LG GSA H42N Super-Multi Review

Advantages: Very Cheap, Changeable cover panels, Fast Speed
Disadvantages: No firmware, Region Locked, Major issues with burning regular cd's

... Introduction As with most drives they do not last long, thus when it was time to give up the old one i went shopping for a new one. I came across this one which was extremely cheap and thus bought it as LG has become more reputable. The Pros This drive was very easy to install. It was practically a plug and play drive. It also came with different front panels in order to change colors from black and white. Although this may seem pointless it is a factor to take into consideration if you are after certain specification like color for your computer. The drive has never had a problem playing any cd's DVD's and etc. It is also very quiet unlike many drives out there. LG dual layer DVD writer... not really great

Advantages: fast in writing discs, dual layer, ok looking
Disadvantages: long access time, noisy at the start-up

...it for too long, the drive stops reading the disc of course and when you press "play" you have to wait again 5-10 secs. I can't remember exactly how long but way too long. There is also to consider the rumor surrounding the LG brand about the fatal incompatibility with Linux operative systems which causes permanent damage to the drive. I can't tell you if that's true or not as I use XP but I've heard this story quite often so if you have a Linux system you might want to investigate a bit deeper. Luckly for me, most of my computer activities these days go only through usb/flash drives so that I don't use the CD/DVD reader too often and neither I write too many of them. I personally have experienced plenty of brands and this LG has to go in the bad list, althoug nothing as bad as Philips (n°1 worst brand). A FEW TECHNICAL INFO...

Advantages: Supports most disk formats, fast, cheap

Advantages: PERFORMES WELL LIKE OTHERS.

Review of LG GGW H20L Super Multi Blue

The disc, the disc, the disc is on fire.........

Advantages: Has the light scribe facility, cheap, reliable - Great value for money
Disadvantages: Not pleasing to the eye, fairly large and bulky, loud during the burning process

...point out that this burner will burn CDRs and DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs, so if you are requiring an external disc burner then I cannot recommend the LG highly enough. I appreciate it is not the smallest drive on the market, nor it is the quietest or even the quickest but it does exactly what it says on the tin, i.e. burn DVDs, and it does it very well. Being cheap and robust the LG is fantastic value for money, especially since it is better quality than many other hard drives that are at least double the price of this. The dual layer and light scribe features make this drive such a fantastic purchase since these are two features that are often found on burning drives that are much more expensive....

...I've reviewed the excellent LG GSA 4120B DVD-writer, and having owned it for 1.5 years, i got a new computer and needed some DVD-writers, so Sept 2005, i bought two of these, thats how much i trusted the quality of LG Super Multi Write Technology, and i haven't been let down. The only difference between the these and the slightly newer GSA 4167B is that these can only write to DVD+R dual layer, whereas the 4167B can write to both DVD+R dual layer and DVD-R Dual layer, not a major problem really, especially since dual layer media is quite expensive. The beauty of these machines, apart from their smart black exterior is that they can write to all three formats, DVD-,DVD+ and DVD-Ram. LG 4166B: a good all-round, reliable drive

Advantages: reliable, fast, good quality, not-too-picky, handles all formats
Disadvantages: limited to 8x reading from some formats, missing some 'expert' features eg cannot do disc quality scans or report C2 errors

...I bought my LG 4166B drive because it was reccomended as being reliable and I was anxious to avoid having some of the problems that I'd been having with a Sony dvd-writer. I was also interested in its capacity to deal with all different kinds of media, including DVD-RAM. Many people might think that all DVD-writers are pretty much the same, but unfortunately that is not the case. I've found that drives vary considerably in their ability to burn without serious errors on different varieties of media. Some drives are extremely picky about the media they can burn on and are not compatible with that many discs.
