A Native's View in a Long Review - Long Island

Advantages: Diverse, not NYC, interesting places, reasonably easy to get to
Disadvantages: The accent. There are areas of limited interest and economic hardship

...Are you from abroad...or at least from far away? Are you visiting New York City? I suspect you are planning on visiting shops, museums, tall buildings, and maybe even a big statue of a lady holding a torch. It is, however, entirely possible, that unless you have friends there, the suburbs on Long Island are not part of your plans. But perhaps they should be. Burcliffe-by-the-sea, Long Island NY

Advantages: peaceful, pretty and warm.
Disadvantages: Lot of the sales people in the outlet malls speak very little English

...Attractions: well Sir Paul McCartney wandering around the same shops as us, with his baby was a plus. The weather was fantastic. We expected cool/warm and got warm/hot.. We also struck lucky with the people and the place where we stayed. The shops were pretty cool too. Lots of outlet malls and high class shops. There are also plenty of delicatessens selling fresh coffee and really good clam chowder or other soups as well as bagels, filled rolls and the ilk. It meant lunch could be as cheap as making it at home and in my case tastier. Burcliffe is situated in Montauk near the very tip of the Island so to get anywhere you have a long ride through country roads and in this case country roads with deer unconcernedly leaping out in front of you. Advantages: Clearly written. Nice progression.
Disadvantages: Some tragedy but it all might end in something good, is that naive?

...At the time I went to spend my Christmas gift book tokens "The Island" was top of the paperback best sellers and that was why I bought it. The bookseller tried to put me off it, he said it was by that Hislop woman who he thought was the wife of some obnoxious T.V. critic. In fact it's by Victoria Hislop who writes travel features for the Sunday Telegraph, parenting and education for the Daily Telegraph and general features for Woman and Home. I don't know any more about her. It's published by Headline Book Publishing, cost £6.99, ISBN 0-7553-0951-0. I found a round sticker on it saying Richard and Judy's Summer Read and thought I might have got the wrong thing; the Observer calls it a "beach book" with a heart. ...A pleasant little film this one, not the greatest children's adventure film ever made, but a reasonable effort. Synopsis Nim is an 11 year old girl who lost her mother when she was a toddler. He father who's a writer and marine biologist told her she was swallowed by a blue whale which was on the run from a ship called the Buccaneer. Nim and her father Jack live on an island they discovered after sailing around the world for several years. They are the only inhabitants, unless you count a collection of animals which Nim has befriended, included a sealion, a bearded dragon and a pelican. Occasionally they receive parcels from the mainland which contain items they can't produce for themselves, some of Nim's favourite items are books, particularly those of the great adventurer Alex Rover. Dark island, the beer of Orkney

Advantages: Deep, smooth and fruity
Disadvantages: None apart from not being available in every pub

...and mysterious nature of Orkney's past symbolised by the use of the Ring of Brodgar standing stones as the bottle label-a ring of stones with an uncertain past. Dark Island is 4.6% ABV and has won CAMRA's Champion Beer of Scotland twice. It is made using Chocolate malt, crystal malt and wheat combined with First Gold and Goldings hops. The beer is quite dark with a hint of ruby red to it, although this is merely a background colour and not a bright tone as with Red MacGregor. The Long Goodbye

The book contains many autobiographical elements that relate to the author's own life. It has been ranked as one of Chandler's best works. The Long Goodbye was given the Edgar Award for Best Novel two years later in 1955. The novel begins outside a club called The Dancers. ...Although this is one of my favourite shops, i have to admit im not as much of a fan as what i used to be in my teens! At school i was nicknamed miss river island, as everything i wore was from there. Recently though, i find the collection of clothing a little more limited to certain styles than what it used to be. River Island caters for those who like to follow fashion whilst keeping their own twist on it so you can stand out from the crowd. They also have a very stylish menswear collection available. SIZES As i am petite, i love the fact that river island cater for the smaller girl with their range of trousers and jeans, the sizes range from a size 6 to an 18, and the leg lengths on trousers come in short, regular or long. This is ideal for many, but i recommend trying trousers on anyway as sometimes the lengths and waist sizes...
