Leica S1

Advantages: from Studio direkt to CMYK, superior image quality
Disadvantages: thetered camera, needs continuous light

...This is Leica´s very first selfmade digital camera. With the LEICA S 1 Pro, Leica Camera, Solms, has managed to further increase the imaging quality and productivity of the digital studio camera. This increase in performance is achieved with a remarkable sensor which results in a maximum data quality at a high signal to noise ratio. This has a4-fold increase in light sensitivity, meaning that even critical photographic situations at low levels of illumination can be handled more effectively. The photographer can use the modeling light of his or her existing studio flash equipment for taking the shots, for instance. The new sensor - including Binning and Anti-flicker - provides a 14 Bit signal for red, green and blue colours which is processed in a 16 bit data path. This results in clean colours without noise or blooming. All...

Review of Leica Digilux 1

Advantages: fast operation
Disadvantages: no info in viewfinder, bad CCD quality, operating time

...-pros or pros. The SD memory cards are nice, as they are about the size of postage stamp and are fast on transfer to the computer. Fact is that it does not produce very good quality colour (though works quite well at the 1600x1200 JPEG setting - which is what I and many others suspect that the CCD is, using badly-written in-camera firmware which interpolates the file to around 2000x1600 pixels). However, depending on the light, this setting (1600x1200 pixels) can also produce a lot of noise - especially if you under-expose the picture. It generally functions better for black and white photography, as you benefit from the unobtrusive design of the Leica M series. However, the file is small - about 5MB as a TIFF - and this is not really enough info for a fractal interpolation program to do a successful upsize. If you do have to use...

LEICA 8x32 BN BINOCULARS - SEEING IS BELIEVING

Advantages: Superb optical quality,light,well built.
Disadvantages: Price may put people off.

...' refers to the special eyepieces that enable comfortable, full-field viewing, whether or not the user is wearing spectacles; the 'N' stands for exceptional near viewing. And some stats for those technos out there. • Magnification : 8x • Front lens diameter : 32mm • Exit pupil : 4mm • Field of view : 130m @ 1000m • Near focus : 2.2m (approx.) • Dimensions : 112 x 117 x 45mm • Weight : 625g Happy birding!...

Review of Leica 8 X 32 BN

Leica lens, equals great quality.

Advantages: The lens is superb
Disadvantages: None as yet

...Ive not long owned this camera. It is best described as a cross between a digital compact and a digital slr. I say this because you have more control over the camera than you would with a point and shoot compact. It is only 4MB but produces images as good if not better than a camera with greater pixels. You can either use the autofocus or manually focus. It is an easy camera to use and a nice feature is the fact that it has both a viewfinder and also a screen to view the images on. It is alot lighter than it looks and is available in both black and silver models, I have the black one and i personally think it looks better in that colour. It appeals to the passionate photographer as it has a leica lens therefore great image capture. The 12x optical zoom is great but ive not tried the digital zoom as yet. It has captured great photos...

If you always wanted the best...you've got it

Advantages: Legendary quality, solid construction, easy to use, manual overrides, surprisingly versatile.
Disadvantages: Not light for a compact, bulky for a camera not having a zoom, top shutter speed too slow (see review)

...I was introduced to Leica over twenty years ago when I saw an advert in 'Amateur Photographer' Magazine for the R4 SLR camera. The thing that stuck in my mind was the expense-almost £1000 for a very average looking camera, what could justify that? Well I was very new to photography back in those days and asking around led me in two different directions. One was saying that Leica are the best money can buy and others said that Nikon etc are as good and cost less. To cut a very long story short, I was employed in the photgraphic trade and was not so enthusiasic about Leica, that was until I saw a slide show presented by Wolverhampton Photographic Society. This was set in the Alps and the effect was staggering. Razor sharp pictures of stunning clarity and neutral colour balance (the snow stayed white!) of a standard which amazed me...

