The Dead Centre of Ljubljana

...Spending a freezing January afternoon in the company of the dead might not be everyone?s idea of a good time but Ljubljana?s Zale cemetery is a wonderful work of art and design that is worth a visit at any time of year; in fact, the attention and work that has been invested in the design of the gardens and walkways almost demands that you see it at different times of the year. Designed by Slovenia?s best known and most prolific architect Joze Plecnik, Zale was completed in 1940 as a re-working of the older cemetery attached to the Church of the Holy Cross. Examples of Plecnik?s work are easy to spot in Ljubljana and few visitors leave the city, even after just a short break, unaware of who Plecnik was and the contribution he made to the way Ljubljana looks today. Review of Zale Cemetery, Ljubljana

Ljubljana's Unofficial Main Square

Advantages: Nearly traffic free; handsome buildings; good place to people watch
Disadvantages: None really

...Visitors to Ljubljana will find themselves crossing Presernov trg many times over the course of even the shortest stay. The square stands at the place where the old town meets new Ljubljana and is a popular meeting place and the focus for various events during the year. It also contains some of the city's most striking art nouveau buildings. Although Presernov trg is now almost entirely traffic free you can see that it used to be a road junction; since traffic was banned a couple of years ago and lengthy works started on nearby Kongresni trg (to my mind one of the nicest square in the city, especially in winter), Presernov trg has become the heartbeat of the city. The square is named for France Preseren, Slovenia?s national poet; he is commemorated in monuments all over the country but my favourite is an enormous statue in the town...

Review of Presernov trg, Ljubljana

Out of Africa - and into Ljubljana

Advantages: Varied menu, tasty food, good value for Ljubljana centre
Disadvantages: Some minor issues around food presentation

But if you want something different ? and like me can?t find the Swiss restaurant purported to be just outside Maribor somewhere near Spodnja Duplek ? then you?ll need to go to the capital, Ljubljana. The majority of non-Slovene, -Italian or-Mexican restaurants in Ljubljana would not survive elsewhere in the country. There?s a restaurant at Bled ? and you could hardly get more touristy than Bled ? that does serve some Indian dishes but the mainstay of its menu is a selection of game dishes. Basically it?s the tourists and other foreign visitors that keep these restaurants going which is a shame because when a good one opens, you never know whether it?ll still be there when you go back. During our recent trip in May 2011 we noticed that an African restaurant, Kalabas, had opened on Trubarjeva, the pretty pedestrianised street...
