the Lodge on Loch Lomond

Advantages: Possibly the best hotel you will ever stay in!
Disadvantages: None

...This has to be one of the most beautiful and romantic places to stay in the World let alone Scotland. Set on the banks of Loch Lomond, this cabin style lodge hotel has everything you could wish for. I stayed here in February this year on the eve of my bithday. We stumbled across it while tring to find a place to stay on a tour round Scotland and boy am I glad we did. The prices were higher than we had been paying (£150) but thhis included a three course dinner and the best room I have ever stayed in. The room was all open plan with a low partition separating the bathroom from the bedroom/lounge. A fantastic large bed, leather chairs, tv and balcony looking out on the loch. The bath/shower was automatically set for a set time/temperatures all you had to do was press a button and the bath would fill to the right level! Brilliant...

Italian Restaurant on the shores of Loch Lomond

Advantages: Quality food, bustling atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can get overcrowded

...La Scarpetta, Balloch Road, Balloch, Loch Lomond, Scotland G83 8SS, Tel 01389 758 247, is a traditional Italian Restaurant situated near the banks of Loch Lomond. The restaurant is very popular with both locals and tourists, and therefore booking in advance is recommended. The bustling restaurant does create a good atmosphere, however this can sometimes start to feel a bit overcrowded, as though a few too many tables have been squeezed in. The food is traditional Italian and a good quality and variety on the menu. What we had to eat : On our last visit I had homemade pate, which was delicious but rather heavy, while my husband had parmesan soup. Not being the greatest fan of this type of cheese I thought sounded it pretty horrible, and was expecting something which looked like floating toenail clippings, but when it arrived...

They Really Are "The Bonnie, Bonnie Banks............."

Advantages: So much to see and do
Disadvantages: So much to see and do

...Myself, hubby and the kids all managed to get two weeks holidays together over Easter. It was wonderful, no running around ferrying the family to work, paper round, school, clubs etc. Just two lazy weeks where I could have a long lie if I wanted, hang the washing out mid morning instead of before 8am, watch telly, do nothing Ahhhhhhh............wonderful!! Of course we didn't want to just laze around the whole time and decided to have a few days here and there. The first day trip we decided to take was over to the magnificent scenery by Loch Lomond. Loch Lomond is a truly beautiful loch set amongst the tranquil, rolling hills in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park where it is said that the highlands meet the lowlands. This meeting place can actually be seen from Conic Hill on the south-east shores, a meeting place formed many...

Get Back to Nature....... and Have Some Fun by the Loch

Advantages: Plenty to do, lots of nature, quality time with the family
Disadvantages: None

...We recently decided the have a healthy, fun, family day out. Having visited Loch Katrine a few years earlier we decided this would be the idea place to meet all our needs for a lovely day out. The last time we visited we hired bikes to cycle around the loch but this time we decided to take our own bikes. Loch Katrine is a bit of a hidden gem. She is situated 8 Miles from Callander along the A821 through Brig o' Turk or alternatively 7 miles from Aberfoyle again along the A821 but this time travelling through the Duke's Pass, quite a narrow winding road but beautiful and scenic nevertheless. The Loch is set in the heart of the Trossachs and is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by rolling, heather covered hills and many different species of trees. It is also so unbelievably quiet and peaceful, almost as if the hills are sheltering...

Gateway To Loch Lomond And The Trossachs

Advantages: See text of opinion
Disadvantages: See text of opinion

...;t seem to suffer too much from water logging, which can be a problem with a parkland course on the West Coast of Scotland, as the annual rainfall here can reach torrential levels at times. (Witness the latest debacle at the Scottish Open at the fairly new Loch Lomond course earlier on in July, when the pros would have been better wearing welly boots that golf shoes!) I’m sure the many slopes and run offs help Cardross in this respect, but they must have their drainage in good nick as well. And the greens, at least on the few occasions that I’ve had the pleasure of playing on them, are invariably in superb condition. So I have only myself to blame for my bad putting! Well, maybe the numerous humps, hillocks, and many split-levels on some of the large, undulating greens can take SOME of the blame. So you better have your...

