variety of sizes, good taste
Disadvantages: Quite strong, waste of glass??

...ml bottles as they are often on offer at Tesco for around £1 or less per bottle. Although this is a Dutch lager in origin the bottle states that it is "brewed in the UK for Grolsch(UK)Ltd" at Burton on Trent! This makes me a tad suspicious as this is where Carling is brewed as well! Alcohol content is 5.0% volume and the ingredients are merely stated as "water, malted barley and hops" - no doubt there are probably hidden additives in there too?! As with most, if not all, lagers/beers this is best served well chilled and has a very full strong flavour without being too gassy as with some cheaper lagers. For myself it is a little too strong to drink a lot of and I think it goes to the head quite quickly as it doesn't seem to take much to get my boyfriend quite tiddly too! Export strength lager at it's best

Advantages: Great tasting lager and its refreshing too
Disadvantages: A little pricey compared to weaker lagers

...with Heineken on any level (well Stella possibly has a stake in the violent after effects category I will concede that), it is of a different calibre a finer art of beer making. If it?s going to be a lager, it?s got to be a Heineken, maybe this is seen through the rose tinted eyes of a holiday romance, but I stick by it and I love it as a parent to a child. Don?t deny yourself the opportunity to try this, give it a go, if you don?t like it blame me, all I can do is offer my opinion, and it is horrendously one sided. Expect to pay over £1 a can and around £2.30+ for a pint, but with that comes a guarantee of quality (not a literal one that would be madness, think metaphorically), you know what your going to get with this lager, and you know it?s going to be good....
