Review of Suzuki Liana 1.6 Hatchback

What a song and dance!

Advantages: lovely family film
Disadvantages: none

...I love the old Hollywood musicals and none more so than Singin' in the Rain starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. This lovely film has got it all - romance, comedy and lots of great singing and dancing along with a couple of downpours for good measure! I recently received the DVD of this film for my birthday and the other day we all sat down as a family to watch this great film. Even my four year old daughter really enjoyed it! Singin' in the Rain (made in 1952) steps back in time to the advent of 'talking films. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) are big silent movie stars. However, when the movie production company starts to make talking pictures there is a big problem because it soon transpires that Lina's voice is terrible. No one knows what to do about this until Don meets the beautiful Cathy...

Advantages: A fun, well told family adventure

Similarly unexplained was the relationship between the two young leads - they seem to rub along quite nicely together, giving the impression they've known each other for years, but later in the film it turns out Doon doesn't know how Lina's father died, despite it being not long ago, and Lina doesn't know Doon's dad. So, maybe they haven't known each other that long - it's all very baffling . I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the huge mole has to do with anything - the huge mole is never explained, and I spent half the film trying to figure out if the people were little 'Borrower' sized people, or if it really was just a humongous mole . If moles and beetles evolved to be so much bigger in a few hundred years, then why ? And how ? So far, it seems I'm only mentioning the bad bits of the film - I will say that some parts of the film were...

Lina whose voice is terrible seems to be an insurmountable obstacle and this in spite of her lessons of diction, which are hilarious. Embers of an Idea

Advantages: A good central concept and some nice ideas that will entertain the kids.
Disadvantages: The budgetary constraints are clear.

...The underground city of Ember was built after a global catastrophe in order to save the human race. It was only meant to last two hundred years - but two hundred and forty-one years later it is grinding to a halt as the infrastructure breaks down. The massive generator that produces all the heat and light is falling apart and the blackouts are getting more frequent and lasting longer. Food is in short supply and when the generator dies, the city dies with it. The only hope may be teenagers Doon and Lina who find a mysterious map that may lead to the surface and a new start.
