Smooth operator Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) zips around Los Angeles in his chauffeured Lincoln town car, cutting deals and finding clients on the road. Then he lands a doozy: a rich real-estate heir (Ryan Phillippe) accused of the brutal assault of an escort. At first, the case looks like a breeze, but odd details start nagging at Haller until he recognizes an ugly connection to an earlier case--and realizes he's been set up in the strangest way. There are some deep implausibilities in The Lincoln Lawyer, but they hardly matter. This is a movie that cruises on charm and smart casting, from McConaughey as a man whose glib polish is betrayed by a streak of doubt, down to the detectives (solid performances from Bryan Cranston, Michael Paré, Michaela Conlin, and others) and lowlifes (Katherine Moennig as an unlucky hooker, Shea Whigham as a lazy snitch) that flesh out the legal world. Every character pops out, clean and distinct; this sort of web-of-deceit story line, full of twists and turns, depends on the audience clearly connecting all the players. Some moments get overstated or maybe don't make complete sense, but the zippy pace carries the audience over those bumps. The Lincoln Lawyer could easily turn into a television series, a sort of Rockford Files-esque mixture of procedure and puzzle making. Also starring Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, Frances Fisher, John Leguizamo, and Josh Lucas as the prosecuting attorney who gives McConaughey some competition in the chiseled-looks department. --Bret Fetzer ... less

It's always good to welcome a Michael Connelly novel, and The Lincoln Lawyer is a strong addition to the Connelly bookshelf. This stand-alone legal thriller has all the adroit plotting and no-nonsense prose that are Connelly's trademarks, with a particularly strong protagonist. In the hierarchy of American lawyers, Lincoln lawyers are not held in the highest esteem. These are criminal defence attorneys who run their practices from a travelling Lincoln car, traversing the county of Los Angeles to hoover up whatever work is available, however basic. Connelly's tarnished hero is Mickey Heller, who has fine-tuned this less-than-impressive side of the legal profession to such a degree that few can match him: he knows all the ins and outs of the system, including precisely who to slip a back-hander to when appropriate. But Mickey finds a way to move upmarket when he acquires a well-heeled client. A rich young man from Beverly Hills has been arrested for savagely assaulting a woman, and the case falls in Mickey's lap. And though the lawyer is used to defending clients who are guilty as sin, it actually looks (for once) that his client is innocent. But Lincoln lawyers like Mickey are fully aware of the lottery that is their profession, and he isn't too surprised when the case goes pear-shaped. But (to his dismay) Mickey slowly learns that neither his client nor the victim in the case is quite what they seem to be, and soon there's a lot more than a penny-ante case at stake, with Mickey's life quite as much at risk as any reputation he might have. Connelly fans (an ever-growing army) will be pleased to hear that all the customary traits are fully on offer here, with one key component even more finely honed than usual: the gritty, idiomatic dialogue, which is richer and more entertaining than usual. --Barry Forshaw ... less

Lincoln the Dots
Advantages: Slickly written and directed with solid performances.
Disadvantages: It doesn't do anything new.
...Mick Haller is an LA lawyer, who operates his business out of the back of his Lincoln town car. He represents clients many would consider ?scum?, including a bunch of drug-dealing bikers. But his latest case is different; Louis Roulet, the privileged son of a wealthy Beverly Hills estate agent is accused of rape and attempted murder by a prostitute. Roulet claims he?s been set up, but his story...

Advantages: The repercussions of defending baddies and being haunted by honest ones hitting the slammer.
Disadvantages: The glorification of making big bucks by defending scum bags.
..."Michael Connelly's The Lincoln Lawyer"
"There is no client as scary, as an innocent Man" - J. Michael Haller, Criminal Defense Attorney, L.A.1962
The best reason why I enjoyed reading Michael Connelly's The Lincoln Lawyer, is the fact that I was able to get an inside look into the "Lawyer Morality". It is no surprise that to be an attorney, is the ability to be able to produce major...

Lincoln the Dots
Advantages: Phenomenal performances, solid writing and great production values.
Disadvantages: Feels like one long history lesson, which requires further study to appreciate fully.
...In the last four months of his life, Abraham Lincoln steers his country through a turbulent period. As the American Civil War rages on, causing destruction and death on both sides, Lincoln seeks to end slavery by pushing the 13th Amendment through Congress. But he must contend with opposition across the political spectrum.
If ?Lincoln? was a stick of rock, it would have the word ?quality...
