Brick Lane
Advantages: Good ending
Disadvantages: quite boring and a bit hard going in places
...and an English mother. At the age of 3 her family moved to Bolton, England where she lived until she went to college in Oxford. Monica Ali now lives in South London with her husband and 2 children.
Brick Lane is Monica Ali's debut novel, when the novel was first published some Bengali Muslims did not like the way they were portrayed in the novel and planned a demonstration where they intended to burn copies of the book, although the demonstration went ahead no copies of the book were actually burned.
Brick Lane was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2003.
Since the Ali has had her second book, Alentejo Blue published which is a collection of stories set in Portugal.
The Story
The story begins in 1967 with Nazneen's birth in East Pakistan, she was born dead but by some miracle she began to breathe, after this Nazneen refused to suckle at her...

Brick Lane, the book
Advantages: Funny, thought-provoking
Disadvantages: None for me
...accept her Fate, to 'endure', yet this she struggled to do herself, often in tears & eventually heading for a tragic end. Nazneen is left confused by her mother's strange ways, possibly damaged by the very way she entered the world herself & having to accept that her mother could not endure her Fate. Still, she does her best when she leaves behind her family & the life she knew & is sent to London to marry a man much older than her. Before she leaves Bangladesh, she has nothing but a photograph of the man she will marry, Chanu, to tell her what her husband & new life will be like.
We follow Nazneen's life as she enters this new world, gradually learning more about Chanu & also about the place that is now her home, Brick Lane. To begin with, she seems like the typical village girl kind of wife, who will obey her husband & stay home...

Languishing in the lovely Lanes
Advantages: friendly service, great location
Disadvantages: wee bit overpriced for level of facilities
...I visited Brighton for the first time recently to celebrate Duskman's 30th birthday and I can report I had a fabulous time. Many factors contributed to it being brilliant but a large part of the experience can be attributed to our stay at The Lanes Hotel , a lovely little family run hotel located not in the historic Lanes area of the town as the name implies but on Marine Parade facing the seafront at Brighton.
I must confess the Lanes Hotel was not our first nor second choice for accommodation whilst in Brighton. We initially had planned to spend only one night in Brighton and stay in a trendy boutique hotel or somewhere that had luxurious facilities such as a pool and sauna. . However we did not realise that most decent hotels only took two night bookings at the weekend in spring and summer. It was time for a rethink and to...

Breakfast bagels at Brick Lane
Advantages: Great fun, good food and good shopping
Disadvantages: Many of the goods are fake or knocked off
...Brick Lane is situated in the Spitalfields area. It is well known all over East London for its huge Sunday morning market. This colourful event takes place on Brick Lane and some of the surrounding streets, and is the focus of many local peoples’ activities, legal or otherwise. This area has an interesting, sometimes sleazy past and it is worth taking a quick look round if you do go shopping at the market.
~~ A potted history of the Brick Lane area ~~
In medieval times this area was full of kilns used by brick and tile manufacturers. This gave Brick Lane its name that survives to this day. In the 16th century French Huguenot silk weavers moved into the area and bought some wealth into this poverty stricken neighbourhood. Ben Truman established the old Black Eagle Brewery at the junction of Hanbury Street in 1724...

The London Hilton on Park Lane - It's the Daddy!
Advantages: True five-star oasis of calm and comfort with a few tricks up its sleeve.
Disadvantages: It would be somewhat churlish to nit-pick. Read the review!
...I have just returned, very happy, from the Hilton. I have often returned, happy, from a Hilton, but this has always been - and will always be - THE Hilton. The London Hilton on Park Lane has, always been "The Hilton" and this 28-storey icon is a London landmark that I have wanted to stay in for nigh on 30 years. This weekend, the dream came true. Nor was the bubble burst.
Booking
I booked on-line through the Hilton website and was offered a rate of just under UKP 128, plus taxes. The room-only room rate of UKP 150 (about $300) was something of a snip and it would have been rude not to accept it; it was about half of what you'd normally expect to fork out for a room in this hotel, which holds some quite extraordinary accolades, including "Best Business Hotel in Europe 2005" and "Daily Telegraph Best British Hotel 2002".
I had...

