The latest on Leeds
Advantages: Excellent Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Too many students and not enough facilities
...As a current second year student at Leeds University i thought i would share my opinions and experiences of this university with you.
Leeds is now the most popular choice for undergraduates and has the largest number of undergraduate applications in the UK. With over 23,000 undergraduates alone, Leeds is an excellent place to study.
When deciding on which university to attend I had certain things I was looking for and so I thought I?d write this opinion based on these areas.
ACCOMODATION
Leeds university has a wide range of halls of residence including catered and self catered. I stayed in self catered accommodation for my first year in Devonshire Flats which is part of Devonshire Hall. The flats are very modern and clean and each flat has 6 private bedrooms and a kitchen and bathroom (some are en-suite). They are located...

GO Leeds
Advantages: Reputation, quality of facilities, sports and nightlife
Disadvantages: Expensive accommodation
...I have been a student at Leeds University for 5 years now, and have experienced it both as an undergraduate and as a postgraduate student. So, I should have a good feel for the place by now!! I took my degree in Geophysics in the Earth Sciences Department, and then stayed on to do a PhD working on volcanic earthquakes.
Leeds University is one of the old red brick Universities, which received investment from the local textile industry to help it expand in the early years. Leeds University has an excellent reputation and over 6000 students graduate from the university every year. The Chancellor of the university is Melvin Bragg, and I was lucky to have him presiding over my graduation ceremony (the photo is on the mantle piece!).

The Wendy House, Leeds University Union
Advantages: Great mix of people, music and cheap drinks
Disadvantages: Disadvantages? What are they then???
...going along I'd thoroughly recommend it! Check out the website first at www.thewendyhouse.org. This also has a photo gallery, a monthly competition to win tickets, a map for how to get there, lovely colourful fliers featuring various characters from cartoons/ kids tv programmes and if all this isn't enough, there's some games on there too!
Getting there is reasonably easy. I can't say what buses go that way as I don't know, but if you go by the map you can walk from Leeds city centre (if you don't mind and your shoes aren't too tight!) or by taxi, which is about the easiest mode of transport. The website also includes a useful link to local B&Bs if you want somewhere to stay and don't have mates with crash space in Leeds.
I would thoroughly reccommend trying this venue at least once on a Wendy House night. There's a brilliant party...

What a uni!
Advantages: Great friendly city, cheap living, good reputation, excellent computer facilities
Disadvantages: Traffic, not particularly cheap union
...I'm currently a second year student at the University of Leeds and I 100% recommend it!!
COMPUTING FACILITIES
****************************
I would say that one of the strengths of Leeds University is its number of computer clusters. It has absolutely loads! There are 29 clusters currently provided by ISS (the university's computer network people) with over 1600 computers between them. I am currently sat in a rather large cluster with many, many computers free. ISS also provide screens telling you where computers are free, if the cluster of your first choice is full; so you can pretty much always find a computer if you want one!
ISS also offer quite extensive wireless coverage over the campus. This means you can take your own laptop into uni and connect to the Internet via the university network. One of the main wireless areas...

Long Live Leeds
Advantages: A fantastic, fun place to be
Disadvantages: You have to leave when you finish your course!
...While browsing through Ciao, I noticed that no one had given their opinion on the University of Leeds for a while so I thought I would share mine with you.
I began my study at Leeds in October 1990 (yes, that long ago!) but I'm sure it hasn't changed much and I would imagine it's only changed for the better.
When we arrived (I was lucky enough to have a friend from school on the same course) we quickly found our accomodation began to get acclimatised after being welcomed and given lots of information on what lay ahead for us. Although I was initially in a university flat (didn't get on with room mate) we both ended up at Bodington Hall approx. 4 miles from the University in Lawnswood. It may seem a long way but this was not a problem as there are buses which come into the Hall grounds and take you right to the Uni. I thought...

