The Burj Al Arab
Advantages: Read Opp
Disadvantages: Price
...This review is about my time at the magnificent and luxury hotel the Burj Al Arab. I was lucky enough to spend two nights at this hotel during New Years Eve and New Years day 2008/2009. I had a friend who?s dad did a tone of import export business and thus I even managed to stay their for free, yes that?s right for free, under the condition that I paid for all my own food, and drink, which I was more than happy to at the time.
Now everyone has either heard about this hotel, been their or at least seen the pictures of what it looks like, and let me tell you its even more breathtaking in real life. This review will hopefully give you an insight into the hotel, information regarding all the rooms in particular the one I stayed in, what the facilities are like, what the food and bar is like as well as the service provided by the hotel...

Mountain Language
Advantages: Clear and important political message
Disadvantages: Direct, dim, and disturbing
...Mountain Language (1988)
By
Harold Pinter (1930- )
Mountain Language is a very short one-act play by the English playwright Harold Pinter. The first scene shows a young woman and an elderly woman as they go to visit one of their relatives who was accused of speaking the forbidden mountain language. The older woman was bitten by one of the dogs in the prison, and yet the officer and sergeant torture her and her companion with stupid questions and harass the latter sexually. We see in the second scene that the elderly woman was in the prison to visit her son. The woman tries to talk to her son with the mountain language she is used to, for she doesn't know the capital language, yet the officer starts jabbing her with a stick. Still, she manages to tell her son that his wife and three kids are waiting for him. In the third scene...

The Arab Touch
Advantages: Old part of Singapore
Disadvantages: Not very big
...Arab Street in Singapore isn't very big and there isn't that much to see in the area.
Historically, Arab traders from Yemen and the Middle East, took up residence in this part of Singapore. Most notable from these Arab traders was Shaikh Mustafa al-Juneid who contributed considerably towards the local community.
Arab Street is in an area known as the Arab Quarter. The most famous landmark here is the Sultan Mosque, on North Bridge Road, distinguished by its giant golden dome. It is one of the first mosques to be purposely built in Singapore.
Around the mosque are streets with distinctive Arab names such as Baghdad Street, Muscat Street and Haji Lane. These are lined with Muslim restaurants selling Halal food and shops selling Batiks and silks, along with other handicrafts and gift items.
The other distinguishing landmark...

Is Speech and Language Therapy for you?
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...As many of you know, I am at university studying to become a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). I decided that this is what I wanted to do a couple of years ago and so far, overall, I'm enjoying the course.
What is Speech and Language Therapy?
When I tell people I am at university, they immediately ask what I am studying. When I say 'Speech and Language Therapy' some people say 'so you can help me to talk', this really annoys me as there are so many more dimensions to this career. It also disappoints me that so many people are ill-informed, so I'd like to think this review might help some people that don't know exactly what s a SLT is. Also I hope to provide information on to people who think they might have interest in enrolling on a course.. However, there are also lots of people who appreciate the type of course I am...

Try a new Language!
Advantages: fun, something new and different,
Disadvantages: can be expensive
...+ What is Sign Language? +
Sign Language is the language for the deaf and is also preferred by the Hard of Hearing community as well. The language is non-verbal and uses the hands and facial expressions to communicate with others. The language has developed over hundreds of years as well as creating new signs for new things in the world. Also the language keeps up with the new technology as our world develops over the years
There are 5,000,000 - 10,000,000 who are deaf or Hard of Hearing in the UK. Around 50,000 use British Sign Language (B.S.L) in the UK. Many of the deaf community prefer using BSL as there first language. Many people will need to encounter a deaf person at least once in their life so communication needs to be at its best for both sides of the conversations to be understood. This is why more people need to know...

Watch your language
Advantages: A telling critique of the manipulation of language for political ends
Disadvantages: Not quite as convincing about the "mangling" of language
...John Humphrys is one of a number of writers and media luminaries who have lately turned their attention to modern trends in the use of the English language. Like most of his confrères, he finds much to deplore.
Humphrys' book 'Lost for Words' is aptly subtitled 'The Mangling and Manipulating of the English language'. In 'mangling' and 'manipulating' it encompasses two distinct themes. The first is how clumsy or convoluted usage can rob words of their meaning and impede clear thought. The second is how cynically contrived usage can mislead people and manipulate their thinking.
On the first of these themes he is interesting and often amusing, but he says little that is new, and I am not sure that he always gives a fair hearing to the counter-arguments. On the second he is both knowledgeable and powerfully...

Learn more than just a language.
Advantages: Brilliantly comprehensive.
Disadvantages: Bit dry and academic sometimes.
...The Loom of Language - Frederick Bodmer
Long review warning!!
This is going to shock some folk. I am reviewing a book that was first printed in 1944, and has been regularly reprinted since. I am on my third edition, having acquired my first in 1982 when I started studying German.
The book is in four parts, and with appendices is nearly 700 pages long. I recommend 'dipping in'.
Many reviews on the internet for this book suggest it is to be utilised to help people learn languages, to me this is a very shallow view. It is much, much more than that. It is an academic (sometimes a little dry) attempt to go on a language 'journey', if I list the chapter titles and give you a brief overview, you will get an idea.
~~Introduction~~
The first words in the book drew me in; "What language we speak depends on a geographical accident...

Psychology of language hard to read
Advantages: Highly detailed and includes a lot of information
Disadvantages: Heavy going and hard to find relevant information
...This book was a set text for the communication module in my degree. I used it quite a bit whilst doing the module, but it's very hard to dip into, and I often struggled to isolate the information I actually needed.
The book is very informative, and covers a broad range of topics, in much more detail than I had expected given the range of topics. The style of writing felt heavy and I found it put me off the subject of the psychology of language (having read other books since I have become much more interested in the area). To me, the book seemed aimed at people whose basic knowledge of the subject was much higher than mine, which was contrary to the book's claim to be an introduction to the area of psychology of language.
One thing that the book was very helpful for was the detailed further reading sections. I seldom used the resources...

The Language Of Life - Everything But The Girl
Advantages: Excellent Songs, Thought Provoking Lyrics
Disadvantages: Only Ten Tacks
...The fifth Album from Everything But The Girl, entitled The Language of Life hit the shops in 1990. Despite my slight disappointment with its predecessor, Idlewild, I had fallen in love with their first three Albums and therefore I awaited this release eagerly.
Whilst Idlewild had some good songs on it, it somehow lacked a sense of direction, it was as if Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo that are Everything But The Girl, were unsure of which direction they should be going in, or maybe they were just scared of being put into a category.
The Album contains ten tracks as below:
Driving
Get Back Together
Meet Me In The Morning
Me And Bobby D
Language Of Life
Take Me
Imagining America
Letting Love Go
My Baby Don't Love Me
The Road
The Album opens with Driving, the only song to be released as a single from this Album...

A little introduction to arabic for everyone..
Advantages: See review
Disadvantages: See review
...* Initial Note*
I have been in the United Arab Emirates for a while now, well 5 years, and have picked up a little bit of arabic on the way..
I will start with a little bit of an introduction, in to what formed the arabic language in the United Arab Emirates (-the country that Dubai is in)
The "original" arabic comes from Yemen. Now a lot of th e gulf countries speak this, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and even Iraq. The thing is with the United Arab Emirates, especially Dubai, that it has such a diverse culture here, with people from all corners of the globe, predominantly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri lanka, Indonesia, The Phillipines, as well as a good percentage of Europeans.
This has not only affcted the traditional attitudes of the country (if you ever visit, you will notice that there is a very...
