Tadpole 23 - THE lightweight expedition tent

Advantages: Lightweight, robust, colour coded poles, reflective guy ropes
Disadvantages: It's not true 4-season, small cooking area, lack of headroom

...I bought a Tadpole 23 three years ago and use it for wild-country back-packing, rock-climbing and winter mountaineering. It is an ultra-lightweight tent that weighs less than 2kg, designed for two people, in three-season conditions (However, I have used it for winter mountaineering in the UK, which it is fine for if you have a good sleeping bag and air mattress). It does all the standard tent stuff - like keeping the wind and rain off you and your kit whilst allowing you to cook and sleep, but is much more sophisicated than a standard tent. When you first see it up, it looks a bit flimsy, but it is actually very resistant to the wind and The North Face have made every effort to reduce its weight as much as possible without compromising on the strength. Three Legged Lightweight

It comes in a kind of metallic tarnished champagne finish with black trimmings. This makes a welcome change from the more common aluminium grey or black. It is very much on the light side weighing in at 620g. This is a great advantage if you have to carry it around al lot but sometimes a lighter weight tripod can mean a less sturdy. I didn't find this to be much of a problem as far as using an SLR camera is concerned, although in truth it did feel a little flimsy when the legs and central column were fully extended. ...impressed. The unit itself is neat and lightweight which is important to me as I don't like lugging heavy tools around. Working on a fence today it fitted well into the pocket on the front of my sweatshirt even though it did drag it down a bit! It fits neatly into the palm of my hand and is intuitive to use. The instructions were straighforward and very easy to follow. As I said earlier it took around 5 hours to reach fully charged the first time I used it which wasn't a problem for me but that was rather longer than the instructions led me to expect. In use I found it quite good although I do worry about how robust it would be for a serious workman. It is great to someone doing a little DIY who wants something to make the job easier.
