When you tell people who?ve been before that your off to Barcelona they will tell you about one street in the City, La Rambla. The same can be said for any guide book you look in, this is down as one of the main streets in the City where the sea is linked with the middle of the City. La Rambla stretches from Plaça de Catalunya for one mile down towards the sea Port Vell and the Colom La Rambla. The mile walk takes about 15 minutes but this is one of few streets in the city where Pedestrians take privilege with a large cobbled walkway with a road up either side for heading in each direction. Location, location, location

Advantages: Location, value for money, free internet laptop usage
Disadvantages: Not many hangers

...many hangers but that would be my only gripe. Each of the rooms had the facility to be turned into a family room but the beds were discreetly folded up against the wall in all the rooms, sometimes behind a wardrobe area. There was free internet access and a laptop in each room which was useful once we discovered how to get @ on a Spanish keyboard (Alt/Gr plus the @ key). I'd stayed right on the Ramblas once before but this was just far enough away to avoid the late night noise (except on the night when Barcelona beat Chelsea, ha!). Being so central the hotel is just near the Liceu metro station and within easy stretch of all the sights and shopping. The street outside the hotel is pedestrianised but is only about 25 yards from Las Ramblas. We booked private transport from the airport and stopped on Las Ramblas but the driver helped...

...I didn't get far on my first walk along La Rambla as we decided to sit outside one of the many cafes and have a large drink of Sangrea, making the most of the sunny spring afternoon. Anyone who enjoys watching street entertainers such as those in Covent Garden, though seeming to appear every few metres, and Spanish singers and dancers should be fascinated with this place. Even when the occasional male dancers get a bit carried away and take off their tops, not a pretty sight, in an attempt to earn some extra money from those watching in amusement. ...Whilst in Barcelona earlier this year we were looking for somewhere to visit that hadn't been on my tourist's agenda on my previous visits. Having spent a morning at the aquarium in the port are we headed for the Zoo. Located in the middle of the City it is well signposted in every direction and features as one of the main stops on all of the sightseeing tour buses routes. There are a couple of car parks located near to all of the entrances and again this is all well signposted from the city's main access routes. Over the last couple of years we've visited a few Zoos and Aquariums and it would be fair to say that Barcelona is one of the biggest Zoos. Las Ramblas crossed with a 70's Council Estate

Advantages: Low pressure shops, cool cafes and good for people watching
Disadvantages: Pretty much the same stock you'd see anywhere else

Let's be fair, it's not a classic strolling and window shopping street like Barcelona's Las Ramblas, or Paris's Champs Elysees but it has a similar buzz. We were there just a day before Diwali, the festival of lights. Although the celebrations in the mostly Sikh state of Punjab are relatively low key compared to more Hindu areas of the country, we still found enormous displays of tiny lights being laid out in the main plaza of Sector 17 with little children fighting to light them. It was very moving. If you go to Chandigarh, you really should take a look at Sector 17. But if you want tourist-related shopping and you aren't in the market for everyday stuff, you won't need to stay too long. If you've been out in the wilds you may well appreciate access to a double espresso or a chocolate muffin...

Hotel Balmes - great hotel in a great spot of Barcelona!

Advantages: *Great location to Metro stations *Modern, clean and comfortable furnishings *Good staff
Disadvantages: *Pool is small *Expensive food and drinks in the hotel

...because of the direction it faces (sun seems to be blocked out for part of the day) so it may not suit those who wish to sit by the pool all day. We never saw anyone eating at the hotel, so I can't vouch for how good or bad the food is - maybe they just ate out like us! The hotel also had a computer with free internet access, which was also very useful for checking journeys and routes for our upcoming day trips! The location of the hotel was great we found - it's about 10 minutes walk to the nearsest tube (metro) station and about 25 minutes walk to Las Ramblas (the main shopping and tourist street). There were also several cafes and restaurants nearby, including a Haagen Dasz restaurant...! Wow.
