South London 1893: One Inch Sheet 270 (Old Ordnance Survey Maps - Inch to the Mile) - Richard Oliver

One Inch Sheet 270 South London 1893 - published 2011; intro by Richard Oliver. This Inch to the Mile map covers south London and much of north Surrey, with coverage extending from Westminster Bridge southward to Croydon, Sutton and Ewell, and from West Molesey and Hampton eastward to Beckenham and Lewisham. The map gives a splendid overall picture of London as it sprawls into Surrey and Middlesex, with a complex network of railways. It also gives useful general coverage to areas well covered by larger scale maps in The Godfrey Edition. On the reverse we include a detailed map of the village of Claygate. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. With such a busy area the list is necessarily selective. Kent: Beckenham, Penge, West Wickham. London: Barnes, Battersea, Camberwell, Chelsea, Clapham, Dulwich, Fulham, Greenwich, Hammersmith, Kensington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Putney, Southwark, Wandsworth, Westminster. Middlesex: Brentford, Chiswick, Hampton, Hanwell, Hanworth, Heston, Isleworth, Teddington, Twickenham. Surrey: Addington, Carshalton, Cheam, Chessington, Claygate, Croydon, Esher, Ewell, Hersham, Kew, Kingston upon Thames, Long Ditton, Lower Tooting, Merton, Mitcham, Morden, Mortlake, Petersham, Purley, Richmond, Sanderstead, Surbiton, Sutton, Thames Ditton, West Molesey, Wimbledon. ... less

This is the fourth in the highly popular Lost London series. It looks at some of the minor lines around metropolis. Some have gone and others survive but in a greatly changed state. Some had steam trains, others diesel or electric. Introduced by Jim Connor of the London Railway Record magazine, we visit the following lines and branches: West Drayton to Staines West. Uxbridge Vine Street on its last day. Hounslow West - the original station. Belmont to Harrow ("new" archive footage). Croxley Green branch and depot showing British Rail trains. The 1938 tube stock still running to Watford Junction. The line that never happened - Edgware to Bushey. The 1938 New Works - Huge concrete fly-over constructions were finally demolished and the Aldenham depot (Leyton Bus Works) was pulled down. Aylesbury High Street station on its last day. Underground now, Drayton Park Depot - last day of 1938. Tube trains, the Ongar branch, with three different films made in the steam era, and the story since then including the last train leaving in 1994. We followed what has happened with scenes filmed since. Kensington - Olympia steam services for Post Office workers. Then briefly - a tour of south London visits Bricklayers Arms, and Smithfield Market once had trains arriving in its basement at a special goods platform. We see meat going up in a hoist. New footage shot today shows the surviving remains. Coulsden North station and trains, Elmers End to Addiscombe and Wimbledon to West Croydon, closed recently, most of which will be incorporated into Croydon Tramlink. On the last day of service on both branches our cameras were at various locations. Witness the last train from West Croydon. Black and white and colour film Informative commentary throughout ... less

Independent Transport Videos follow up their filming of Routemasters in their 50th birthday year with further pursuits across London. The first filming session in January 2005 concentrates on route 36 from New Cross Gate up to Queens Park. We start outside New Cross bus garage and have a brief ride to Peckham on RM1062. We continue along Peckham Road, passing the High Street and Rye Lane (site of a former LT bus garage) towards Camberwell Green. Routemasters are featured passing both Camberwell bus garage and Walworth. From here we head up to the new Vauxhall bus station and capture the comings and goings at this interesting site. We briefly retrace our steps back to the Oval where 159s are seen crossing the paths of the 36s. The final part returns to Vauxhall bus station and continues across Vauxhall Bridge to Victoria. The second session of this film traces the last Routemasters operated by London General on the 14s and 22s. We take a 38 (RML2688) from Victoria to Tottenham Court Road before catching up with the 14s that turn at this point. We trace our steps through 'Theatreland' to Piccadilly Circus and Lower Regent Street, where we join up with the 22s. At Waterloo Place we see the 22s mixing with the 13s and 159s that also serve this part of the West End. After filming along Piccadilly we take a ride on RML2590 serving the 22 to Putney Common. At Putney Common we film the turning point as well as some Routemaster successors which are beginning to replace those that don't survive until their last day of service. We take a brief ride on RML2593 to Putney Bridge before filming RMLs in the Putney 'environs' as well as outside the bus garage. A further brief ride takes us on a 14 to the Green Man at Putney Heath which is the outer turning point for this route. We return to the centre of London and stop off at South Kensington where we capture the RMLs with the grand Georgian and Victorian buildings of the area as a backdrop. ... less

