...Slackware is an operating system based on the Linux kernel. People often refer to Linux as an alternative to Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOSX. But in fact Linux is the kernel on top of which all the 'user space' software runs, and Slackware is just one example of a Linux based OS. There are many, many more. The differences between the various distros, as they are known, largely boil down to how everything is put together. The actual software that they use is the same.
If I've so far blinded you with science, I'm sorry. It's not actually particularly complicated, which is one of the things which using a Linux based OS has taught me. Microsoft Windows, for example, tends to make people feel somewhat at a loss when things don't work. Using Linux, and particularly Slackware, has taught me how things actually work, and consequently I am...

Review of Slackware Linux
...How many people have actually heard of Linux? Or UNIX for that matter? How many people even realise that Windows isn't the only choice of operating system (OS) that your PC can run. Yes, believe it or not people, Windows is not a given, it is only one OS amongst many. It just so happens that Microsoft Windows is the most popular OS, with just about everyone using it. Or at least that's how it would appear to your average punter who walked in to their local PC World store looking for a new PC. There may be people reading this op who know their stuff and are well versed in Linux and various other OS's, but there will be just as many people who don't. Windows is seen by many as what a PC is, just like IE is the browser that 90% of people use.
I'll get in to the good and bad points of Windows in itself later on, but ignoring...

Review of Armed Linux
Advantages: You can be dead clever down the pub Disadvantages: No-one will care much
...Well blow me down with a feather! I'm typing this little missive on a copy of Sun Microsystems' "StarOffice" running on a Linux box that I'm logged on to through a Window on my Windows/ME machine. How cool is that on the geek scale of 10 to freezing? This is seriously clever stuff. Got a spare PC lying around? Wanna have a laugh with something new? You need Linux, that's what you need mate.
Over the past couple of months I've been playing around with Linux in order to gauge for myself whether or not it has the mettle to be a serious competitor to Windows. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the answer is "probably" (yes, - I've been on the "Assertiveness part I" course, but I just can't decide whether to go on part II or not!). Personally, I think Linux is the bee's knees, however I am also acutely aware that it won't be...
Advantages: Fast, Secure, Free, Powerful Disadvantages: Rather daunting to new Users
...Debian GNU/Linux
Firstly welcome to the world of Linux, in particular Debian GNU/Linux. This review/general article discusses the main features of the Debian Distribution, what Linux is, why you should switch, and getting started with your new system. Be warned that this review is quite long, but there's no need to read everything on this article, a quick skimming will give you a good introduction.
So What is Linux -
Technically Speaking, Linux is an Operating System microkernal, Non Technically Speaking Linux is a program of sorts that runs and maintains the hardware, software and devices of your computer and runs the programs on it. In a way, Linux is similar in function to Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac, which you'll likely be running on your computer at the moment.
While a full Operating System like Windows XP comes in...

Review of Debian GNU/Linux
Advantages: very easy to use very simular to windows / MAC Disadvantages: NONE
...Linux is poping up every where these days and it is said that 80% of internet servers are Unix / Linux based. So what is available for me and you the home or new to linux user.
SuSE linux brought to you by Novell is a great home or business linux solution.
it comes pretty complete with almost any piece of software you could need in the box.
i recomend SUSE because of its ease of use and simularity to windows or mac depending which you choose at start up. this can all sound very confusing but is very simple, In linux you have a choice of GUI (graphical user interface - windows) 2 known popular GUIs are GNOME and KDE. gthe GNOME desktop enviorment is very like macs OSx and the KDE desktop environment is very like windows. and you can choose which to use at logon with one click.
the installation process is very simple and if you...
Advantages: More programs, better hardware support and easier setup Disadvantages: Lots of stuff you don't need
...SUSE are renowned for making really good and full distributions of Linux. I've always made a point of buying the professional version (usually around £50) and nothing less. I've been buying it since around SUSE 6.2 and it has always been top of my books.
SUSE bundle everything you could possibly need, and loads of stuff you don't. Quite often you find some funky stickers and maybe a case badge, keyring or pin badge depending on the edition. But to the important stuff!
SUSE produce a serious manual with their products. Few newbies know that everything you could possibly need to know is installed and can be accessed with the MAN command, but this information is usually technical and less user friendly. The manuals make everything less technical, more straight forward and take you step by step for all different kinds of setup...
Advantages: Free, Open Source, Simple installation, user friendly, great device support Disadvantages: Only for beginners really, weird missing packages errors
...Whilst wondering what my first op should be about, I noticed that nobody had reviewed the latest Mandrake release, even though this release is a great improvement on the last one. Mandrake is really only for the Linux beginner, but if you're reading this then you probably fall into that category. The installation is fast, simple and intuitive, to be honest I was blown away by it - Mandrake can be setup however you want it, but without losing it's ease of use. The installer's GUI is equally impressive, and I'd say it's more friendly than a Windows installation.
Moving from Windows to Linux is never easy, and given Microsoft's monopoly it's something most of us have to or have had to do. This is where Mandrake comes in, it's the ideal Linux Beginner distribution - it's based on the popular Red Hat distribution but has support...

Review of Linux Mandrake 9.1
Advantages: Cheap and wide range of additional features Disadvantages: Not for the feint of heart or novice user
...If you want an overview of what generic LINUX is - read on.
There are already some excellent opinions in this category which explain the technical details of Red Hat Linux (RHL) far better than I ever will, instead, what I hope to offer is a compact summary of what Red Hat Linux 8.0 is, why you might consider using it.
Red Hat 8.0 is the latest version of the most widely used distribution of Linux, and not without good reason.
People may argue other flavours of Linux are better in specific circumstances, however RHL is quite easily the most written about, and most books tend to explain things in terms of Red Hat, and then go on to describe the differences in other distributions.

Advantages: UNIX like, clean, stable, works well with kernel in terms of config. Good GUI for X11 and TERM control. Disadvantages: Bad as a server, but we're talking home computing here. Probably not great for first time users...more command line fiddling.
...Having used BSD for years, I progressed to Linux. Having said progressed, I at first regressed through the early Red Hat systems, an example of jewry rigged systems, all put together in a spagetti of configuration files and utilities - ghastly to use!
However, BSD has its own downfalls. Whilst being great as the server, it cannot handle a great deal of the utilities designed for UN*X's - nowadays all designed for Linux -> JED is an example - the programmers editor. The slang libs didn't work correctly under BSD, and when I tried to use GNU-ST with the front end for X11 - well, I was pushing my luck ;)
So, I went to Slackware, having heard it was one of the most UNIX like of the bunch. I love it; I've been using it for about 3 months, it works cleanly, it's stable, and modular kernel programming is not a hard task - it is quite easy...

Review of Slackware Linux
Advantages: Excellent VFM compared to Windows and Office Disadvantages: Some set-up processes not clearly defined
...emulate the (in his opinion) superior UNIX without costing an arm and a leg. In fact, he decided to put the software in the public domain (that means it?s free to you and me!). More significantly, it also means that if you are the writer of a software application, you shouldn?t have too much trouble finding out how to get it to work within this environment because the requisite ?source code? is an open secret.
Thus LINUX was born. So, if it?s free, why does it cost anywhere between £39 and £85 in PC World? Well, as you can imagine, the software industry hasn?t fallen over itself to make versions of their Windows or MacOS software to run on Linux, so when paying for your Linux package, you also get a bundle of software to overcome this, at least partially.
In my own case, my Linux 7.3 version cost me £49 bundled by a company called Red...
