Bramhall School Of Motoring
Advantages: Encouraging instructors, Lovely cars
Disadvantages: none!
...I wanted driving lessons for my 17th birthday so i could gain more independance however i did NOT want to drive in a mini, any other car was fine, just not a mini. So what does my mum do? Books my lessons with Bramhall school of motoring - purely minis. At first i was sceptical, i thought of the old style minis and thought they would be cramped and just not very nice to drive.
I was hugely mistaken.
The mini's are lovely, really comfortable and plenty of space. My instuctor is really patient with me and very encouraging. I was allowed to drive on my first lesson after being taught the basics so was impressed with that. So far i have only had 3 lessons so i can't comment on whether i pass first time or not , however i have booked my theory - only 3 weeks after first learning to drive a car!
The lessons sound pricey but they are...

Brick Lane
Advantages: Good ending
Disadvantages: quite boring and a bit hard going in places
...and an English mother. At the age of 3 her family moved to Bolton, England where she lived until she went to college in Oxford. Monica Ali now lives in South London with her husband and 2 children.
Brick Lane is Monica Ali's debut novel, when the novel was first published some Bengali Muslims did not like the way they were portrayed in the novel and planned a demonstration where they intended to burn copies of the book, although the demonstration went ahead no copies of the book were actually burned.
Brick Lane was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2003.
Since the Ali has had her second book, Alentejo Blue published which is a collection of stories set in Portugal.
The Story
The story begins in 1967 with Nazneen's birth in East Pakistan, she was born dead but by some miracle she began to breathe, after this Nazneen refused to suckle at her...

Brick Lane, the book
Advantages: Funny, thought-provoking
Disadvantages: None for me
...accept her Fate, to 'endure', yet this she struggled to do herself, often in tears & eventually heading for a tragic end. Nazneen is left confused by her mother's strange ways, possibly damaged by the very way she entered the world herself & having to accept that her mother could not endure her Fate. Still, she does her best when she leaves behind her family & the life she knew & is sent to London to marry a man much older than her. Before she leaves Bangladesh, she has nothing but a photograph of the man she will marry, Chanu, to tell her what her husband & new life will be like.
We follow Nazneen's life as she enters this new world, gradually learning more about Chanu & also about the place that is now her home, Brick Lane. To begin with, she seems like the typical village girl kind of wife, who will obey her husband & stay home...

Learn to drive with the best!
Advantages: Do intensive and semi-intensive courses, pass plus, etc. Experienced Instructors
Disadvantages: Only serve area within 10 miles of Mansfield
...*Who are Sherwood School of Motoring?*
Sherwood driving school operates within a ten mile radius of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. It's being going for over forty years, and is one of the best, if not 'the' best, driving schools in our area.
As well as standard lessons, Sherwood offer many courses, such as intensive and semi-intensive courses for learners and Pass Plus for people who've passed their driving test. They do refresher courses, and will teach people in automatic or manual cars - depending on what licence you wish to get. They provide theory test tuition, and also do mock practical tests. They even help to teach people who want to become Instructors!
*My Experience of Sherwood*
I was very lucky when deciding to learn how to drive, as in the town I live there are lots of driving schools to choose from. There are...

Languishing in the lovely Lanes
Advantages: friendly service, great location
Disadvantages: wee bit overpriced for level of facilities
...I visited Brighton for the first time recently to celebrate Duskman's 30th birthday and I can report I had a fabulous time. Many factors contributed to it being brilliant but a large part of the experience can be attributed to our stay at The Lanes Hotel , a lovely little family run hotel located not in the historic Lanes area of the town as the name implies but on Marine Parade facing the seafront at Brighton.
I must confess the Lanes Hotel was not our first nor second choice for accommodation whilst in Brighton. We initially had planned to spend only one night in Brighton and stay in a trendy boutique hotel or somewhere that had luxurious facilities such as a pool and sauna. . However we did not realise that most decent hotels only took two night bookings at the weekend in spring and summer. It was time for a rethink and to...

* Rock School *
Advantages: Plot is Different
Disadvantages: Couldn't Watch it a few times!
...I have decided to review 'The School of Rock' film having recently watched it. The School of Rock is an American film released in the United Kingdom on February 6th 2004. The film comes under the comedy and musical genres. This film was directed by Richard Linklater and stars Jack Black. This movie is a PG. Running time of this movie is one hundred and eight minutes (twelve minutes short of two hours),
Wannabe rock star , Dewey , is 'sacked' from his band and because he has many bills to pay and is down in the dumps , he feels he needs to get out there and find a job. So , he becomes a substitute teacher at a private school. What will happen when Dewey takes his 'rock and roll' attitude to the private school ? Watch School Of Rock To Find Out!
On first impression , this film didn't look my cup of tea at all. My friend had the DVD...

Schools Out
Advantages: different game modes
Disadvantages: can bore of it quite quickly
...I'm a big fan of the tycoon series of games - mall tycoon, zoo tycoon, casino tycoon etc so I thought that school tycoon would be another game to add to that list. I bought it for £5 at PC world and, at that price, you pretty much can't go wrong!
There are a couple of different modes to this game. There is the story mode, where you have to build a school from scratch on a limited budget and operate at a profit but also meet the standards of education that you need to achieve eg sports/discipline/attendance etc. You can do this by employing the right (strict) teachers. This is where the challenge lies as obviously there is a trade-off between employing the best teachers and paying lower wages. You also get to design the layout of your school and choose what to build and where. There are facilities such as cafeterias, staff rooms...

School memories
Advantages: n/a
Disadvantages: n/a
...It is my 200th review on here and I wanted to do something a little bit different. As I haven't written a Ciao Café review for some time I thought that it would be a nice change. This topic caught my eye seeing as I am now almost qualified as a teacher and wanted to reflect back on my own school experience! So, the following are a selection of my ten best school memories. The last one isn't so much a best memory rather than an embarrassingly funny one.
The frog skeleton
My year one teacher was a lovely lady named Mrs Keavney. She was very into wildlife and therefore many of our lessons would end up outside in the schools wildlife area or investigating nature in some way. She was keen on us to bring things in to show the rest of the class, so I was delighted when one day we discovered a perfect frog skeleton in my greenhouse...

Breakfast bagels at Brick Lane
Advantages: Great fun, good food and good shopping
Disadvantages: Many of the goods are fake or knocked off
...Brick Lane is situated in the Spitalfields area. It is well known all over East London for its huge Sunday morning market. This colourful event takes place on Brick Lane and some of the surrounding streets, and is the focus of many local peoples’ activities, legal or otherwise. This area has an interesting, sometimes sleazy past and it is worth taking a quick look round if you do go shopping at the market.
~~ A potted history of the Brick Lane area ~~
In medieval times this area was full of kilns used by brick and tile manufacturers. This gave Brick Lane its name that survives to this day. In the 16th century French Huguenot silk weavers moved into the area and bought some wealth into this poverty stricken neighbourhood. Ben Truman established the old Black Eagle Brewery at the junction of Hanbury Street in 1724...