Edward Burra [DVD]
Edward Burra was born in South Kensington, London in 1905 and studied at the Chelsea School of Art (1921-22) and Royal College of Art...... more
Edward Burra was born in South Kensington, London in 1905 and studied at the Chelsea School of Art (1921-22) and Royal College of Art (1923). He was a member of Unit One (1 933), and took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition. London (1936). His paintings have been shown in many one-man exhibitions since 1929 and he has been the subject of retrospective exhibitions at the Hamet Gallery, London (1970) and Tate Gallery, London (1973). He was awarded the CBE in 1976 The film consists of a unique interview with Edward Burra, examples of his work, scenes from his daily life and interviews with contemporaries at an exhibition of his paintings towards the end of his life. The paintings shown include the satirical portraits of people in the bars and streets of Paris and New York from the 30s and 40s, and the more recent water colours of country roads dominated by huge trucks. In the interview Burra is evasive, showing his obvious distaste for the convention of exploring artists' personalities and often reducing the interviewer to banal questions about his daily life. Nevertheless at moments Burra is more revealing, particularly when he talks about his attitude to his own painting. This film was made in 1973, so the film and sound quality is not up to modern standards. This should not diminish its impact as a historic document. ... less

Art and Design for All reassembles some of the original core collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum to focus on its visionary approach and function as a role model for many other institutions around the world. This beautifully illustrated study places Prince Albert at the helm of the South Kensington project, the man whose vision and ambition gave us the V&A, the flagship of 'Albertopolis', London's cultural quarter for art, science and education. When Alan Banks receives a disturbing message from his brother, Roy, he abandons the peaceful Yorkshire Dales for the bright lights of London, to seek him out. But Roy seems to have vanished into thin air. Meanwhile, DI Annie Cabbot is called to a quiet stretch of road just outside Eastvale, where a young woman has been found dead in her car. In the victim's pocket, scribbled on a slip of paper, police discover Banks' name and address. Living in Roy's empty South Kensington house, Banks finds himself digging into the life of the brother he never really knew, nor even liked. And as he begins to uncover a few troubling surprises, the two cases become sinisterly entwined. 'The Banks novels are, simply put, the best series now on the market' - Stephen King. ... less

Camberwell Beauty - Jenny Eclair

Welcome to South London, to one of the nicest streets in one of London's vilest boroughs, a determined middle-class oasis of skips and bay trees, where Volvos sniff each others' bumpers and men called Giles live with women called Samantha. This is a satellite-dish-free zone of tall houses, standing shoulder to shoulder with big front doors, five floors apiece. Come inside, shut the door and smell the coffee: you could almost be in Kensington. This is where the actors, writers and media types live, where small children wearing smart uniforms and shoes in the shape of lightbulbs get ferried every day to schools that are not local. Some people are luckier than others; fortune smiles on some and gobs on the rest. Jo Metcalf (no. 95) smokes and spies on the smug Cunninghams down the street as they play their bile-inducing game of happy families. Why is the grass greener on the other side of the fence? But happiness is a fragile thing and hairline cracks in a perfect world can become craters of misery. Each story is full of comic insight and realistic observation of contemporary British life and focuses on the very different lives of a set of characters living in the same street. ... less

Sally Clarke's Book: Recipes from a Restaurant,Shop and Bakery - Sally Clarke
Is Sally Clarke the coolest chef in London? The answer would depend on a number of factors: the austere elegance of her restaurant / bakery / food ...... more
Is Sally Clarke the coolest chef in London? The answer would depend on a number of factors: the austere elegance of her restaurant / bakery / food shop in South Kensington; the fact that she was among the first, if not the very first, to import the subtly hedonistic, visionary Californian style of Alice Waters; that she herself would probably never even contemplate the question, and now Sally Clarke's Book. Clarke's cooking is of disarming simplicity, everything depending (rather unfairly, the supermarket-reliant home cook might feel) on absolute freshness and quality of organically grown ingredients. Famously, following the example of Waters at Chez Panisse, her menus offer no choices. But who would turn down "Parsley Soup with Morel Mushrooms and Crème Fraiche", "Slow-Baked Duck Leg with Onion Marmalade, Duck-Fat Roasted Potatoes & Bitter-Leaf Salad", or "Baked Vanilla Cream with Armagnac Prunes & Ginger Florentines"? Or "Soup of Five Tomatoes & Three Beetroots"? Or "Wild Mushrooms Baked in Cream with Gorgonzola Mascarpone"? Or "Baked Beans"? (Baked beans!) This is simplicity arrived at by distillation to essentials, by stripping away the non- essential. Clarke's food is seriously pleasurable. Any cook will learn a great deal from her book. The answer? Of course she is, but the question is meaningless. -- Robin Davidson ... less
