Reviews of lite-on
You just can't go wrong with Lite-on
Review of Lite-ON CD-RW 40r 24w 10rw Int IDE RP by
ryt3h
Advantages: Fast speeds, value for money
Disadvantages: none
...Lite-on are a well respected company that have been around for a while.
LITE-ON oringinated from a team of scientist and engineers from ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Insitute) in 1995. LITE-ON Information Technology corportation are constantly devoloping anit-vibration mechanical design, advanced circuit design and increased performance. LITE-ON Information Technology Corporation (LITE-ON I.T.) this was a big part of the LITE-ON group which concentrated on the optical storage devices which then led to the creation on these fine CDROM drives we have today.
This LITE-ON CD-RW is a very good drive and after purchasing one for personnal use I have purchased many more for computers I have built for friends and family. Very easy installation, driver support is excelent.
With dvd-rw's coming down alot in price recently I would...

Write on with the Lite-On
Review of Lite-ON CD-RW 48r 40w 12rw Int IDE RP by
Jeronimo
Advantages: Fast burning, can copy nearly anything
Disadvantages: Er.. boring fascia??
...I was looking to upgrade my 16x burner to something with a little more punch. My friend's dad had bought a Lite-On 24x speed burner and it came highly recommended.
After a little more research, the 40x Lite-On seemed the way to go, and for a reasonable price.
Once it had arrived, I opened the bright red box and peered in. Contained within was the drive itself, 4 screws to install in it your system case, an audio cable, an 80-minute CD-R, an 80-minute CD-RW, a CD containing Nero Burning Rom and the instruction manual (useless till you install the drive of course!), and a slip of paper containing basic installation procedures.
No IDE cable is included with this drive, so unlike some manufacturers, Lite-On expect you to be replacing another CD drive, or have a spare connector already available.
Installing the drive is no hassle...

Great Value
Review of Philips DVDR 3380 by
Johnny5isalive
Advantages: See review, cheap I paid £79 for 1 and £40 for a second for my father.
Disadvantages: Remote fiddly, start-up speed.
...I've owned a Lite-on DVD-RW and a HDD Freeview Box with twin tuner (great but went faulty after 12 months), so this review is based on comparision with those products.
Positives - The 3380 is slimmer and most importantly quiet, both of the other products suffered with intrusive fan noise. Record quality is good in EP (4hrs) and excellent in SP(2hrs) and HQ(1hr). DivX compatibility and ability to record from DV Cam to DVD is useful as is ability to use both + and - format discs.
RWs can be read by my Sony Laptop regardless of number of recordings on the disc, the discs from my Liteon could not be read until they were made compatible. This is useful, if you record a programme on an RW disc then decide you'd like to keep the recording but free up the RW disc you can make a copy from the RW to a + or - R disc on your laptop, then erase...

The great allrounder...
Review of LiteOn SHW-1635S by
Uberloinvongenchler
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, lightscribing at a low price
Disadvantages: lightscribing is not as fast as some more expensive units
...This liteon DVD-RW/Lightsribe is one of the best for the price. It writes to both dvd + and - and also dual layer discs.
What makes it special is that it is as fast at these "burning" tasks as more specialised drives, with less features. So despite having the capability to tackle almost all modern formats of disc, it loses none of the speed capabilites that you might expect.
Also a welcome plus is the ability to change the front fascia. A choice of white and black ensures that it looks good in almost any PC and it is supplied with screws and the popular and easy to use "nero" burning ROM software so installation is quite quick. Mine looks like it was pre-designed specially for my case (antec sonata 2) as it fits flush and colour matches the case perfectly.
Overall it makes for an uncostly way to improve your computers useability...

Liteon LVW5045? More like Liteoff.
Review of LIteOn LVW-5045 by
wilkinsgraham
Advantages: Low cost
Disadvantages: Dodgy menus, very disk fussy, lousy DVD burner that will fail.
...Dodgy menus that jump back to the previous screen, a very temperamental DVD burner that gives up after about 100 uses.
The unit records well to hard disk, with good quality. Editing is a bit hit and miss, with no real fine control. No way of making recordings exactly fit the disk.
My biggest gripe is the DVD burner, which really isn't up to it.
It's extremely fussy over media type and if it doesn't like a blank disk, it seems to have the nice touch of rendering it unusable.
Eventually the DVD burner in mine gave up all together after ruining 14 disks.
Upgrading the firmware doesn't solve the problem.
I eventually replaced the DVD burner in mine with a Liteon 20X unit for about £16. This solved the problem, and for the moment, it's been working perfectly. Fitting a replacement burner is straightforward enough, though getting it to neatly...

