...I am sure very few people will have heard of this place let alone have been to it. Those amongst us who are fans of the game of football may have come across the name from previous encounters with Arsenal and from the Fifa 2002 World Cup. However, not only is it famed for its football club but it provides the region with numerous activities for those passionate Frenchmen who have grown up here. To me Lens is a town from which my background is held in part. My mother was born in its vicinity and it remains the home of my grandparents; thus it holds a magic which is close to my heart. I have no doubt left you dear reader wondering where this review is heading, well... it is about time that we got on with the show... Advantages: Lightweight

...This is a good quality lens that offers good value for money. It's a great lens for any canon enthusiast and incorporates plenty of features that I would highly recommend. This really is a wonderful piece of kit that should go well with many accessories because it really looks good. After using this product for a few months I have not so far come up against any reliability issues but only time will tell. I therefore would recommend the product. Cheap lens = cheap photos!

Advantages: Worst lens for a professional but good to start out with; cheap; easy to learn with;

...Must make this clear that it is the older version of 18-55mm before they upgraded it to fit the 450D and above. So 400D and below. When starting out in photography; most people get entry level camera body like 400D Canon EOS, this lens comes with the body to form the basic kit lens. As far as I know, you cannot purchase this lens officially with its boxes and such, you can buy one off Ebay for a reduced price of £50 or so without its boxes. Before purchasing the entire kit, you will have to realise that the lens will have to be replaced very soon as it does not perform as well as its counterparts such as Canon 24-105mm for example. Nearly one 'L' of a lens

Advantages: Useful range. Fast f/2.8 aperture. Great IS. Superb image quality.

...Having owned and used a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM zoom lens for around 15 months, I feel that I have some well balanced experience with it. Being an EF-S lens (the 'S' standing for 'Short' back-focus), it is designed for use ONLY with cameras having APS-C size sensors. Do not attempt to use one on a full-frame DSLR or 35mm SLR camera. Firstly, such lenses have a reduced image circle which will produce severe vignetting on large sensor cameras and secondly, the mount of the rear lens element could be struck by the camera's mirror, causing serious damage. Kitsch Kit Lens

Advantages: Keeps the dust off the sensor!
Disadvantages: Poor quality. Poor build quality, Poor performance.

...I have both purchased and won several entry level Canon DSLR's, each of which have been furnished with this 'kit' lens. It is quite obviously the result of cost-cutting exercises at Canon in an effort to keep a headline grabbing low prices for the camera/lens combinations as advertised in the photographic press and at point of sale. This is very evident in the build quality of the lens. It is really quite poor. Very plasticy, extremely light (too light in my opinion) and somewhat 'sloppy' in it's fit and finish. Certainly NOT a lens to fill the purchaser with pride and even less so, confidence. This is born out by results. Great 2nd Lens

Advantages: Fast Focus, well built, reliable excellent performance all round
Disadvantages: Heavy, you will need a tripod

...As you may be gathering, I have been investing in camera stuff recently... This is the 2nd lens I bought for my camera which is excellent. It takes very good and sharp pictures all the way through and is not prone to glare, possibly due to the very large hood it comes with! The operation of the lens is very simple and fits on both the Sony a-mount as well as the Konica Minolta mount. Zooming is done through a large in the middle and if you are focusing manually it is through a front ring. Again there is no distance indicator for the focus ring but that is only useful for nerds as you will not be able to focus and measure distance at the same time unless you want to get a tape out to check! The longest zoom is at 300mm. Now bear in mind that digital SLR cameras have a "crop" factor in the majority of cases and the Sony a-100 has...

Cinderella of the lens world!

Advantages: Compact. Light. Versatile. Good image quality at medium apertures.
Disadvantages: Small maximum aperture. Noisy/harsh AF. Slightly limited zoom range.

...This is a much underestimated little lens which, is really quite a shame for, it has qualities and virtues many others do not. It is extremely small, light and compact, making it an ideal 'walkabout' lens. Great to attach to your camera on a day out when you're not going out specifically on a photographic jaunt but 'might' still want to take serious photographs. The lens doesn't lend itself well to any sort of low-light photography. It has a relatively small maximum aperture of f/3.5 at the wide end and only f/5.6 at the tele end. Furthermore, it has no image stabilisation. You need to be using this lens either on a reasonably bright day, outside or, on a tripod or, at higher ISO settings. However, to counteract this, performance can be really very good indeed if used thoughtfully. Although performance isn't great at maximum...
