Not Lincoln's lovliest!
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...Whenever we try to go away somewhere for a 'cheap' break we always check out the travel lodges and Holiday Inn's first to see what offers they have because we like the fact that you always know what you're getting with them. You know they're not going to be fancy with special additions like in other hotels but you know that they will be of a certain standard and will at least be clean.
Mrs B and I decided we would try the Travel Lodge outside of Lincoln. We were going back to our old haunt Lincoln to celebrate another of our anniversaries and remember the place we met but since Baby B had arrived we had a little bit less money to splash out on somewhere more exotic.
Location
This travel lodge is not central to Lincoln. It isn't even a walk away. It is 5 miles south of Lincoln centre on the a46 which is a very busy road...

Lincoln's Constitution?
Advantages: Affordable day out, Steeped in History
Disadvantages: None
...Lincoln Castle is situated in the heart of Historic Lincoln close to the mighty Cathedral in the Bailgate area of the city. The castle was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror (not single-handedly I assume!) , when Lincoln was one of the most important towns in England. The site itself had been occupied since Roman times and according to the Domesday Book 166 homes were destroyed to make way for the castle. Now it is one of Lincolnshire's most popular attractions and it is not difficult to see why.
Castle entry is an affordable £3.80 for Adults with concessions and family tickets available for less than £10 for a family of five, making this a very affordable day out.
Lincoln Castle is a Motte and Bailey construction and is one of only two Castles in the country with two Mottes. The magnificent castle walls and neatly lawned...

Lincoln Cathedral is in Font of you.
Advantages: Beautiful Historic building
Disadvantages: At the top of a steep hill
...~~ Lincoln Cathedral ~~
Visiting Lincoln Cathedral was one of the main reasons for this years holiday in Lincolnshire, when I was about 10 yrs of age in Junior School we did a project on Lincoln and one on architecture, tying the two projects together with Lincoln's historic buildings. I was so impressed with Lincoln Cathedral I have always wanted to come back for another visit. My hubby made my year by suggesting Lincolnshire for our holiday and he took me around loads of beautiful historic buildings, I was one very lucky lady.
~~ History ~~
The first Cathedral was initially a lot smaller than the magnificent building you see today, work started in 1072, it was a Norman Cathedral denoted by the Norman (rounded) arches and it was also built in the shape of a cross.
There are three architectural features that have stuck in my...

The fortunes of President Lincoln
Advantages: Exhaustive history of mid-nineteenth century American politics
Disadvantages: Mainly for the specialist and dedicated enthusiast
...This hefty tome (over 900 pages, if you include the appendices, index, etc.) the cover tells us, is 'the book that inspired Barack Obama'. For what it's worth, Obama's name appears no less than nine times on the cover and spine, while Lincoln's appears only six, and that of the author a mere two. If I was the author, I might be a little miffed.
However, having got that out of the way, this is probably as full an account of American politics during the American Civil War and the years which led up to it as you will find anywhere today. The story opens at 18 May 1860, which was the day the Republican Party nominated its candidate for president. We then step back in time to the early lives of Abraham Lincoln and his 'rivals', namely New York senator William Seward, Ohio senator Salmon Chase, and Edward Bates, all 'members of a restless...

Lincoln's magnificent Cathedral
Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges
...No visitor to Lincoln can fail to see its Cathedral, which along with Lincoln Castle dominates the town and both of these impressive landmarks can be seen from many miles around.
Construction of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, to give it its full title, began in 1092 although it was not until 1311 that it was completed. At that time it was not only the tallest building in Britain but the tallest building in the world and remained so for the next 200 years. It originally stood 525 feet (160 metres) tall but during the 16th century disaster struck and the main tower collapsed, which was never rebuilt. Today Lincoln's Cathedral stands just a measly 271 feet (83 metres) high. In fact Lincoln Cathedral has seen its fair share of disasters and has also survived an earthquake and a serious fire.