Don't let the unknown make put you off

Advantages: Nice sharp image, good field of view, duarable
Disadvantages: Slightly heavy, unknown make

...These binoculars are made by DPS, quite an unknown make in the UK and Europe. For once though, this doesn?t mean that the binoculars are lower quality, as one may expect. These binoculars, which I purchased for longer distances, as they have a nice 10X Magnification and a wide 50mm Field of View, have and still do serve me well for long distances and field work. The binoculars provide a good magnification and field of view for the price, and provide a nice sharp and bright picture. This is especially good for longer distances were detail is very helpful, or at low light, were a bright picture is needed. Coming back to the quality, it is of a very high standard and well made. These binoculars will last for quite a long time; although after a few bumps they show ever so slightly signs of weakness. This is to be expected though, and I am...

Review of 10x50 DPS R (Porro Prism)

Compact cutie

Advantages: Small, compact and so easy to use
Disadvantages: None

...I have personally never been one for 'sexy' gadgets. To me a camera is a camera and it either works well or it doesn't. That was until I purchased a Leica C-Lux 2. In my opinion this is one sexy little camera. It is slim and light, so light you forget it's even in your pocket. The picture quality really surprised me, I was expecting the pictures to be ok, but what came out was amazing. It is so easy to use, very user friendly and the instruction manual was simple enough for even the non-techiest of people to use. The battey life is very long and the camera holds a lot more pictures than you would think. The price of these little babies varies immensley, I think you can pick them up at around £175 these days, however I bought mine at around £350 2 years ago. I have read previously that people say this is just a Leica branded Panasonic...

The best Binoculars?

Advantages: Awesome build quality, easy to handhold, very high overall sharpness of image, neutral colour balance of image
Disadvantages: Close focus disappointing, some colour fringing in extreme contrast situations

...Having owned a pair of Leitz 10 x 40 BA/N Binoculars and sold them I had always wanted to own a pair of the newer style Trinovids. The catalogue issued by Leica waxed lyrical about the numerous improvements which had been made over the previous Leitz models. Obviously the first thing noticed was the improved shape and ergonomics, easy to handhold and focus. Now I'm comparing two different types of binocular as I'd previous owned a pair of 10x40 as opposed to the 8x50's. The main reason for a change was the ability to hold the 8x more steady than the 10x-but that is really the only comparison I have. Now the business side of things-the optical performance. Leica had clamed big things for it's new range of Binoculars involving new glasses and lens coating and also something called Phase-Correction coating of the prisms. Did it...

Clone of the Fuji MX1700

Advantages: Very good all round package
Disadvantages: Cheaper to buy the Fuji MX 1700

...This is a complete clone of the Fuji MX1700 it has all the same buttons and the same accessories except the case. Its a very good 1.5 mega pixel camera with easy to use comprehensive features, It comes with everything you need accept a case which Leica charge extra for. I do not think you can buy this new any more but as a second it would be agood buy. The Leica is supplied with PhotoShop 5 LE which makes it nice to have just for that. The camera uses Smart Media 8MB which is upgradable if need be. Its macro is very good too with a shooting distance of 10cm. This is the same as the Fuji 1700 so read my review of that and this camera has all those qualities but you will need to buy that case....

Good Starter Projector

Advantages: Low price, high-quality lens
Disadvantages: wired remote

...When Amateur Photographer provided a free roll of Kodak Elite Chrome ExtraColour slide film last year, I decided to make the leap into slide photography. I shot the roll quickly and bought a small slide viewer to see the pictures. I was so impressed with the quality of slide film that I had to see them projected. So, I went looking for a basic starter projector. What I found was the Leica P150. The P150 was reasonably priced and I did want to buy anything too fancy to start. The P150 comes with an 85mm lens which is perfect for home viewing. The P150 also comes with a wired remote to change slides. My issues with the P150 revolve around usability. I don't have a slide projector stand, so I typically have to angle the projector upward to project onto the screen. This is fine once the slide magazine is loaded. However, it...
