Lagos in the Algarve!

Advantages: sunny!! friendly, relaxed, picturesque
Disadvantages: can be a bit too hot, not much shade, constantly people trying to sell daytrips

...across the bridge to the port then there is a pizza hut and a HUGE mcdonalds was getting built). Has internet cafes (cheap prices- approx 2 euros for 30 mins while we were there). Has GORGEOUS beaches!! You can go down to Lago's beach which can be rather crowded but still is an amazing experience! Or you can go and visit many of the Algarve's other beaches. We met a couple that went to a beach close-by and swam around the corner to their own secluded beach! If there was someone there, they would swim onto the next one for privacy! There are many alcoves and beaches so privacy is free! Waterparks close by! Good for family day trips out! ----FEEL LIKE A TRIP TO THE ZOO?---- If you feel like a day trip to the nearby zoo then a little word of advice.. only go if you have a mobile to phone for a taxi to get you home or if you have...

My Lovely Lagos

Advantages: A Great Atmospheric Town Bubbling with Life and Colour
Disadvantages: None

...I don't know why it has taken me so long to get round to writing about Lagos. I guess when you live in a beautiful place you tend to take your surroundings for granted. It's six years now since I left Portugal but there isn't a day when I don't miss the colour and ambience. On days like today when Warsaw is a sea of grey I really miss the colours blue, white and yellow - sky, white-washed houses and sand. The first stop for visitors arriving in the Algarve will be Faro airport. Faro is a fine town ans has a lot to offer for a day trip but the first thing most visitors will want to do is to get in a cab or a hired car and drive to their hotel or apartment in the sun. There will be time to view Faro and its alleyways and harbour- front another day. My first memories of living in Lagos are when I lived on a boat in the fishermen...

Sunshine, sardines and spoilt fishing villages in the Algarve

Advantages: Sunshine, beaches and scenic rocky coves, interesting inner towns
Disadvantages: Irish bars, fast food and tacky tourist shops

...Just in case there is anyone who doesn't know, the Algarve is on the coast in Southern Portugal. Most tourists get there by flying to Faro and many of the cheaper airlines fly into Faro. Therre are about a dozen options for hire cars at the Airport so you can select your favourite comapany and then drive off to find your accomodation in the Algarve. Driving seems safe and with the help of our Tomtom we found our way around easily rememberring of course to drive on the right side of the road. The Algarve; Having been unimpressed with our accommodation (Albufiera Jardim 1) and stayed in for an appointment with our representative from Resort Point Services or Resort Promotions ( another long tale of woe) we decided that we were not going to be put off the area by this and decided we would explore. ALBUFIRA: On Sunday after our abortive...

Lagos, Ideal Holiday for the Lazy.

Advantages: tree lined streets bars and cafe
Disadvantages: does get steep in places.

...Lagos, pronounced lagoosh is situated on Portugal's Algarve region, A beautiful place, with at one end a Castle which sits on the see edge,(now a museum), and at the other a superb boating harbour, which is accessible via a small bridge or drive to it, taking the first left after the roundabout next to the Monopoly super market. At the waters edge, there is a large promenade made of small cobbles, each one laid by hand by an army of workers, the prom is lined with palm trees, and plenty of seating stops, perfect to sit and watch the world go by, take a glance over the sea wall, and watch a fall array of fish and small squid feeding of the underwater vegetation. A note of warning, keep children's hands away from the tree bark, it cuts skin easily. The beach is accessed via two main points, one just pasted the Castle, some...

The Gem of the Algarve

Advantages: History, beaches, amenities, weather, friendly people, now closer to airport
Disadvantages: Too busy during summer months, mad drivers

...Lagos is positioned in one of the largest bays in the Algarve. The town was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, but unfortunatly most of the heritage dating back from those days was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755. Therefore most historic buildings are posterior to this date. I'd never been to Lagos until I moved back from England to Portugal. I had always stayed in the Eastern Algarve, towards Spain, for my holidays. For working reasons I had to establish myself around Lagos area, and I was truly impressed with the beauty of the town, as well as its well preserved heritage. With its narrow cobbled streets, a variety of shops, restaurants and long sandy beaches Lagos has a lot to offer. The weather, like in the rest of the Algarve, is mild all year round. I decided to add my review to make note that getting...

Lagos: the real capital of Nigeria!!!