Liteon A740GX
Review of Liteon HD-A 740 GX by
portadownred
Advantages: Really easy to set-up and use.
Disadvantages: Unreliable
...I purchased the Liteon A740GX model in December 2006. It was my first DVD Recorder/HDD. I found this incredibly easy to set-up and incorporate with my SKY Digibox.
The menu system and ease of use is fantastic. Even my wife (non-technical) has been able to use this comfortably. The ability to read avi. is a big bonus as this means you can play direct downloads from the PC without the need for further conversion software. I really like the icon driven program selection. My 3 1/2 year old can actually select a pre-recorded material from the harddrive and playback. So simple.
However, I purchased the unit online from SVP. I never used the record to DVD function until I had the unit around 4 months. It would not recognize blank media of any sort but would still playback pre-recorded material on the same brand of discs. The unit itself...

More Lights Off Than LiteOn
Review of Liteon LVW-1105 HC by
sghawken
Advantages: Easy to use
Disadvantages: Dreadfully unreliable
...I have always been a strong supporter of LiteOn DVD products, as well as a DVD writer in one of my PC's I have two LiteON DVD players and two different LiteON DVD recorders all of which I have reviewed and been fiercely proud of; however a recent budget purchase has put LiteOn on a much different plateau in my mind.
In our new home the size of one of my DVD recorders meant that a new purchase was needed; room in our bedroom in a little scarce as we traded down to increase our financial situation. With new bedroom furniture in it meant an existing recorder was millimetres to big for the location. So I headed off into town where I purchased the LiteOn LVW-1105 from Currys. Digital, priced at just £79. Proudly rushing home with my new toy under my arm I was confident that the LiteOn brand was the one for me.
Install is straight forward...

Lite-On - RIGHT-On
Review of Lite-ON CD-RW 40r 32w 12rw OEM + NERO by
roberthart
Advantages: Price. Fast CD writer
Disadvantages: Poor sustained data transfer
...I bought this drive for about £45 which was the retail version so it included Nero and a couple of blank CD's. This i have to say is a bargain as i purchased it nearly a year ago now. I have written approaching 200 CD's with this now and had very few failures (the few that i have had were mostly my fault). Also the laser is showing no signs of wearing out as yet which is quite prone to happening with CD Rewriter drives.
Installation of the drive is relatively easy if you have installed any other cd drive before, and the instructions are detailed enough to see beginners through.
At 32X for write speed it is fairly middle of the range now, there are a number of manufacturers including Lite-On that produce 48X write and i think even 52X write drives. However i will think that most people will find it fairly difficult to find writable cds...

Great, fast, reliable drive.
Review of LiteOn DH-20A1S by
joefireline
Advantages: Fast, reliable, cheap, reads all sorts of discs, not mega loud.
Disadvantages: Before driver update, problem reading a certain disc, just update it!
...This is a great cheap Sata drive, that works perfectly, effectively, efficently, fast, and is reliable.
Being one of the fastest drives in the world (quoted as being THE fastest), this is a pretty good drive! I got 2GB of data writen to a DVD in UNDER 2 minutes, which is increadible, so no problems in terms of speed, that's for sure.
The drive works quiter than other drives, but obviously not silently.
The drive opens and closes fast enough, and starts reading the disc with a reasonably low delay.
The drive comes with Nero software, though I don't really get alone with this software, so I use another piece of software to write CDs and DVDs.
I would recommend you download the latest drivers off LiteOn's website, as I did have a bit of a problem in reading some discs, which installing the latest drivers helped to read them, though...

Samsung Drives - Thumbs definately up!
Review of Samsung Super-WriteMaster SH-S202J by
Invader_Zim
Advantages: Fast, Quiet, Affordable
Disadvantages: none
...Hi,
In the past I have always used Pioneer and Liteon Drives in the past. But I bought a Samsung drive (Super-WriteMaster SH-S202J) from www.ishift.co.uk and I must say that not only is it just as fast (20x) and I have seen no real difference in performance between the IDE or SATA drives as the Liteon and Pioneer drives but it is much much quieter! To be honest the whole build quality of the Samsung seems a lot better as well plus it came with the software I needed, unlike many of the Pioneer OEM drives I have bought. Considering the low price I paid I think this is by far one of the best value for money drives I have ever bought. Very happy, this drive comes highly recommended! A+++...
