Brighton Lanes
Advantages: Great if your looking for something different
Disadvantages: None
...We decided to fit Brighton into our plans of spending a week travelling from Scotland down the east coast and back up the west of England, so Brighton seemed like a good place to visit for a couple of days since we have a friend who has moved there.
Our Friend took us to Brighton Lanes and we were surprised at how quaint it is. It must be very old as it almost makes you feel like you have gone back in time!
The lanes lead around the town centre and contain all sorts of weird and wonderful shops from clothing to antiques, hand made sweets, health food shops, hand made beauty products and numerous jewellery shops. And all at competative prices.
It made a nice change from the usual high street shops and we spend many hours browsing their wares. Although we could have spent longer.
It is an ideal place for gifts as you are...

Languishing in the lovely Lanes
Advantages: friendly service, great location
Disadvantages: wee bit overpriced for level of facilities
...I visited Brighton for the first time recently to celebrate Duskman's 30th birthday and I can report I had a fabulous time. Many factors contributed to it being brilliant but a large part of the experience can be attributed to our stay at The Lanes Hotel , a lovely little family run hotel located not in the historic Lanes area of the town as the name implies but on Marine Parade facing the seafront at Brighton.
I must confess the Lanes Hotel was not our first nor second choice for accommodation whilst in Brighton. We initially had planned to spend only one night in Brighton and stay in a trendy boutique hotel or somewhere that had luxurious facilities such as a pool and sauna. . However we did not realise that most decent hotels only took two night bookings at the weekend in spring and summer. It was time for a rethink and to...

Brighton Rocks in The Lanes
Advantages: great location, friendly & knowledgable
Disadvantages: car parking & breakfast!!
...I had to attend a conference in Brighton recently, so hubby and I decided to treat ourselves and stay a few extra days, do some shopping and generally 'chill' out from work.
We choose the Thistle due to cost and availability really - many of the hotels on the travel website we use were fully booked or looked in need of paint and repair. This was advertised as being close to The Lanes and numerous restaurants as well as being sea front based.
LOCATION
The Thistle is a glass fronted, modern looking hotel, situated approx 200 yards from Brighton Pier, directly on the seafront.
I say modern looking, because most of the other hotels nearby were the old Victorian style, so the Thistle stood out somewhat!!!
Directly behind this hotel is The Lanes and various restaurants - so it really is close to all amenities as advertised...

Visit the North lanes.
Advantages: good atmosphere, good shops
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded
...If you are visiting Brighton this summer, the north lanes are a must for shopping, eating and drinking.
Its easy to reach the north lanes, they're just down the road from Brighton train station, about a 5 minute walk. At first, they dont look like much, but as you wander further in, you see more and more shops, restaurants and cafes. I prefer the North lanes to the south lanes, as the shops are more original and unique and there are many opportunities for eating.
The highlights of the lanes for me, are Juju - a second hand clothes store, the kensington - good pub, and the bead shop, where you can buy any beads imaginable and create your own jewellery. New shops are always coming into the lanes, as are many side stalls.
The area is pedestrianised, which makes it easy to walk down, and its situated quite near the other lanes...

Brighton Pier
Advantages: Free entry
Disadvantages: Gets very crowded
...Seaside piers seem to be a very British tradition and there are many different examples to be found in England and Wales, although oddly none exist north of the border in Scotland. Brighton's pier is one of the most famous of them all. Officially known as The Brighton Marine Palace Pier or the Palace Pier for short it officially opened in the May of 1899. By this date the Victorians and their predecessors had already built many other piers, including two earlier ones at Brighton.
Brighton's first pier was constructed in 1823. This was known as The Royal Suspension Chain Pier and still existed in 1891 when construction of the Palace Pier began. At this time the Chain Pier was considered to be unsafe and was in a state of disrepair so one of the conditions attached to the construction of the new pier was that this old one was demolished...