Lovely Leeds
Advantages: Lots to see and do
Disadvantages: The weather can be disappointing
...I have lived in Leeds all my life, studied here, and have now settled here post uni. I have lived in more rural areas, out of town suburbs, studentville, and even dabbled in some almost city living. It's one of those cities that has been experiencing a boom over the last twenty or so years, overtaking the other cities of West Yorkshire to become the largest, and arguably most successful. Traditionally it really began to develop as a municipality from the beginnings of the industrial revolution, being at the centre of the woollen industry, and has a long history with textiles. Just look at how Marks and Spencer began!
Nowadays, it has hard to class Leeds as one thing in particular - different areas all function as independent towns whilst being part of the larger Leeds - and with most cities has it's share of division. It's not...

Leeds United?
Advantages: lively place to be
Disadvantages: long way from home for some
...My daughter is currently at Leeds University.
It always has had a good reputation and it is didappointing to see them down the scale in the Times newspaper annual listing. However, I cannot bellieve they will sit on their laurels and will do what is needed to regain their place in the top ten.
What I do have to say about Leeds is the impression I get from her and it has nothing to do with the academic side. If you are a student and want good companionship, Reasonable accommodation, stacks of things to do both inside and out of university, during the day and night, this must be one of your hot favourites. Leeds has a feelgood factor and it is a surprisingly friendly place and quite cosmopolitan. I do not think any student would be disappointed there and its also bearable for parents....

When is Leeds found in Kent?
Advantages: A truly lovely castle
Disadvantages: Pricey entrance fee for one visit
...Leeds Castle
Leeds Castle is not in Leeds, which may come as a surprise to some people, but is near Maidstone in Kent. It is known as Leeds castle because way back in Saxon times it was The Manor house of Esledes which became a fortified castle in about 1119. The name Esledes became shortened in speech to Ledes which in turn became Leeds. This castle has had a long and interesting history from this time forward.
How to get there:
By road: Junction 8 of the M20 between London and the Channel ports.
Combined coach and castle entrance tickets with National express www.nationalexpress.com
By rail: Trains daily from London Victoria to Bearsted Station. Then a coach shuttle service operates by Spot Hire from Bearsted Station. £5 return trip adults and £3 for children. See www.spothire.co.uk
A Potted History:
In Tudor times Henry VIII...

The Leeds side streets that you slip down...
Advantages: Excellent university, everyting you'll ever need!!
Disadvantages: Obviously any big city has a high crime rate, so be careful!!! Also, the large campus can be off-putting at first.
...Okay, I'm here now and I should expand on my enthusiastic but extremely vague opinion!!!
The University of Leeds is one of the biggest and most popular in the country, with lots of students!! (I don't know the exact number but I know the total number of students in the city, from the University and the Metropolitan University, and other smaller higher education colleges goes well into the tens of thousands, so that's a lot of students!!), and after only a few weeks here (I'm coming up to the end of week 7, so including freshers' week that makes it nearly 8 weeks) I can see why. Academically, the University has a lot going for it. I'm studying history, so from an Arts perspective there are two big main libraries, with what seems like squillions of books, so it's certainly well-equipped, the tutors and lecturers are all extremely...

Jurys inn - Cheap hotel in Leeds
Advantages: Cheap, presentable hotel, good location
Disadvantages: Soulless, very noisy from outside
...Jurys Inn, Leeds is a reasonably priced hotel that is a 10 minute walk both from the train station and shopping centre of Leeds. We stayed here one weekend in August 09 and it cost us £60 per night for a room with a double bed and a sofa bed (though it would have been squashed with 3 of us).
We found the hotel clean and presentable, with reasonable facilities, but very soulless. The staff were polite, although reserved rather than warm. It is part of a chain of hotels, and I got the impression that probably every other hotel in this chain is exactly like this one.
Checkout was at 12, though you could extend this (at a price). The facilities in the room were fairly standard for a budget hotel chain - there was a fair selection of tea and coffee, a desk with internet connection point, a television with more channels than we could hope to...
