The Church of St Lawrence, Eyam
Advantages: Lots of history, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Not everyones choice of a day out
...The small Derbyshire village of Eyam is most famous for its association with the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The plague was brought here from London in 1666 via infected cloth and within just a few weeks over half of the population of Eyam had died. Many people are drawn here by this moving story and those that know the story well will know that that the Church of St Lawrence that stands in the centre of this pretty village is paramount in the story.
When the plague struck in 1666 the Church had already been standing for almost five centuries. However in those days it was dedicated to St Helen and was not renamed until around 1900. The Church that we see today almost certainly stands on an ancient Saxon worship site and it thought that the stone foundations of this Church are probably of Saxon origin.
In 1868 this Church...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Lawrence Cat Shedder
Advantages: Very effective and Easy to Clean
Disadvantages: none
...This review is for the Lawrence Cat Shedder, however, as it this is just a miniature replica of the dog shedder, I can?t see there being a lot of difference.
I adopted two cats a couple of years ago, one of which has a very sleek coat which turned out to be notoriously hard to groom. Since then I have been on a quest to find a brush that actually takes the dead fur off him, not just for the sake of my vacuum cleaner, but because it?s not nice or healthy for him not to be stuck with dead hair on him. My quest has lead me to come home at weekends clutching a new brush or comb wondering if this would be ?the one?, to the exasperated sighs and rolling of eyes of my boyfriend that I?d bought ANOTHER brush! One after one, I groomed, but they took enough hair off. After about my 5th cat brush it was a quest no longer - it was now my mission...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Martin Lawrence Live - Runteldat
Advantages: Hilarious throughout with a twist of philosophy.
Disadvantages: Could easily offend many people. Special features don't add much.
...One weekend I was on the lookout for a good comedy film and I came across this Martin Lawrence stand up. Having only seen in him good cop - bad cop movies before (all of which I found amazingly funny) I wasn't aware that this was where he started his career so I thought I'd give him a shot.
It starts with a short film about the trials and tribulations (a phrase you shall hear throughout the stand-up) in Martin's life, both personally and professionally, and is a real eye-opener for those who just thought of him as an uncomplicated comedy actor. The stand-up itself starts with the obligatory thankyou's and minor insults directed at the crowd but once he gets into his flow his comedy brilliance really shines through.
As opposed to one-liners Martin goes down a more story telling route staying on one subject only long enough to make...

Tackle this cracking read. (My Life - Lawrence D)
Advantages: Interesting, frank, well written
Disadvantages: None
...As an avid rugby fan I have recently read 3 autobiographies , Dallaglio's, Martin Johnson's and Jonny Wilkinson's. For me Dallaglio's was the bes read by some distance.
Looks
The cover of this book features a closeup of Lawrence in the rain playing for Wasps issuing a rallying cry to the troops. I think this captures the man perfectly and this view is further enhanced by reading the book. The back cover is a great shot of Dallaglio picking up from the back of the scrum for England vs New Zealand.
Format
The book starts right at the beginning of Dallaglio's life and chronicles his rugby career from the very beginnings through to the end of his playing days. The book is frank and to the point. Nothing is overlooked and you do feel like you know the man. Although the matches are well described and a great...

Man's best giant!
Advantages: Fantastic temperament, loyal, great with children and adults alike, good guard dogs.
Disadvantages: Say goodbye to your immaculate home and hello to drool!
...In this review, I'll first start with my own experiences with Great Danes and then give you the "low down" on the breed.
When my friend Dave (later my partner) told me he was going to get a dog for himself and his pub - I thought "ooh lovely, a nice little Spaniel would look really cosy in front of the fire". I was in for a shock when he brought home a Great Dane a few weeks later!
"A Great Dane??? What on earth do you want such a big lumox of a dog like that for? They grow too big to sit on your knee, he/she will knock you over and the punters?" Well I won't repeat what I thought they would do!
How wrong I was
Bailey - a 16 week old Great Dane black (I'll explain the colours later) arrived via car with my partner and his son complete with full sick bag. I didn't live there then and Dave found it hard to train the dog...

Your very own guardian angel on a lead!
Advantages: Loyal, loving, gentle, fun, great characters
Disadvantages: Can be a little heavy when they sit on your knee!
...I don't like to do things by halves - to me if something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly, so when my new husband and I were looking to get a dog shortly after we married I was happy to finally achieve a dream I had since childhood and we went out to buy a Great Dane.
Getting a Great Dane shouldn't be something you do lightly and you certainly shouldn't be doing it on a whim. Fully grown a dog weighs in at something like 13 stone (a bitch around 8-9 stone) so you do need to know exactly what you are taking on. That said, they are in general a very docile breed, but a lot depends on how you rear them as to how easy they are to have around the house.
We eventually went on to breed and show our Danes and one key piece of advice we gave to all would be puppy purchasers was NEVER, ever, wrestle with your Great Dane...

Four Iron In The Soul - Lawrence Donegan
Advantages: Funny, despairing and factual all in one. Shows the true life on the professional golf circuit
Disadvantages: Although interesting and funny, may not appeal to non golfers
...Writing about his experiences Lawrence Donegan becomes a caddy for professional golfer Ross Drummond for a season on the European Tour. Drummond is a typical 'journeyman pro' a good golfer in his youth and a promising start to his golfing career but when donegan joins him we find drummond in the twilight of his playing career hiking around the world trying to find some form to make ends meet. Donegan having never caddied before of course does not help matters and his learning process combined with Drummond's lack of form provides a realistic, humorous but but also sad look at the life of professional golf from the bottom up.
This odd couple set up and lots of background stories of how the caddies on the tour live and travel provides a funny, witty but ultimately tragic account of the struggles that occur at the 'other' end...

... LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN
INTRODUCTION
Anyone who has been following my recent film and DVD reviews (and if you have, thank you!!) would be forgiven for thinking that this was David Lean season!!
David Lean has produced so many of my favourite films and is without doubt one of our finest directors.
I am nearly at the end (stop cheering) of my reviews of his work - although there are still a couple tucked away (sorry!!) this review is about a film that in my opinion is one of the best pieces of film making ever.
Lawrence of Arabia gained a grand total of 7 Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Musical Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Art Direction) in the Academy Awards ceremony of 1962.
This review is about the adaption of Lawrence...