Advantages: Bubbling city, pleasant places of interest
Disadvantages: Traffic Jams, over populated, police!!!

...It will be quite a challenge writing about this wonderful city, having lived there for many years. A very fast paced city it is and you certainly have to be tough and resilient to survive here. Lagos was formerly the capital of Nigeria, which happens to be the most populated country in the whole of Africa. It is even said that one in every black person is a Nigerian. During the Military rule in the 80;s though, the capital was moved to Abuja, much further inland. Lagos is by the Atlantic ocean, on the south west of the country. As any big metroplex would, it boasts of its highways, fly-overs, bridges, skyscrapers and the like. It has a population of perhaps 10million; perhaps because no one really knows the population. It tends to be more expensive than other parts of the country but virtually any large corporation that has any...

Family fun in the Algarve.

Advantages: Water parks, weather and accomodation.
Disadvantages: Three tired kids this morning!

...) and takes about 45 minutes to get to. The beach is lovely, beautiful white sands, the sea was cold but not freezing and you can walk quite far before it gets very deep. This was especially good for the children as the sea at the beach near our apartment was extremely rough and got very deep very quickly. Pria da Rocha was also good when we went there one evening for a meal, the food wasn?t the greatest or the cheapest but it is one of the most well known and very ?touristy?. I wasn?t very impressed by Pria da Rocha apart from the beach, so I wouldn?t advise anyone to go there apart from to visit the beach! We also went to Lagos, which is the only place I have ever heard of in the Algarve, the shops here were brilliant, as were the bars and restaurants and there was so much to do. There were boat rides you could take, lots of things going on in...

Diamond review  MOOSES GUIDE TO THE ALGARVE

Advantages: Loads to do/see, reasonably priced, great for seafood lovers
Disadvantages: Many places will rip you off, bull fighting

...I quite like this travel-writing lark ~ so if anyone needs a holiday tester, please let me know! The Algarve, Portugal was not really my holiday of choice, but more a holiday of cheapness and convenience. You see I can only take holiday in the school holidays due to teaching so this generally hikes up the price of my holiday and also means that wherever I go, I am almost guaranteed to have hoards of kids dive bombing me in the hotel swimming pool! Myself and a couple of mates were looking for a cheap holiday and managed to find one for £250 to the Algarve, the only trouble was that we wouldn't know where we were staying and to be honest, the Algarve never really appealed, but it was cheap so off we went, and one of the biggest bonuses was that the flight was only 2 hours 15 mins from Stansted ~ superb for 30+ degree heat!!! GENERAL...

TAVIRA A QUIET TOWN ON THE ALGARVE

Advantages: Small and friendly
Disadvantages: None for us.

...TAVIRA a small town on the Algarve, this is a very quiet place so if looking for Night Life , look elsewhere. If you are looking for Peace and Quiet and the Beauty of Nature then come to Tavira. Fly into FARO Airport, usually at the time of year we go, Early January for a pickmeup after the Xmas and New Year, I am disappointed if we have to pay more than £50 return on Easyjet from either East Midlands or Stansted. The flight times are good for us From East Mids normally 06:30 departure. Arrives FARO about 09:15. Tavira is located about 24 Kilometers towards the Spanish Boarder. We book our Transfer thru WWW.AUTO-FARO.COM They charge 40 Euros each way for the 4 of us. No extra charges that is what you pay even if flight late. They are very good and friendly, the Taxi driver will give you a little tour of Tavira...

Lagos my Love

Advantages: It's a very charming holiday destination
Disadvantages: On the touristy side... (if this bothers you)

...I went to Lagos shortly before end of the tourist season (middle September). GETTING THERE: I got there by taking the coach (4.20 euros) from FARO. I definately would recommend you to take the train instead (except at siesta time), it only costs about 1 euro more. The reason I do not recommend the coach is because delays can occur quite easily (my 2 hour journey turned into a 4.5 hour nightmare with no toilet break). STAYING IN LAGOS: Once I arrived there, I headed to the pre-booked youth hostel. This hostel is very popular, so pre-booking is essential, no matter when you travel. It's located in the town centre, is quite modern, staff is very friendly, nice mix of travellers and a very relaxed atmosphere. Price: 10 euros per night. There are lots of portugese people trying to earn extra euros by subletting rooms for tourists...
