Langdale Pikes Report
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air...
Disadvantages: None
...Suddenly, you find yourself in the Lake District? You are heading along the A592 with Windermere to your left. You look to the north and in the distance you see a curious mountain formation. Two hill tops strangely positioned against each other. What is that? You wonder. It is ? or should I say they are - the Langdale Pikes. And today, constant reader, I am going to take you by the hand and guide you across this beautiful terrain. Hope you have brought your boots and some food and water. Best make you sure you have your waterproofs too, it can rain a bit here, as I am sure you might know.
We move onto the A593, heading towards Coniston. But before Coniston we turn right for Dungeon Ghyll (B5343), where our destination is. If you have arrived here not knowing where the Lake District is, then I shall briefly tell you that the Lake...

The Great Langdale Campsite near Cumbria Way
Advantages: Excellent facilities
Disadvantages: High camp charges
...When the Lake District was finally open after the foot and mouth situation, we decided to give it a first visit.
Where we went:
Amberside town was rather crowded but still okay. We spent 5 days there but it rained for 4 days while we were there. Though the weather was bad, the beautiful lakes and hills sort of made up for it.
Where we camped:
Where you camp depends on which hill range you are trekking...Being adventurous we tried to trek up Scafell Pike on our second day in lake district. Hence, the nearest campsite would be the Great Langdale campsite managed by the National Trust, which is abt 10 miles from Amberside.
The campsite has very good facilites. The showers are very powerful and have hot and cold water with adjustable temperatures. It also provides 3-pt socket for charging your electronic devices (mainly...

Marymoose relaxes, with three reviews in one!
Advantages: Nice room, mainly good food, fantastic massage!!!
Disadvantages: Very poor service and organisation overall, particularly in Purdeys, really let down the experienc
...A month or so ago I decided that hubby and I needed some serious rest and relaxation, so I browsed the Internet to see if anything took my fancy. I came across a Spa deal at the Langdale Hotel and Country Club near Ambleside (39 miles from us), and thought that this sounded like just the thing I was after. The website I have to say is excellent, and if you do decide ever to visit then certainly check it out, there are photos (although saying that they can make it look a bit better than it is!) of everything ? rooms, spa, restaurant. Plus it is regularly updated.
Having consulted with hubby (he wasn?t particularly keen I have to say) and informing him that it was great value at just £250 for the both of us, he begrudgingly agreed to it.
This review is a lengthy one ? it is essentially three reviews in one ? the hotel, Purdey...

Good facilities but expensive
Advantages: Excellent facilities
Disadvantages: Expensive to camp
...The Great Langdale campsite as the name suggests is in the Great Langdale area where the Langdale Pikes lies in the Lake District. It is abt 10miles drive from the Amberside town.
Pros:
The campsite is near to the Scafell range of hills, with Harrison Stickle and Langdale Pikes along Cumbria way if you fancy any trekking up the hills and fellwalking.
Being managed by the National Trust, the campsite provides very good facilities. The showers are powerful with hot and cold water and you can adjust the temperatures of the water. And this campsite is one of the fews which provides 3-point sockets for power supply in the toilets. You can use it to charge your electronic appliances and also use your hair dryer..
There are also drying rooms available for you to dry your shoes, jackets whatever if they get damped. And noise level...

From Gunpowder to tranquility
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...For me the Lake District, Cumbria, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I love the diversity of scenery; from lakes to high fells this place has it all!
There are numerous places to stay and the Langdale hotel and country club is one of my favourites. Our family first discovered the place about 5 years ago when we were self catering in a house nearby. Part of the package was free membership to the Langdale country club and all its facilities. We loved it so much we decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a stay in the hotel. Since then we have stayed on about 6 occasions.
Where is it?
************
The langdale hotel is situated right in the heart of the Lake District national park in great Langdale a few miles from Ambleside.
As you wind your way into Elterwater and the great Langdale valley the high fells...

