Once upon a time, in Liverpool...
Advantages: An excellent museum dedicated to the Fab Four, suitable for all age groups
Disadvantages: Some of the headsets are a bit dodgy (it was just mine) and some displays not working
...the name and outside the museum there was a special Sgt. Pepper/Yellow Submarine Superlambanana which really set the scene for the colourful exhibitions that were set to be on offer once inside the Beatles Story. My Mum literally had to drag me away from the concrete mound because I instantly fell in love with it...
ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR!
As you go inside the Beatles story, you are instantly hurled back into the threshold of War-time Britain, when the four babes destined to be a part of Britain?s most prolific America Music Invaders were born. Although some of this section of the museum wasn?t specifically Beatles related, it gave you a good idea of Liverpool in the aftermath of WWII and also gave you an inkling as to what kind of environment John, Paul, George and Ringo grew up in.
On the right hand side as you walk into...

Hit The North
Advantages: A veritable page-turner of a travelogue
Disadvantages: Nothing major
..., sounds, people, and obviously its terribly unhealthy but startlingly wonderful food. And if nothing else, the uninitiated will learn just how diverse the apparently homogenous "North" actually is.
Starting at the railway centre of the universe, or "Crewe" as it's more commonly known, he travels in turn to Liverpool, Manchester, Wigan (his hometown, even though he's forced to admit that technically he's a Scouser because he was born at Whiston Hospital), Yorkshire, Lancashire, the coast from Blackpool to the Lakes, finally arriving at the Scottish border via Newcastle and the vast North East, spending a chapter exploring each. Along the way he notes what has changed, what will never change, what's great and what's rubbish, and is never less than amusing while doing so.
Maybe this book does work best if you're an expat Northerner, but I...

Review of Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North - Stuart Maconie
|
Love Letter to the North of England
Advantages: Great prose, funny and warm hearted - like your archetypal northerner
Disadvantages: A little smug in places
...book Maconie sets out to discover what the north of England is and what it means to those who live there.
He starts his journey in Crewe, which, after some deliberation, he decides is the "start" of the north. He does most of his travelling by train, something I must admit I admire, as I find it the most civilised mode of transport myself.
He makes a point of talking to people along the way and he manages to transplant conversations and encounters he has into words in a humorous and colourful way.
He doesn't claim to visit everywhere in the north - but he describes the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester. He paints vivid pictures of two mighty cities, strong enough for me to end up visiting both. He describes the new town of Skelmersdale, where he worked briefly as a college lecturer and talks warmly of the people he encountered...

Liverpool Football Club
Advantages: Great squad, great fans, great manager, great history
Disadvantages: No league title for 16 years
...the bad spotlight. He quickly regained his form and produced a man of the match performance against Manchester United to help Liverpool win the Worthington Cup.
More recently he has produced heroics that surely nobody could forget in the Champions League final. After seeming dead and buried at 3-0 down at half time Liverpool somehow levelled it with a magnificent second half performance. Extra time saw Jerzy make one of the best double saves ever from Andriy Shevchenko with just seconds on the clock. He then went on to produce heroics in the penalty shoot out and the rest, as they say, is history.
2. Jan Kromkamp
Born on 17th August 1980 in Makkinga, Holland, Jan is a recent addition to the squad. He started out with Go Ahead Eagles in 1998 and, after making 61 appearances, was snapped up by AZ Alkmaar. He rose to prominence thanks to...

Odeon - Liverpool's Number One
Advantages: Good sized screens, great auditoriums, caters for everyone,
Disadvantages: Popcorn sometimes cardboardy, expensive chocolate treats,
...I am a huge cinema fan, and living in the centre of Birmingham for the last couple of years has meant putting up with Odeon Birmingham. Needless to say, I was very happy to discover the brand spanking new Odeon in Liverpool One,
Odeon Liverpool One
Odeon is actually the largest cinema chain in the UK, created by Oscar Deutsch in 1928. Some say that the name comes from Ancient Greek, others say that it comes from the motto Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation.
There are currently... a lot of Odeon cinemas across the UK (I tried to count, but it's a lot!). The website has a cinema finder to help you locate your nearest. For this review I shall be talking about Odeon, Liverpool ONE.
When Liverpool ONE was redeveloped, the city centre Odeon branch was relocated here. The entrance can be found...

