The London Science Museum

Advantages: Its free entry and your chilren learn as they play
Disadvantages: A nightmare to get to, very busy at peak times

...Science Museum During the Easter holidays, hubby and I decided to take our children to The London Science Museum. Though it was a very long and tiring day, it was agreed we had an enjoyable time. The museum was started in the nineteenth-century. Its aim was to improve science and technical education. Prince Albert was the key figure in this development and he was responsible for the "Great Exhibition" of 1851. The buildings exterior looks aged and dated; if you walk around the rear of the museum there are various large craters in the concrete walls. These were caused by bombing in the last war and were never repaired as a show of just how much damage was done but the building still did not disintegrate. A plaque on the wall commemorates the strength of the building and its part in sustaining the war...

London Transport Museum

Advantages: Great place to take kids
Disadvantages: Not very big and a bit pricey for adults.

...The London Transport Museum recently completed a large scale root and branch refurbishment and reopened towards the end of 2007. I know this because I walk past it every day on the way to work and could witness the inch by inch progress being made over the last year. The LT Museum always had a reputation as a good place to visit. One of the first museums to offer a wide range of interactive exhibits it has always been a popular attraction, enhanced by its excellent location. However, despite again working on its doorstep a dozen years ago I have never previously been tempted to visit. I mean, it's just a bunch of trains and buses isn't it and I see enough of those commuting. Having children has changed my attitude though, and when the opportunity came recently to have a family day out this was near the top of the list. Getting...

My musings on the Museum of London Docklands

Advantages: well presented, not too busy, free for certin people
Disadvantages: not a lot for children in the main galleris

...The regeneration of London's Docklands has been a huge success. Derelict warehouses have been converted into swanky bars and restaurant, shipping companies have been superseded by financial institutions housed in shimmering ultra modern sky scrapers and traditional worker's houses have been replaced by Legoland waterfront apartments. Its a fascinating area but I find it a bit soulless and toy town especially with the DLR gliding along like a model rail. During a recent visits to docklands I decided to visits the Museum in the Docklands to explore the area's past, present and future. The Museum in Docklands is a branch of one of my favourite museums in London, the Museum of London. I love the Museum of London as it is like a huge local museum with all the same collections such as pottery, skeletons etc. but it is presented in...

The Design Museum (London)

Advantages: Good collection
Disadvantages: Admission expensive

..., with do not touch written on them, you are encouraged to sit in them and evaluate them, and see if these big name twentieth designers were really worth their money. Not like the V&A ( Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington, London) where everything is behind barriers or glass, and you must not touch on pain of death,. The V&A does have a much bigger collection the design museum is tiny in comparison and it only has twentieth century artifacts, but at the V&A you can not touch anything. In terms of facilities the Design museum does reasonably well , there is a café on the first floor overlooking the Thames, which was being re decorated at the time so I have not been in, though it looked pretty reasonable, the usual coffee and snacks I think. Also there is a bookshop specialising in books on design and designers as you would expect...

My favourite museum in London

Advantages: learning was never so much fun - free entrance - amazing museum
Disadvantages: could be crowded... that's all

...Natural History Museum of London is perhaps one of my favourite museums in the World. Whenever I'm in London I try to visit it. The museum is in a "cathedral" building. This creation was deliberately designed by Alfred Waterhouse to inspire awe... and it does. It's even hard to photograph because it's very big compared to the surrounding area. The elaborate Romanesque style is impressive as the giant cast of Diplodocus skeleton in the main hall of the Life Galleries. This museum makes learning fun! They have amazing galleries and a vast collection (70 million plants, animals, fossils, rocks and minerals to be exact) including dinosaurs (also a real-size animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex roaring at you) and Creepy Crawlies gallery. Also impressive is a giant tree slice on top of the stairs in the hall which dates from 557 to 1892 when...

A museum with an important lesson

Advantages: A great lesson of history and humanity... and it's FREE!
Disadvantages: none really

...the laundry bin to be emptied and then told to move along. I'm very precise about where I put my stuff and his manners ticked me off, I stayed there putting stuff back properly for a long time just to annoy him (and it did but couldn't say), after that he was nicer with the next people. Anyway This didn't affect my visit to the museum but could have. ------------------------Location------------------------ Imperi al War Museum London Lambeth Road London SE1 6HZ Opening times: Open daily (except 24, 25 and 26 December) 10.00am - 6.00pm Admission: FREE (NB: special exhibitions may charge an admission fee) The museum is between two tube station (Lambeth North and Elephand & Castle). The closest is Lambeth North, from there you walk about 300m to the Museum or alternatively there is a bus stop just in front of it....

Clink Prison Museum

Advantages: Lots of information, creepy atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not much to see

...Feeling a little bit home sick for a place that is no longer my home (London) I decided to take a day trip. I planned the trip well in advance so there is really no excuse for the fact that I arrived there with nothing planned to do for the day. I met my best friend at London Bridge Station armed with a booklet of 2 for 1 offers. Over lunch we ruled out just about every possibility. The problem is that we're very different and although we have a few interests in common it is usually very difficult to find something that we both want to do (with the exception of eating, we both enjoy that!). We decided to visit the Clink Prison Museum because it was close by and it was cheap. After half an hour of searching for it we gave up. My time in London was too short to be looking for a museum that neither of us were particularly interested in...

The Greatest Museum of London

Advantages: Costs no money, very interesting
Disadvantages: -

...Our trip to the NHM I will tell you something about the Natural History Museum in London today, which we visited last year. I hope you enjoy reading the article. It is Tuesday 14th of October, 10.30 o´clock in the morning, our third day in London. After a few discussions about how to spend our free time in the morning, we decide to go to the Natural History Museum, because it´s no long way to get there, it is free and we find no better choice.. We, that´s a group of five people of our class: Svenja, Prisca, Kathrin, Janine and Natascha. We first think that this museum is called National History Museum and expect that it is about the history of Britain. We are very surprised when we recognize that the museum ist about NATURE and not about the British NATION! After leaving the South Kensington underground station we...

WELCOME TO THE AGE OF SCIENCE (Natural History Museum)

Advantages: nteresting, educational, fun, something for everybody above the age of 2, free
Disadvantages: NONE

...I was delighted to find out that National History Museum (as well as Science museum) became completely free of charge some time between 1992 when I last visited and now. As soon as my daughter was big enough to say dinosaur I took here there on one of our day London trips and we spent about 2.5 hours wandering about the collections. The building itself makes it worth a visit, now beautifully cleaned to reveal Neo-Gothic glory of the intricate multi-coloured facade where the sculptures depict members of the animal kingdom rather than gargoyles. Welcome to the beginnings of the science age. The Natural History museum comprises Life Galleries, covering mostly animal life (a lot of them extinct) and Earth Galleries, covering subjects like geology, volcanoes, minerals and the like. Please note that there is very, very little plant related...

The London Transport Museum, good or bad?

Advantages: Educational. Find out loads about london transport history.
Disadvantages: Boring if your not interested in transport.

...Well i think the museum is very good, it focuses on how transport has developed over the years. The parts of the collection involve history of the tube, buses, trams and taxi's. It also shows in most of those topics how they are probably going to progress even further into the future. ..: Where Is It? :.. The museum is located in Central London in Covent Garden. It is missable though cos i didn't see it, but there is an underground sign outside with Museum written on it so you should find it quite easily. ..: What Are The Contents Of The Collection? :.. The museum is home to an old district line tube train which has got over a million miles on the milometer. A few trams from the early 90's which used to run on the Kingsway Underpass. Some buses that were pulled by horses in the 1800's and war-period. There is also a brand new...
