When a young woman returns from holiday to find her elderly neighbour dead, she immediately alerts the police. By the time of this 1972 solo release, Leon Russell had already worn an impressive collection of hats, including those of studio sideman for Phil Spector (and a host of others), freelance arranger-producer, and founder of his own record label and studio. Working with artists ranging from Herb Alpert and the Byrds to Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison, Russell developed an almost chameleon-like approach to his solo work, infusing it with a playful variety of viewpoints, personas, and a mastery of several distinctly American musical idioms such as blues, jazz, Tin Pan Alley, and zydeco. ...I've stayed at the Hotel Avalon twice, once back in 2008 when it was pretty much exactly the same but was named Hôtel de Londres et d'Anvers, and the second time in July of this year. This review is mainly based upon a three night stay in July 2012.
The hotel is placed in a traditional Paris tenement building, very close to Gare du Nord, with the metal balconies on the sides that...
