Advantages: covers many basic linguistic theories, includes activities and exercises to aid learning and development, very descriptive
Disadvantages: small font, can be hard to follow at times due to the bland-ish/ to-the-point factual information

Trask speaks my language!
Advantages: Interesting, engaging and informative
Disadvantages: Possibly slightly outdated now (but definitely still relevant)
