Switch to Netgear
Advantages: Easy to use, easy to install
Disadvantages: closeness of the ports.
...environment.
Perhaps its great feature is its dual network speed capability.
Most modern networks demanding high speed run at 100Mbps (megaytes per second) while older and less demanding networks can cope quite happily at a tenth of this at 10Mbps. Each individual port can set its own speed so you can mix network settings and operations all on one switch without having to worry!
Slower and quicker connections can all work happily.
You can get these from any good PC office retailer or online at DABS.
A great switch with great functionality. One to buy if you want to buy a switch....

Jeeeeeeese thats fast...
Advantages: Better than a hub, Well priced
Disadvantages: Only 5 ports, yet another damn power adapter!
...lights (also tells you the current load (%) on the network), but was just too slow when copying large files from machine to machine (like when I need to install or copy a windows service pack onto a machine (100megs worth!)
Actually, its not that slow, but in this day and age, I want it copied and I WANT IT NOW! So patiance is not one of my more exercised virtues... Along comes the Linksys 5 port switch. Firstly, While wondering through PC World (yes, I know), I started to look and the hubs, hoping a 100BaseT would catch my eye for next to nothing. Well, that didn't happen. There were some nice 3Com hubs, but for a 100BaseT, I was looking at over £100.
Then something caught my eye. It was screaming 200Mbs at me and was only £70. I picked up the box with trembling hands, it was not a hub, it was a switch...I had heard of these, but...

Review of Linksys EtherFast Dual Gigabit with 24-Port 10/100 Switch - switch - 24 ports

I'm still scratching. Hey Watchit.
Advantages: Fast, tiny, attractive, cool, compatible, compliant
Disadvantages: Not enough ports (but then it is a 5 port), a little more expensive than similar units by others
...I?ve been scratching my head for hours, wondering what anyone can say about a piece of equipment that simply works, and I have to admit I?m still scratching. Hey ? watchit!
I can?t think of anything I have ever owned that is more reliable. It does exactly what it is supposed to, which is to act as a conduit through which a collection of computer network enabled devices will work.
The Linksys Etherfast 5 Port Switch has 5 x 10 or 100mbps autosensing RJ45 ports for use in a Category 3 or 5 cabled environment, utilising 10BaseT, or 100BaseTX switched half and/or full duplex, technology in a star network topology. The bus topology, which utilises BNC connectors, is not directly supported. (Note: Cat3 cabling = 10BaseT only.) So if used correctly it is as fast as the technology allows.
I cannot think of a single reason why it...

Neat Netgear 5 port gigabit switch
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, simple to use
Disadvantages: None.
...I liked this switch so much, I bought two of them.
Netgear have a reputation for cheap and reliable networking equipment, and this 5 port unmanaged switch is no exception.
When I bought my two, they were retailing online for approx £35 each - but these days you should be able to get one for approx £25 (inc VAT.)
The switch is more or less the size of my hand (yes, I have big hands). With 5 ports on the back - all are auto-sensing, as is the gigabit standard, so you don't have to worry about crossover cables if you're daisy-chaining switches... The only other port on the back is for power, which is the usual "wall-wart" plug in transformer you get with most home networking equipment.
Given the switch is unmanaged, you can just plug desktop computers, laptops, XBOXes, network printers straight into the switch, and not worry...

Ideal switch for the small business or developers
Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use
Disadvantages: None
...We currently run an 80 user network in our office. While the main traffic of our network is handled by 6, 24 port rack mounted switches, my little IT office has 7 PCs in it with not enough ports on the wall to connect them up.
this poses a problem. To connect to our network, you need a network connection on the Wall. There are 4 connections in our office and 7 machines. Obviously 7 into 4 does not go so a solution was needed.
The answer?
A small desktop based switch that would allow us to connect up to 16 computers to one Network connection on the wall.
The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from...

Switch it !
Advantages: Performace at an excellent price
Disadvantages: 4 ports may not be enough
...to that one port only. To add to this, Switches can support "Full-Duplex" networking, which means sending and receiving data at the same time, effectively doubling your network speed under the right conditions.
>>> So what?
So, that's immensely more efficient, and particularly in a high-traffic environment (even online games played no a LAN qualify here) it can have a perceptible positive impact on performance.
>>> What's the FS-105 then?
This is how you get this wonderful technology into your home! This £69 beauty is half the cost of its competition, will auto-detect 10 and 100Mb/s connections and has 5 ports, one of which can be used as an uplink. Even a good hub will cost £50, and for the larger office, the FS-108 (8 port) version can be bought for only £88 (if you can find one in stock anywhere!)...

Big network small price
Advantages: Reliable, functional and cheap, easy to use
Disadvantages: None
...the cabinet.
Once the headache of putting it in the switch cabinet is out of the way, its plain sailing. However, remember to plug in the mains cable to the rear of the switch BEFORE you bolt it in. Its difficult to reach to the back unless you have a cabinet that opens on all sides or if like us, the back faces a wall!
All of the network sockets and connections are located on the front of this switch so it means no further fiddling around the back once it is installed. Handy if you need to make any networking changes to the configuration.
On the older models (pre last summer) there was a button located on the Right hand side that allowed users to select between Uplink and normal perfomance on the 24th port. This means that the last port can be used for linking to the main server if needed. However, this has all become autmated...