ode to brick lane
Advantages: curry, bagels, markets
Disadvantages: grubby, scary 10 year olds
...I love Brick Lane. We moved here last year, so I get to see it all week round, not just on sundays when it plays host to the market.
Monday to Saturday, Brick Lane and the surrounding areas are a great place to live. It might not look like much, and sure, has the potential to be a little dodgy in places, but for the most part it has a brilliant atmosphere. Brick Lane itself has a very distinct feel, just walking along there brings my senses alive, sometimes with the smells from the competing curry houses, and their obligatory leaflet pushers, it's more like passing through some exotic souk than part of the hard grey London I love so much.
It's truly diverse, a mixing of cultures and lifestyles that makes this exotic dirty patch on the edge of the city completely unique.
Sundays on Brick Lane and spilling onto Bethnal Green Road...

Death is always 1 step ahead of Mandy Lane
Advantages: a good natural horror film, directed good etc.....
Disadvantages: lot's of stuff see inside
...he will make a name for himself sometime!
The main character of the film is obviously Mandy Lane. She is played by Amber Heard. Mandy Lane is a girl in school who all the boys want to get with, but they have no chance. She keeps herself to herself. Amber Heard is a known actress and she's starring in more and more films as she gets older and older. She has been in quite a few films since 2004, and her most noticeable and latest one is "Pineapple Express" where she plays Angie Anderson. She has 7 new films on the way out all of which she stars in these films are to be released during the rest of 2009 and all the way through 2010.
The film starts off with what I would call a prologue (that's what it would be called in a book) this is where the film shows an important bit that happened in the past before the real story begins. They are...

Take a trip down Remedy Lane
Advantages: Deep songs with both harsh and subtle complexeties
Disadvantages: Takes concentration to gain the most from it
...Pain of Salvation are a Swedish progressive metal band who were formed in 1991 by the brilliant Daniel Gildenlow who not only plays guitar on the LP but also provides the main vocals and composes all the music. Being progressive you can expect lots of key changes and strange time signatures but with a harder sound incorperating many other aspects of more modern metal.
'Remedy Lane' is the bands fourth album release which was written during a two month period in 2001 by Gildenlow and released to tremendous praise from the metal community when it finally reached the public in 2002.
As are all of their albums 'Remedy Lane' is a concept piece but whereas some of their subjects tackle the bigger questions about God and war 'Remedy' is a much more introspective view dealing with topics such as love, loss and lust and is in large...

Visit the North lanes.
Advantages: good atmosphere, good shops
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded
...If you are visiting Brighton this summer, the north lanes are a must for shopping, eating and drinking.
Its easy to reach the north lanes, they're just down the road from Brighton train station, about a 5 minute walk. At first, they dont look like much, but as you wander further in, you see more and more shops, restaurants and cafes. I prefer the North lanes to the south lanes, as the shops are more original and unique and there are many opportunities for eating.
The highlights of the lanes for me, are Juju - a second hand clothes store, the kensington - good pub, and the bead shop, where you can buy any beads imaginable and create your own jewellery. New shops are always coming into the lanes, as are many side stalls.
The area is pedestrianised, which makes it easy to walk down, and its situated quite near the other lanes...

Sampeng Lane - Bargains Galore
Advantages: Fantastic bargains and a tremendous experience.
Disadvantages: Very busy.
...Sampeng Lane is the main artery of Chinatown. It's a well kept secret that few tourists manage to find. The chances of stumbling across it are quite remote as it is a very narrow lane that runs from Songsawat Road in the East to Chakraphet Road in the West, running parallel to Charoen Krung (New Road) between there and the river. The whole lane is so narrow that you can cross it in two paces, or you could if it weren't so crowded. For the most part it is thronging with shoppers, mainly locals, with mopeds and motorbikes weaving between them. You must keep your wits about you for safety's sake but the bargains to be had are phenominal. Clothing, fabric, haberdashery, jewelry, to name but a few. You want cartoon ties - they're under a pound; strings of diamante that cost £12.99 a metre back home - £2.50 a metre; iron-on motives...
