...Whenever we try to go away somewhere for a 'cheap' break we always check out the travel lodges and Holiday Inn's first to see what offers they have because we like the fact that you always know what you're getting with them. You know they're not going to be fancy with special additions like in other hotels but you know that they will be of a certain standard and will at least be clean. Mrs B and I decided we would try the Travel Lodge outside of Lincoln. We were going back to our old haunt Lincoln to celebrate another of our anniversaries and remember the place we met but since Baby B had arrived we had a little bit less money to splash out on somewhere more exotic. Advantages: Exhaustive history of mid-nineteenth century American politics
Disadvantages: Mainly for the specialist and dedicated enthusiast

...This hefty tome (over 900 pages, if you include the appendices, index, etc.) the cover tells us, is 'the book that inspired Barack Obama'. For what it's worth, Obama's name appears no less than nine times on the cover and spine, while Lincoln's appears only six, and that of the author a mere two. If I was the author, I might be a little miffed. However, having got that out of the way, this is probably as full an account of American politics during the American Civil War and the years which led up to it as you will find anywhere today. Advantages: A lot of history, very informative tour, Value for money.
Disadvantages: A touch Inaccessible. Outdoors.

...Lincoln Castle is situated in the Cathedral Quarter of Lincoln atop Steep Hill which leads into central Lincoln and beyond. Originally a Roman settlement it was acquired by William the Conqueror (who commissioned the building of the nearby Cathedral) due to its strategic importance in Lindum (now known as Lincoln) an important market town. It is not particularly easy to get to, in that if you are visiting Lincoln town centre, you have limited options to get there. You have a 20 minute walk up a VERY Steep Hill (do not underestimate it's name "Steep Hill") and down again, or a drive to find a space in limited local car parks or waiting for the free shuttle bus, where disabled visitors tend to take priority. ...Lincoln Castle is situated in the heart of Historic Lincoln close to the mighty Cathedral in the Bailgate area of the city. The castle was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror (not single-handedly I assume!) , when Lincoln was one of the most important towns in England. The site itself had been occupied since Roman times and according to the Domesday Book 166 homes were destroyed to make way for the castle. Now it is one of Lincolnshire's most popular attractions and it is not difficult to see why. ...On a recent trip to the States I stopped in Washington DC for a day on the way home. We wanted to pack in as much as possible. As it is literally a stones throw from the fantastic Lincoln Castle, it is possible to do both attractions and visit some of Lincoln's shops and bars on a day trip. Lincoln Cathedral was, amazingly, the world's tallest building for a period of 250 years until 1549. Entry to the Cathedral costs £4 with £3 concessions available for people on benefits and children age 5-16 pay only £1. Annual passes are also available for those who live locally, for an affordable £15. White Hart Hotel in Lincoln

Advantages: Close to Historical Landmarks, Friendly Staff, Good Rooms, Stylish
Disadvantages: Expensive Breakfast, Some parts need Refurbishment

...pass through, Lincoln doesn't feel touristy at all but I may simply be saying this as I am not visiting in-season and the city isn't exactly teeming with life at the moment. Just outside reception is the typical leaflet shelf with various attractions and there seems to be a few things to do in Lincoln. Just outside my room is a fantastic view of the cathedral which I will be putting up a picture of when I get back. There's also the Lincoln Castle as well as an exhibition which will take you to look at the Magna Carta (only 4 in the UK). It's quite a historic town with predominantly older, but beautiful buildings which fit in very well. The cathedral is awe-inspiring, as well as the castle. It's a great place to take a few pictures but it looks tremendous at night. Within walking distance is a street of shops, but to reach it you must...

...My god this album is a real find! It's a wonder I ever lived without Abbey in my life before this album came along. Growing up as a fan of brilliant Female Black vocalists like Billy Holliday, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Mary J...it amazes me that I never once heard of Abbey Lincoln. Her voice is smooth and soulfull and really does make you feel at ease. A certain depth and warmth to her voice that make you trust in what she says inately and in that you begin to realise the wisdom of her years.
