A breath of fresh air in south London

Advantages: One of the nicest and most varied in the locality, a nice cafe,
Disadvantages: open to the adjoining golf course in parts (for dog walkers)

...I?ve found that owning a dog needing lots of exercise like my Labrador and having an appetite that could embarrass Homer Simpson is a match made in heaven sometimes. Some of my favourite little cafes and pubs have been found whilst out walking our dog. I have a keen eye for books which describe good walks (not necessarily dog focussed) which feature a pub stop half way around, or a nice café somewhere nearby. That was how I first heard about High Elms Country Park. Not too far from home, but I probably wouldn?t bother travelling there if it weren?t for the opportunity to take my dog somewhere different every so often. A Central Location, Ideal For Exploring London

So as a surprise I arranged a weekend in London, a decent hotel, show and a trip on the London Eye. Having consulted a number of websites and talked to a few people about the best places to stay I opted to try the Novotel as they seemed to have some very reasonable deals on. Once I'd decided that it was then choosing one to stay at and it made sense to get one near the London Eye and near to the Tube stations, so I opted for the Novotel in Southwark. I booked the whole thing using the Novotel's website and because of this there are some better rates than you might otherwise get. ...Situated on London's South Bank, opposite the main entrance to the Globe Theatre, and ten minutes walk from London Bridge station, Tas Pide is a real treat to find. I first went there after visiting their sister restaurant, only a short walk away on Borough High Street. While at the other restaurant I picked up a card thinking that it was for them, but only realised when I next came to book that I had actually picked up the wrong one - undeterred I phoned and booked a table at this one, and discovered to my delight that it was just as good, if not better than it's sister. Advantages: a good laugh
Disadvantages: you can't get to the really cool parts

And I think the small child, after he had stopped crying, really appreciated my spirited attempt to transport him back to a world of conflict, death and misery. So. Right. HMS Belfast. Moored on the south bank of the Thames, this is a World War II warship (see: facts!) that has been converted into a public attraction. You board via a disappointingly unrickety gangway, and once on board, are allowed free access to the ship's eight or so decks. Well, not quite free access. Ha - you idiot! In actual fact, it's free! Absolutely free! I would happily have paid upwards of a pound for all this entertainment, but I didn't have to. South Bank Shakespeare

Advantages: Good plays, cheap prices
Disadvantages: lots of restricted view seats, open air if the weather is bad

...The Globe is situated on Bankside, between the Tate Modern and London Bridge and although it has only been (re-)opened for a few years, it has managed to establish, for itself, a place in the hearts of Londoners and tourists alike. The Globe is an attempt to reconstruct the Globe from Shakespearean times, complete with open 'yard' where the 'groundlings' (or people who watch, standing in the Yard) stand. The theatre itself is surprisingly small, especially by modern standards. There is a lovely new box office building, which has details about shows, schedules and events, as well as a gift shop with lots of (unsurprisingly) Shakespeare memorabilia. As for the productions, well, each season, (which runs roughly from mid-May to mid-September) they run three productions. Usually they have been three of Shakespeare's plays, but...

South Bank for Nursing?

Advantages: Good handouts!
Disadvantages: Slow blackboard system, short notice on exams, long time waiting for results

...London South Bank University is one of the oldest universities in London. It has three campuses, one in Southwark, one in Harold Wood and one in Whipps Cross, though as far as I am aware, Harold Wood and Whipps Cross campus are only used for faculty of health and social care. I chose London South Bank, mainly, because I did not have a choice! I had always wanted to do adult nursing but left school with no GCSE's so i took a cadet nursing course at LSBU and gained an NVQ level 2 with some extra credits, this meant I had to stay on at LSBU to do my adult nursing. I started Adult Nursing on March 2008 but have been at LSBU since September 2007 due to the cadet nursing before I moved onto the nursing course to gain a degree. ...I first discovered this great station on the way to watch a football match whilst stuck in a traffic jam - the misery of which was lightened by the good variety of music on Radio Jackie. Formerly A Pirate Station in the 1960s - 1980s Radio Jackie won an official licence in March last year after Thames Radio went bust and they took over the licence. More on this can be found at the bottom of the page by going onto their website. Music is generally upbeat covering decades from the 70s onwards, and is presented by good if not famous presenters.