The heart of alternative Brighton
Advantages: Great variety of shops, nice location -very characterful
Disadvantages: can get crowded
...The North Laine is very easy to reach, when exiting Brighton Station, go onto the road that goes under the station forecourt (Trafalgar St), just go down the street a little and you will be in the North Laine. This is quite a large shopping area, comprising Trafalgar St, Sydney St, Kensington Gardens, Bond and one other street the name of which I have forgotten.
the choice of shops is very large indeed; you want cool skateboard type wear or more hippyish attire, you can find it here. You want good value cafes with interesting menus, weird esoteric shops which sell items like Bonsai Trees and comic, you want a variety of independent record shops with helpful staff, you want a shop selling guarana enhanced drinks, you want shops with an ecological and social conscience - you can find it all here at very reasonable prices.
This area...

Funky Streets of Brighton are a must
Advantages: Only one hour from London, great vibes, good bargains
Disadvantages: None!! Lots of fun for everyone..
...The Lanes of Brighton are one of the best places in England for the coolest gear and best vibes.
If you arrive via train from London, the Lanes are just down Queen Street towards the beach, and to the left. There are stores to cater to every taste, including mens and womens clothes, jewellrey, sunglasses, belts, funky art / craft places, bead shops and much much more... the selection is huge, and the ideas are much more exciting than the high street ones found in most major cities...
My favourite store is the Brighton Bead Shop (Sydney St). It has a wonderful range of all beads, and includes all the materials you need to make you own designs, starter kits for beginners, helpful and informative staff and all at really good prices. I head straight there as soon as get into Brighton.
In addition to all the cool shops, there is...

The Royal Albion Hotel, Brighton
Advantages: great location, cheap, nice rooms, excellent food
Disadvantages: no parking, quite dated
...of us which was a bit cheeky.
The ideal location of the hotel meant we could nip out into Brighton town centre whenever we wanted to do a spot of shopping in the famous 'Brighton lanes' or to grab a bite to eat from one of the many restaurants scattered about. We had not paid for dinner at the hotel and so ate at a restaurant called Fat Leo's in the evening which offered good Italian food for a decent price. After dinner we returned to the hotel at about half past nine and had a few drinks in the hotels Pavilion Bar which offered a wide range of drinks at a reasonable price.
The next morning we woke up early and went down for breakfast in Jenny's Restaurant, a full English breakfast was available and a number of different fruit juices including tea and coffee. The breakfast was lovely and the hotel staff bright and cheery, delivering...

The Booth Museum, Brighton
Advantages: Free admission, lots to see
Disadvantages: None for me
...The Booth Museum is located on Brighton's suburban back streets well away from the town centre but having said that it is on Dyke Road (the A2010) which is one of the major routes through the town and so it is relatively easy to find.
The museum is named after the Victorian natural historian Edward Thomas Booth who spent much of his life in Brighton. Primarily it houses his personal collection of stuffed birds but there are also animals, insects, fossils and skeletons. These collections were amassed during his lifetime and contain over half a million different specimens. He lived between 1840 and 1890.
Like most Victorian naturalists of the time he was an avid collector. It seems odd nowadays to think that someone that was considered to be such a lover of these creatures should hunt them down and shoot them. However we need to...

shopping with a difference!
Advantages: many quirky shops and places to eat and drink
Disadvantages: quite expensive, parking is a problem
...I recently spent a day in Brighton after visiting relatives who live down that way. The 17th century lanes were a real experience. Located slightly back from the seafront, the lanes are the oldest area in Brighton and Hove and used to be a medieval fishing village. Today, the narrow lanes are made up of many quirky little shops, selling antiques, jewellery and designer labels. There are many great shops just waiting to be discovered and numerous places to eat and drink. I thought it made a nice change to the usual high street shops and large shopping malls, although I didn't buy anything because most of the items were rather expensive.
As anybody who has been to Brighton before will know, parking is a real problem. We parked by the seafront on the road which leads to the marina. Here you can park for as long as you want and it won...