Kiss Me, [Loch] Kate!

Advantages: Lovely scenery, lovely walk, just lovely
Disadvantages: We missed the boat!

...- a reclining, lazy S shaped loch. According to my Michelin Green Guide, it is 10 miles long and, at its widest point, is 2 miles wide, and is apparently the main loch that supplies water to Glasgow. I thought that slightly strange since it is hardly a rival to its impressively large neighbour to the west, Loch Lomond. But what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up in many different ways, which I'll tell you more about later. How do you get there? If you're walking or cycling the West Highland Way, you could stop for the night on Loch Lomond at Inversnaid Hotel, and then walk or ride east the next day on the road to Stronachlachar, which comes out on the western side the loch. I suppose if you're boating on Lomond, you might also be able to moor at that point and also walk or cycle - which I approximate is about 6 miles long and which goes...

Review of Loch Katrine

The Loch of the Swine.

Advantages: Great scenery, and low level walking suitable for all.
Disadvantages: Higher level walking for experienced hillwalkers only.

...Droves of cattle once made the strength-sapping journey from the Highlands of Scotland over the Eastern Cairgorms to the markets of Crieff and Falkirk. The Highland weather was just too severe for over-wintering cattle. They were sold in the autumn to lowland farmers with more sheltered pastures. This practice has left a legacy of ancient drove roads, now providing a wealth of walking opportunity in magnificent mountain scenery. The droves of cattle have been replaced now by droves of hill-walkers who descend on the popular visitor centre and car park at the end of Loch Muick. The majority of visitors, though, content themselves with the relatively easy walking around the Loch. But many take to the hill tracks, and watching the gaggle of walkers leaving the car park, you soon marvel at the ability of the hills to swallow people up...

Loch Fyne - delicious!

Advantages: Fantastic food, great service, lovely atmosphere
Disadvantages: none

...Loch Fyne in Nottingham, one of 49 branches in the country, is situated right in the city centre in a great location on King Street. Transport links are great, with a multi-storey car park a few hundred yards down the road, as well as the taxi ranks, bus stops and tram stops. The restaurant is small, but nicely furnished, and offers a good variety of seafood dishes. The decor is lovely inside, and the staff are always warm and welcoming. The food is always of a very high standard, but the atmosphere remains relaxed and friendly. Although Loch Fyne specialises in using the finest seafood ingredients, there are always one or two alternative options for those who are not keen on fish. However, in general the restaurant would not be recommended for those who are not keen on seafood! The dishes include fish such as salmon, sole, lobster...

Experience the beauty of Loch Laggan

Advantages: Lovely scenery
Disadvantages: The midges

...Sometimes it seems that there are breathtaking views on every bend of the road in the Scottish Highlands but I generally find that it is the ones that are a little off the beaten track that are the most memorable as there is always that feeling that one has discovered that view for the very first time. Off the beaten track is not really a description that can be applied to Loch Laggan since the A86 road runs along more or less the full 16km length of its northern shores. This is one of the main routes to Fort William but it is a slower journey than the other routes so many tourists tend to avoid it. Loch Laggan is a freshwater loch that boasts the largest freshwater beach in the British Isles. Its soft golden sands are enough to rival many of the great coastal beaches of Britain but sadly this beach is largely out of bounds as it...

Balmaha, a paradise village on Loch Lomond

Advantages: Beautiful scenic village, only 40 minutes from Glasgow
Disadvantages: None

...Balmaha is a beautiful Scottish village on the shores of the twenty-five mile long - Loch Lomond. I confess to being slightly biased about Balmaha as I live here and think it’s the most beautiful place on earth but other people do too. Its difficult to believe that its only a 40 minute drive from Glasgow. It is going to be part of the first Scottish National Park due to be opened next year. There are only about seventy people living in Balmaha but it is very popular with Glaswegians as a day trip. There are a few B and B’s and a couple of inns and places to eat. The Oak Tree Inn is particularly child friendly (within reason). There is also a Visitors Centre, a garden nursery with a coffee shop, a gift shop. The Visitors Centre has a sort of exhibition about local activity, geography of the area and a film about...