The Roof of England
Advantages: A must for mountian lovers in England - anywhere!
Disadvantages: NA
...At 3210 feet (977m), Scafell Pike is one of only four 'three-thousanders' (mountains over 3000 feet) in England. It is also the highest mountain in England. Not too grand a height, when you think of the Alps of Switzerland, France and the like - or even closer to home Scotland - but if you ever do scale this mountain, believe you me, you will know that you have climbed a mountain!
Scafell Pike is situated in the mid to southern end of the English Lake District. Millions flock here every year and walking in general has become more popular over the last few years. It is nestled between other grand mountains, with equally grand names, such as Great Gable and Pillar - names that spur on thoughts of adventure and action.
Popular routes to this mountain are from Wasdale Head, Borrowdale, Eskdale and Great Langdale. These villages...

Perhaps i will retire here
Advantages: Beautiful location, pretty town, great base for walking
Disadvantages: The rain, too many people in high season, access
....
Ambleside is great as a base for seeing the surrounding area - i'd recomment a trip to Bowness on Windermere and also Grasmere village. Also take a trip down langdale where the scenery is breathtaking and don't forget to stop in at old dungeon ghyll hotel for a pint of the lake districts finest ales.
Places to Eat - For pub food i would recommend the White Lion. For lunch time i would recommend the Apple Pie bakery / cafe this has absolutely lovely cakes and tea (though you may have to sell a kidney to buy it). There are a couple of good chippys aswell.
Places to stay - There are hundreds of hotels and B&B's in and around Ambleside but unfortunately i can't make any recommendations as i've never stayed in any of them - i'd either stay at my sisters or choose to camp in great langdale.
Nightlife!!? As it has a small university there...

Walking, Cycling, The Arts, something for everyone.
Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: You have to be relatively fit to enjoy it.
... Grizedale Forest.
Location
Grizedale is located between Esthwaite Water and Coniston. Parking always used to be a problem here, but they've created a larger car park a couple of years ago, so chances are you shouldn't have a problem now.
To reach the forest from the North you need to take the A591 to Ambleside, leave Ambleside A593 to Langdale/Coniston. First left B5286 to Hawkshead. Bypass Hawkshead follow B5286 south then first right at tourist sign "Theatre in the Forest", follow to Grizedale approx 2 miles.
Or from the South M6 junction 36 take A591 first exit A590, Barrow follow A590 past Newby Bridge Havethwaite Crossroads, right turn, tourist sign "Grizedale Forest Park", follow signs for Satterthwaite/Grizedale north.
During the high season (Easter to Oct/Nov) you can reach Grizedale via the Cross...

A beautiful walk with stunning scenery
Advantages: Lovely scenery, safe walking, clean and tidy
Disadvantages: None for us
...containing maps and information about the tarn and the various trees, insects, birds and animals that you may see during your walk. There is also a whiteboard where you are invited to make a note of any birds or animals that you see during your walk.
The walk
We walked down from the car park to the tarn and basically walked all the way round ? it was that simple! No maps are needed and the track is clear and easy to navigate. There are no boulders to scramble over as there are in a lot of places in the Lake District!
A complete circuit of the tarn is about a mile and a half on a good path which is suitable not only for walkers but for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are plenty of benches on the way round so you can sit and admire the stunning views of the Helvellyn range and the Langdale Pikes and take as long over the walk as you like...

Wordsworth lived here a long time ago .
Advantages: pretty place, lots of interesting places about Wordsworth
Disadvantages: touristy
...the area on a walking and exploring holiday. The Lake Grasmere is to the south of the village. You can hire boats on the lake. There is a small island in the lake, not sure if you can visit it now, I think you can. . There are some easy low flattish walks around the lake, if you want a more challenging walk then Scafell Pikes, Helvellyn, Skiddaw and the Langdale Pikes are nearby. It has a long time since I have walked these . Wish my foot was better I would love to be up on the tops, trouble is these walkin routes are so popular at peak times that you do see a lot of people on the walks and There is concern about soil erosion on some tracks. If you are watching the Wainwright series on TV this is one of the areas he walked on
If you are a bird watcher the countryside around Grasmere is good for birds and Red squirrels, butterflies well as...