Lively Liverpool
Advantages: I live here
Disadvantages: Some shops aren't here, the weather
...(locally known as Paddy's Wigwam) on Mount Pleasant, near to Liverpool University Student's Union, and at the other end of Hope Street, The Anglican Cathedral, the largest Anglican Cathedral in Europe. Admission is free to both but donations are welcome.
SCENERY:
The city itself is quite attractive. If you take a walk down to the Pierhead you can gaze at the Liver Birds on top of the Liver Buildings. There are lots of old buildings in the city that give you a real sense of the city's history.
If you want to go a little further afield whilst you're in Liverpool, a good tip (for the summer) is to head North to Formby and the surrounding area. Here you will find the Red Squirrel nature reserve and a nice beach and sand dunes. You can get a train to Formby from Liverpool Central station, or alternatively drive there. It is about 12-15 miles...

Wife in the north
Advantages: Some humour
Disadvantages: Not much happens
...As a wife in Northumberland myself, I was keen to read Judith O?Reilly?s book, wife in Northumberland. I had seen the book for sale in Waterstones but thought I would borrow it from my local library. There was a long waiting list (obviously others wanted to read a book with a local connection) After a wait of 3 weeks I was very keen to start reading!
The cover of the book with its cartoon family suggests that this is a humorous book. To confirm this there is a quote from Jenny Colgan saying that she howled with laughter at every page. This sounded like my kind of light read. However this book was not what I had been expecting. There is a lot of humour but it is also a very poignant and moving book.
The book is written in diary form and plots Judith?s reluctant move from London to north Northumberland. The opening entry describes...

Liverpool in trouble
Advantages: One of the biggest clubs in Europe...
Disadvantages: ...going through their worst run in 50 years.
...Picture the scene; it's early November and after a 2-0 win against West Ham, Liverpool went seven points clear at the top of the Premiership and were striding towards a place in the next round of the Champions League, it appeared that it would have to take something very special to knock them out of their stride. Three months on and defeats to the likes of Middlesborough and Sunderland have seen Liverpool slump down the Premiership with no wins in eleven games and an early exit from the Champion League at the hands of little known Swiss club Basle. So where has it all gone wrong for the mighty reds?
Every pundit, fan and his dog has had their two pence worth. Excuses and reasons range from poor management and lack of commitment from the players, to wrong formation and wrong players. I think the problem is much simpler...

The North Pier, Blackpool
Advantages: Lots of fresh air, fully accessible by disabled visitors
Disadvantages: A small admission charge
...If you think about the main English seaside resorts then the chances are that they will have a pier. There is something very quintessentially English about seaside piers and in Britain they are largely restricted to England, with a handful in Wales and none at all north of the border in Scotland.
Blackpool in the north west of England is unusual because it boasts three different piers. The North Pier, Central Pier and South Pier. As its name suggests The North Pier has the most northerly location of the three. It is also the oldest pier in the town and at 503 metres long it is also its longest pier.
Eugenius Birch was drafted in to design The North Pier. He had been responsible for the design of Britain's first seaside pier at Margate. This was his second pier project and following its success he would go on to design a further...

UPDATED Liverpool FC Treble winners 2001
Advantages: On their Day can Beat absolutely ANYONE
Disadvantages: Cant we just win something the easy way for once
...Oh well, I think its about time I re-wrote my opinion on Liverpool, I wrote the original opinion earlier in the season, when we where showing terrible inconsistency, but it seems this got sorted out, as we went on to win a “HISTORIC TREBLE”, by winning the Worthington Cup, The FA Cup and the U.E.F.A Cup, a fete that has never been done by any English team, and hopefully we can round off a great season on Saturday, by gaining the third Champions League place, by beating Charlton Athletic.
The Worthington cup was won in Cardiff on the 25th of February, by beating a very brave and committed Birmingham City, who took us all the way to penalties, after the match ended 1-1 after extra-time, maybe this was the warning to us Liverpool fans, that if we won this Treble, it would be at the cost of our Health and Sanity, as this was...
