Slackware 12.0 - Linux for today.

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: None really.

...and reliability. It is also known as being a little tricky to begin with, particularly if you are unfamiliar with Linux. This may be true, and I had difficulty at first. Unlike many other distros, Slackware doesn't automatically set everything up for you. It does the basics, but a certain amount of manual configuration is left for the user. This means that what you end up with is something set up specifically for your own needs. Having configured your system, you will have a good understanding of it, and be able to cope with problems. It will be secure, fast, and configured just the way you want it. In terms of the software included with it, most of what would be considered standard software for all needs, is included. This includes software for use with a server or a desktop. Extra software can easily be downloaded and added. It would be...

Linux Vs Windows

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...versions of Windows have built upon 95, but the standard workings have remained basically unchanged. So what of the competition while all this was going on? Put simply, there was little commercial competition on offer from other software companies. The Apple Mac always used it's own OS, and UNIX was reserved for use on servers or universities. There were a few rival graphical OS's around the time of Windows 3.1, including Gem by Amstrad (I think, don't hold me to that!) but these never had the success of Microsoft. But out of the ashes a new rival emerged, Linus Torvald brought salvation to the world with the creation of Linux. Well, some would say that, others would say he created a pile of trash - but the fact remains that Linux is the biggest rival Microsoft have, and rather than fading out, Linux is on the rise! First of all I had...

Diamond review  The threat of Linux

Advantages: You can be dead clever down the pub
Disadvantages: No-one will care much

...at flipping triangles. Fact of the matter is that 99% of the time, it's doing bugger all. It's just sat there running a 'nobody's here' type of smartarse graphic screensaver. What a waste. What's worse is that you just upgraded to it last year and traded in a Pentium II to get it. Except you didn't trade the Pentium II in did you? Because it was worth precisely three eighths of bugger all, so you chucked it in the cupboard and forgot about it. Am I right? The truth is that your Windows PC is single user and always will be. One user at a time. However, if you were to run a Linux image on your old Pentium, you could use it as a file server, or a firewall or a print server or a dedicated Word Processor, all accessible directly from your spiffy new Windows-go-faster-stripe-version-with-furry-dice PC, and continue to get your money's worth out...

Print server shananagins.

Advantages: Simple, Effective, cheap
Disadvantages: None as far as I can see

...at all. Normally one would install the printers over the network and work from their. Thankfully however you can usually skip moving the printer around the house to install it on each PC if you just ignore the test settings for it. Then the Belkin drivers work well. Given the way this print server works it is not directly compatible with either Linux or Macs. For Macs the solution is simple, just search online for some drivers and thou shalt receive. Im using a print protocol called GiMP, this claims to work under Linux variants as well, though I haven't tested this. Overall the device is good, it connects well to wireless networks and can use the wired connection equally as well. It is able to cope printing large documents (ie large in memory usage) and never seems to crash on me. As I've said its connected to my laser printer and has...

LINUX for the NEW to linux people

Advantages: very easy to use very simular to windows / MAC
Disadvantages: NONE

...Linux is poping up every where these days and it is said that 80% of internet servers are Unix / Linux based. So what is available for me and you the home or new to linux user. SuSE linux brought to you by Novell is a great home or business linux solution. it comes pretty complete with almost any piece of software you could need in the box. i recomend SUSE because of its ease of use and simularity to windows or mac depending which you choose at start up. this can all sound very confusing but is very simple, In linux you have a choice of GUI (graphical user interface - windows) 2 known popular GUIs are GNOME and KDE. gthe GNOME desktop enviorment is very like macs OSx and the KDE desktop environment is very like windows. and you can choose which to use at logon with one click. the installation process is very simple and if you...

Say Goodbye to crashes, say hello to Linux

Advantages: Fast, Secure, Free, Powerful
Disadvantages: Rather daunting to new Users

...Debian GNU/Linux Firstly welcome to the world of Linux, in particular Debian GNU/Linux. This review/general article discusses the main features of the Debian Distribution, what Linux is, why you should switch, and getting started with your new system. Be warned that this review is quite long, but there's no need to read everything on this article, a quick skimming will give you a good introduction. So What is Linux - Technically Speaking, Linux is an Operating System microkernal, Non Technically Speaking Linux is a program of sorts that runs and maintains the hardware, software and devices of your computer and runs the programs on it. In a way, Linux is similar in function to Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac, which you'll likely be running on your computer at the moment. While a full Operating System like Windows XP comes in...

Perfect for the Linux Beginner

Advantages: Free, Open Source, Simple installation, user friendly, great device support
Disadvantages: Only for beginners really, weird missing packages errors

...you use, although in my opinion KDE looks a better. The OpenOffice.org Project is great and should be able to handle your documents and work from Microsoft's Office. There's no shortage of applications for Linux, and it's not hard at all! Before long you'll be running your own servers (not as root =P), using long, complex shell commands any maybe even writing your own programs (Linux is great for software development, and is what started me learning C). I can't recommend Mandrake Linux enough if you're on Windows and have an interest in computers, download it, burn it, and enjoy a whole new level of computing. *edit* addes spaces between paragraphs - thanks for the tip, also when you first try Linux it's a good idea to leave windows on as well, Mandrake will automatically create a menu so you can choose which OS at bootup....

A Fantastic Server!

Advantages: Reliable, powerful, robust
Disadvantages: Im yet to find one. Maybe the hidden costs in addtional items.

...While we have tinkered with vitualisation in the office, we now have a definitive path forward and needed a robust, reliable new server that had maximised uptime and ease of remote management. Therefore we have opted for a DL380 G5 and we have not been disappointed! Read on for more details of this great server and how it become such an important part of our setup. LOOKS/SIZE. The DL380 is really designed to slot into a server cabinet or rack and therefore comes in the standard 2U height configuration. It takes up minimal space in the rack while maximising the the performance. Weight is extremely heavy. It takes 2 of you to pick it up and even install the rail mounting kit (sold separately) that you use to slide it into the rack. What I do like about the mounts on this server is it gives you the option to add 2 extra bolts...

SUSE, a beginners Linux

Advantages: More programs, better hardware support and easier setup
Disadvantages: Lots of stuff you don't need

...SUSE are renowned for making really good and full distributions of Linux. I've always made a point of buying the professional version (usually around £50) and nothing less. I've been buying it since around SUSE 6.2 and it has always been top of my books. SUSE bundle everything you could possibly need, and loads of stuff you don't. Quite often you find some funky stickers and maybe a case badge, keyring or pin badge depending on the edition. But to the important stuff! SUSE produce a serious manual with their products. Few newbies know that everything you could possibly need to know is installed and can be accessed with the MAN command, but this information is usually technical and less user friendly. The manuals make everything less technical, more straight forward and take you step by step for all different kinds of setup...

What is this LINUX thing anyway

Advantages: Cheap and wide range of additional features
Disadvantages: Not for the feint of heart or novice user

...If you want an overview of what generic LINUX is - read on. There are already some excellent opinions in this category which explain the technical details of Red Hat Linux (RHL) far better than I ever will, instead, what I hope to offer is a compact summary of what Red Hat Linux 8.0 is, why you might consider using it. Red Hat 8.0 is the latest version of the most widely used distribution of Linux, and not without good reason. People may argue other flavours of Linux are better in specific circumstances, however RHL is quite easily the most written about, and most books tend to explain things in terms of Red Hat, and then go on to describe the differences in other distributions. --------------------------------------------- What exactly is an operating system? --------------------------------------------- The Operating...
