Linksys, links my systems just great.
Advantages: Cheap, Easy Install, Fast Connection, 4 ports
Disadvantages: Wired. Not always a disadvantage though.
...I decided to write this review today, after helping a friend of mine choose what type of router to go for. Having had only two routers in my lifetime, I'm not the biggest technicality whiz, but I know enough stuff to get me going.
After my first router (A mentor, which by the way, you shouldn't buy) broke, I needed a new. I'd heard a lot of praise about Linksys routers. And the praise was true to it's word.
The router packs the following statistics, which may mean more to some of you that others, but listed her for simplicities sake when you read reviews on it.
Built in Modem. No need for both a router and a modem.
ADSL2. You can connect up to 25 mb per second with this
4 ports. You can connect 4 PC's, Routers or other Ethernet devices to this.
Wired. Means no wireless troubles and better security, but more wires.
As...

stable, reliable router
Advantages: bullet proof, future proof, idiot proof
Disadvantages: too new to be great value for money
...We bought one of these through work to handle our company 2mb ADSL connection.
As with all linksys units this is well made and behaves nicely. the 4 port switch is as fast as it's supposed to be.
The setup is as hard as you want to make it. there are lots and lots of screens that can be used to tune your internet experience down to fine details, it contains URL blocking, IP, MAC and bad word filtering and you can set it to only allow specific computers to access the net - as if the unit wants to be a proxy server when it grows up.
We selected this router specifically because we were looking long term at getting an SDsl connection when it became available and this router is one of very few which will handle that technology (sdsl has the same incoming and out going available bandwidth, rather than adsl which has more incoming...

D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router 4 Port
Advantages: Pick up a bargain ?
Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?
...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay...
The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...