Lincoln Castle
Advantages: A lot of history, very informative tour, Value for money.
Disadvantages: A touch Inaccessible. Outdoors.
...Lincoln Castle is situated in the Cathedral Quarter of Lincoln atop Steep Hill which leads into central Lincoln and beyond. Originally a Roman settlement it was acquired by William the Conqueror (who commissioned the building of the nearby Cathedral) due to its strategic importance in Lindum (now known as Lincoln) an important market town.
It is not particularly easy to get to, in that if you are visiting Lincoln town centre, you have limited options to get there. You have a 20 minute walk up a VERY Steep Hill (do not underestimate it's name "Steep Hill") and down again, or a drive to find a space in limited local car parks or waiting for the free shuttle bus, where disabled visitors tend to take priority.
It isn't as spectacular as some of the other castles open to the public in England and Wales, but it was felled by Oliver...

Well hello Mr Lincoln!
Advantages: Free, interesting, historical
Disadvantages: Not that much to see
...On a recent trip to the States I stopped in Washington DC for a day on the way home. We wanted to pack in as much as possible. I was with my Mum, Dad and aunt and although Mum, Dad and I had all been to Washington before, my aunt hadn't so we wanted to show her all the main tourist sites. I think the Lincoln memorial is one of the iconic symbols of Washington and so was high on our list.
SOME HISTORY:
As a History teacher I always feel I should add a little information here! The Lincoln memorial commemorates Abraham Lincoln (yes the clue was in the title!). Abe (to his friends) was the 16th President of the USA and is famous for many reasons, most notably, getting assassinated! He was also President during the American Civil War, gave the Gettysburg Address and emancipated the American slave population.
The Memorial was...

The Hunt for Lincoln's Imp.
Advantages: Awesome Architecture, Religious Significance, The Da Vinci Code.
Disadvantages: None
...Lincoln Cathedral has dominated the skyline of Lincoln for over 900 years and has survived fire, earthquake and collapsed towers in its lifetime. As it is literally a stones throw from the fantastic Lincoln Castle, it is possible to do both attractions and visit some of Lincoln's shops and bars on a day trip. Lincoln Cathedral was, amazingly, the world's tallest building for a period of 250 years until 1549.
Entry to the Cathedral costs £4 with £3 concessions available for people on benefits and children age 5-16 pay only £1. Annual passes are also available for those who live locally, for an affordable £15.
It might not feel quite right to have to pay to enter a place of worship, but it costs £50,000 per week to keep the Cathedral open for visitors and to maintain it. At least it is a reasonably affordable entry fee that will not...

Belton House and Gardens Lincolnshire
Advantages: Access and enjoyment for all
Disadvantages: Food a little limited and pricey
...'s program and book 'The Moondial'? Belton Gardens is where it was set and also where you will still find the Sundial that was featured.
Although the garden paths are mainly laid to gravel, access for pushchairs and wheelchairs has been made easier by using the grass as the path and wooden ramps put into place where any slope of steps need maneuvering.
Please note that Orangey doe snot have access for wheelchair users.
Adventure Playground
This is my son's favourite part of the visit and sometimes mine also. While the children run off steam it is a chance for you sit back and relax in the woodland surroundings.
The adventure playground is the largest in Lincolnshire and there is something to do for whatever the age of child.
From slides to tree top cabins, from Ariel slides to rope swings.
The play area...

The White Hart, Lincoln
Advantages: Good setting, salubrious interior
Disadvantages: expensive, poor service
...Despite living in Lincoln, I have only the one experience of the White Hart. My cricket club had it's annual presentation dinner there last year.
Location
Set in the beautiful, historic uphill Bailgate area in the city centre, The White Hart is in the shadow of the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. This means it is in the upmarket area of the city, meaning that the prices are higher than if it were elsewhere in the city.
Prices
It has to be said that the prices are high. We paid £27 for the ticket and this included a 3 course meal and nothing else. At the bar before I bought a round of drinks (two pints of lager and a large glass of white) and it came to a shade over £10. This, to me is quite expensive.
Food
The food was not the highest quality - indeed for the price we paid it was distinctly below average. The starter...
