LEIPZIG - AN ALTERNATIVE CITY BREAK

Advantages: Cheap and easy to get there
Disadvantages: Limited flights and times

...Leipzig is found in the Saxony region of East Germany and was in the former GDR. Since the wall came down Leipzig has lost about 200,000 inhabitants, leaving about 400,000, and has also undergone considerable regeneration. 2006 sees the city host some of the early stage World Cup matches at their large sports stadium. Although none of the England games will be played there, the World Cup puts Leipzig firmly on the world football map. Since Air Berlin (www.airberlin.com) started flying direct to Leipzig on a daily basis, getting there couldn't be easier, not to mention cheaper. Direct flights are also available from Lufthansa and BMi but are far more expensive. The only drawbacks with Air Berlin are flying from Stanstead and the return flight time. Flights leave Stanstead at around 8.00pm but the return flights are 6.00am...

Another trip to Germany and another hotel!

Advantages: Well located, polite staff
Disadvantages: Strange route to getting to the sauna!

...So, another year passes and another trip to Germany's Christmas Markets now firmly in the past, it's time to report back! A little bit about Leipzig Forming part of the Former East Germany, Leipzig is a city of transformation. Although 500 years old, the biggest changes seem to have been happening in the past 15 years. It has seen a lot of the architecture associated with communism removed, while much of it's heritage is refurbished and transformed. There are still elements of communism and those times remaining, strangely one of the sites is opposite to the Marriott hotel! But, as it is currently in the stages of refurbishment, you will have to be quick to catch it! Advantages: lots to do, historical interest, easy to get around, cheap
Disadvantages: better to know the language, not for families

...Many people are still put off East German destinations, remembering tales of communism and the Cold War. Unfortunately, people are missing out because of this. To me, it’s the very nature of the East German past that makes Leipzig a fascinating destination. It also makes it a cheap one as prices in the East are still lower than in the West. Visitors keen to discover the history would do well to have a good working knowledge of the German language. There are many museums dedicated to this period of history, the most notable being the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum on the Grimmaische Strasse covering the entire period of 1945 to 1990 as well as temporary exhibitions on specific topics. A handy alternative

Advantages: Very small - no queues or waiting around
Disadvantages: Very small - few facilities and still not many flights!

...Over the last year, Ryanair has expanded its network of budget destinations across Europe, particularly in Germany. Previously, Frankfurt-Hahn was the only destination in this country, but now you have a wider choice, especially in what used to be East Germany, as Berlin Schönefeld, Erfurt and now Altenburg have been added to the routes available. Altenburg is in fact listed on the Ryanair website as Leipzig-Altenburg and (somewhat surprisingly, given that Hahn is miles from Frankfurt) it is not too far from the city it is advertised as serving! Leipzig is about 20 miles to the north, while destinations such as Chemnitz and Dresden are also not a massive distance away. The transport connections are good too ? Altenburg itself lies within a sort of motorway triangle, as the main north-south (Nuremberg-Leipzig-Berlin) and east...

Advantages: cheapish, intriguing, some amazing buildings
Disadvantages: it's still a bit grim

...Leipzig wil not be everyone's cup of tea as far as a holiday destination goes. It shows it's industrial past, and is still very much under reconstruction. But if you could fit it into a tour of Germany on a day visit, then you'll find a prime example of how the former East is being restored following the collapse of Communism at the turn of the 90's; one of the main reasons for me going there as a postgraduate housing student. Leipzig is gradually being turned into a centre for conferences, and consequently the city has a pristine new airport much underused at the moment. Transfer into the city itself is a half hour bus ride, taking you through some of the rather bleak, flat landscape to the city itself. Formerly housing over 700,000 people, Leipzig is now home to just 400,000, and the depopulation shows. Houses stand in disrepair...

An Eck of a Corner

Advantages: An impressive sight, easy to get to, free

...The Deutsches Eck is probably Koblenz?s most celebrated attraction. It?s the headland where the rivers Rhine and Moselle meet, right in the heart of the city and the name Deutsches Eck translates literally as "German corner". Now, while it is certainly quite impressive to see these two mighty rivers become one, it?s not the only reason that this spot is worth visiting. Towering over the headland, perched on an enormous plinth, there is a statue of Emperor Wilhelm I which was designed by Bruno Schmitz (who was also responsible for the war memorial in Leipzig). The statue was erected to commemorate the part he played in the struggle for German union. Advantages: rich gameplay combined with new maps and vehicles
