The Londonderry Arms Hotel. Co Antrim
Advantages: charming reasonably piced rooms and award winning food
Disadvantages: can get busy
...On a recent visit to Northern Ireland, I was lucky enough to be shown round by someone born and bred in Larne. It was on her suggestion that we paid a visit to the Londonderry Arms, a 3 star hotel with two restaurants in the charming and quaint harbour village of Carnlough. Carnlough is about 15 minutes drive north of Larne along the very picturesque coastal road otherwise known as the A8.
History
The Londonderry Arms has a rich and interesting history proudly available in leaflets amongst a wide selection of magazines free for perusal.
The Londonderry Arms Hotel was built in 1848 as a coaching inn by Frances Anne Tempest, Marchioness of Londonderry.
Frances Anne was the grand-daughter of Randall William, sixth Earl and second Marquis of Antrim. He was the great great grandson of Sir Randall MacDonnell, the first of that...

Londonderry - a revised opinion
Advantages: The city has come on, on leaps and bounds over the last few years
Disadvantages: City can still be divided on certain issues
...londonderry/Derry is probably the most historically seeped city out of the 3 to be found in Northern Ireland. Since the Good Friday agreement and subsequent cease fires, life in the Northern has never been better and Derry is certainly benefiting from it.
Redevelopment is obvious, house prices are soaring and there is building work going on every where - no green field is safe! We are now beginning to see major high street names arriving on the scene, something which would never have been considered.
Because of all this redevelopment and redeployment, the unemployment figures are falling for the first time in a long long time - at last people are getting the credit they deserve.
The people of Londonderry/Derry are a friendly bunch and will welcome strangers and tourists with open arms - always ready to tell a story or join in...

Wonderful hotel
Advantages: Very friendly staff, lovely hotel
Disadvantages: A bit of a walk to the shops
...Recently, (all of January), Ramada da Vinci's Hotel in Londonderry had a special offer.
The offer was £1 per night. Yes, £1 per night.
My partner found the offer on the internet and thought it was a mistake, so she applied for the offer, and it worked, so, we booked another couple of rooms for our friends for the two weeks after that.
The rooms are amazing, they have 2 large double beds, flatscreen tv, bath, power shower, fridge, iron, ironing board, fast ethernet internet connection, tea and coffee and 2 bottles of wine, (wine separate at £10 for a half bottle...)
Downstairs, the bar is one of them olde worlde bars, very dim, relaxing and full of antiques, the staff in the bar are very pleasant.
The restaurant is amazing, the food we tried was superb, very strong flavours in the sauces, and delicate flavours in the oils.
I had a 4...

Derry from my eyes
Advantages: How to get around derry
Disadvantages: theres loads
...about the city, if you are interested in this type of business.
There are many hotels in the city which are very popular with visitors, such as the tower hotel, city hotel.
One of the main entertainment venues in the city would be the Millennium Fourm situated on market street.

Cheap and cheerful
Advantages: Price of clothing
Disadvantages: Stores are always in a mess
...Primark is a national institution, in my home city of Londonderry! My mum swears by it! What can l say - stuff is cheap and generally of a decent enough quality.
It is excellent for holidays - cheap tops, shorts, bikinis etc. Why spend a fortune on such items.
My sister had her baby in August and has found it a god send of baby clothes especially when she grows out of clothing so quickly.
My only main issue is that of the store itself - there may be a staffing issue or lack of training - but why is every Primark store l go into always like a jumble sale? To find your correct sizes you really need to search - this is something l hate.
Apart from my one qualm, generally l like bargain shopping in Primark - like at Christmas l spent £12 on a fleece - and everyone asked me if l bought it in Next - where a similar fleece was...

Lovely County
Advantages: remote and quite
Disadvantages: you can be miles from facitilies
...What a lovely county - Donegal. Its remote setting provides the tourist with a great get away location. There is lots of green lands and piles of bog land in this county.
Donegal is the most westerly county in Ireland
- it lies with the Altantic Ocean on one side and borders with two counties in Northern Ireland - County Fermanagh and County Londonderry ( or Derry ) The Altantic provides the most amazing back drop - it has been known you can be lucky enough to watch the dophins in the sea at some points during the summer - NOt what you expect to see in ireland Hey !!
Donegal is ideal for those who enojy looking a amazing scenery and walking - there a few mountians in this county. This very remote county is a favourite of my parents who enjoy taking a sunday drive through it. ( beware of the odd sheep wandering about LOL...

VULTURES
Advantages: A quick payout for minor injuries
Disadvantages: People suffer in the long run through taxation and rising insurance premiums
...l suppose if it were not for this compensation culture so prevalent in Northern Ireland l would probably be out of a job! NO l am not an ambulance-chasing lawyer, so put your claws away! I work for a company who are constantly being sued – l work with the realms of the construction industry – l investigate these claims made.
My company, have undertaken major construction work through out Belfast, Londonderry and other arts and parts of the province. We are what’s know as a public utility and because we have carried out such works on the footways and carriageways we are the statutory undertaker, therefore even though we employ indemnifying contractors, liability ultimately lies at our feet.
People will sue for tripping on the footpath or roadway or over street furniture. Some are genuine some are bogus...

From the North, to the South...
Advantages: A noble and comparatively straightforward peak
Disadvantages: Clear weather desirable
...The most northerly point on the island of Ireland isn't in Northern Ireland. For sneaking around on its western blindside is slither of the south...the northern arm of County Donegal.
In the shade of Avalon...
The actual guilty party is Banba's Crown near Malin Head, the utmost extremity of the peninsular of Inishowen, near enough to Londonderry as to kid you it's not remote and 'other'. But it is. And south-west of here the remoteness and otherness continues apace: perhaps only the outer isles of Scotland can compare for uniqueness of atmosphere in our little corner of the globe. Here lies a sparsely populated network of lofty mountains and secret glens, reaching across to a coast dotted with townlands and pummelled by a merciless Atlantic. No settlements exist larger than villages, the wild and largely infertile land...
