Hot on the heels of my recent review on Onions I have decided to review another member of the Onion family in detail, this time it is turn of the Leek. Leeks are surprisingly easy to grow and have a similar but milder taste than the Onion yet they are nowhere near as popular as the Onion. THE BACKGROUND Leeks are thought to originate from the Mediterranean region of Europe and Central/South West Asia. They have been cultivated for at least 3000 years. In fact Leeks are even mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Numbers as being one of the things that was missed after the Children of the Israelites left Egypt. All cultivated Leeks originate from Wild Leeks, which are often called Ramps. These are a lot smaller than cultivated Leeks and more closely resemble Shallots...

Went to my dads yesterday and looking round his green house I spotted his leeks just tiny waiting to grow some before planting I have some leek seeds at home so thought I ought to sew them else it will be to late in the season. I shall sow them in potting compost in trays in the greenhouse and then when they are big enough to handle plant them in the garden to make those lovely long white oniony stems I have saved some toilet rolls I shall put these over the stems to blanch the stems cuts out the light. I shall earth up around the tube. These leeks take a long time to grow and mature I will not be eating them till September October time Leek seeds can be bought from about £1 a pkt or you can buy the plants from garden centres. Welsh Lasagne anyone?

Advantages: Tasty and nutritious
Disadvantages: can smell them all the way home from the shops!

...For those of you have read my previous 2 reviews -as I promised, this next posting includes my recipe for Leek and Mushroom Lasagne, with an adaptation for a Seafood Lasagne(which also contains leeks). They both contain substantial amounts of leeks, they are both divine, creamy and dreamy, even if not exactly slimming, and they do take a little time to prepare. They are also rather more expensive to make than I had planned for this series of recipes but what the heck?..they are great for entertaining and can be frozen before cooking, so can be prepared well in advance. Leek and potato Soup

...Leak and Potato Soup I love a good soup and it is about the only way to get fresh vegetables into my, (very manly), Fiancé. This is so easy to make and tastes great. It isn't as good as a starter as the potatoes make it really filling. Would you get a soup promising a hug in a bowl?

...Outside, the wind is howling, the snow is falling, so I figure what nicer than to have a nourishing bowl of soup? The Baxter's potato and leek soup was on special offer at my local supermarket for three tins for a £2.00, but its usual price was 89p per 415g tin. Since the local supermarket has very few dairy free tins of soup and this is dairy free, it was pretty much a given that I'd get this one eventually. The branding struck me as particularly bizarre - it offers a "hug in a bowl" - I'm not sure why on earth I'd want a hug from a piping hot bowl of soup, that sounds likely to scald. The tin has a ring pull make it easy and convenient to open, although I found that pulling it open was best done above a pan because it slopped everywhere. ...Whilst picking up a few household products in £ Stretcher yesterday I noticed these Baxters soups priced at 50p per tin and with my love of soup at the moment I grabbed a few from the available flavours. The whole content of the 415g tin contains 186 calories and 1.7g of fat, making this a really low fat, filling, warming snack or small meal. I heated my soup in the microwave for 3 minutes, although this can be heated in a saucepan on the hob until it is piping hot. The soup looks and smells delicious and mouth watering. There are clearly visible chunks of potato, shreds of leek and small pieces of carrot and onion. Unfortunately, the soup was a little watery and could have done with thickening a bit more.
