Mistrial - Lou Reed
Advantages: a couple of decent songs
Disadvantages: too much avearge material and average production
...Arguably the least regarded Lou Reed album, Mistrial just seems to receive indifference from most people. It doesn't upset anyone, like Metal Machine Music did, nor does it excite audiences in the way that Transformer did.
Mistrial consists of ten average songs, played competently, sung ok, and produced ok. And that's about it. There's nothing that really stands out, the resolutely 1986 production utilises very basic drum machines for the first and last time in Lou's history, and everything sounds rather boomy and upfront, but hollow and lacking in substance.
The ttle track at least features a cracking melody, but Mama's Got A Lover, whilst not a bad song, sounds like a bad Lloyd Cole copy. A rather bizarre achievment sounds like a bad copy of someone who sounds like a bad copy of Lou Reed.
"Video Violence" has a sparky sound but...

Lou's Best Moment
Advantages: Totally original
Disadvantages: none
...Tracklisting
1. Berlin
2. Lady Day
3. Men Of Good Fortune
4. Caroline Says I
5. How Do You Think It Feels
6. Oh, Jim
7. Caroline Says II
8. Kids, The
9. Bed, The
10. Sad Song
I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone who has just bought Transformer because they like Perfect day or Walk on the Wild Side or anyone with just a passing interest in the man.
This is not an easy listen - its Lou Reeds concept album about the breakdown of a marriage between Jim & Caroline and the mental collapse that follows.
It was produced by Bob Ezrin - a legendary producer who has worked with everyone from Lou to Pink Floyd to Janes Addiction - and the album sounds like it was recorded in Reeds head.
Opening song Berlin sets the tone with its creepy opening bars and its sparse lyrics about how they met by the Berlin Wall...

Take No Prisoners (Live) - Lou Reed
Advantages: superb sound, superb performances
Disadvantages: a couple of songs drag a bit
...Lou Reed himself originally wanted to call this album Lou Reed Talk And Talk And Talks.
It's certainly an odd album, pitched midway between a straight live album and stand up comedy. There's over 100 minutes of music but only ten tracks which gives you an idea straight away that these are not simple live renditions of Lou's songs.
By 1978 Lou had pretty much come out of his mid 1970s drug period. He was still not entirely clean, but was in better shape than he had been for at least five years. He had a superb band behind him, led by keyboard player Michael Fonfara, and most of them had been touring with Lou for a few years. The musicians were capable of playing the most tender ballad before suddenly and shockingly roaring off like a locomotive at full speed. Lou had a habit of extending or shortening songs on a whim, but the band...

Young and Sexy ? Maybe .
Advantages: Good value , distinctive perfume , good packaging , different and quirky
Disadvantages: May be too strong and in your face for some .
...Lou Lou was the first perfume I ever bought from a duty free shop whilst on holiday abroad . At that time Lou Lou retailed at a much higher price in England than you can often buy it for today . I had already noticed this fragrance on a young colleague and would drive her mad every time I smelled it on her saying ,' Hmm what perfume are you wearing today '.
I think part of the reason for that was because although Lou Lou has a very distinctive smell at times it seems to appear different , even on the same wearer . One of the original attractions also was the packaging and bottle . Personaly these days I think that's crazy . Overall the actual smell must be the most important purchasing decision . However looking at a perfume as a product in all it's parts the packaging on LouLou is still unusual .
Unlike the photgraph above usually...

I JUST CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF IT
Advantages: Staying power, average price
Disadvantages: some find it too over powering
...Why is it that throughout the year, I usually find something that I need, but when asked to write out a Christmas list, I find myself having to think long and hard?
Well, I decided to look at my perfume collection to see which ones were running low. This particular perfume has been on the market for years and yet it is still one of my personal favourites and it’s called Lou Lou, which is made by Cacharel.
This perfume comes in a turquoise box, the bottle its self is an unusual shape a bit like pyramid, but hexangular design. The actual bottle is different from most, as it is not made from see through glass; it is coloured turquoise with a burgundy stripe for where the lid pulls off. Once the lid is removed it reveals the burgundy top, the spray nozzle is also the same colour. This scent comes in different sizes and is...

Tange Can be Girlie too.
Advantages: Lasts well. Relatively inexpensive for a perfume spray.
Disadvantages: A bit too strong for some people...so apply sparingly!
...I love my perfume and love to experiment with new fragrances. There are some perfumes, however, that I always return to; these are ones that I leave for a while, when I try new brands, but that I always seem to have in my bed-side cabinet.
Lou Lou is one of these fragrances! It was one of the first; in fact it WAS the first, "grown up" perfumes that I had bought for me. Before Lou Lou I had dabbled with Impulse and other body sprays. A relative bought me some Lou Lou back from her holiday, and I immediately liked the smell of it.
Lou Lou was launched back in 1987 by Cacharel, a leading French design house. The original bottle was designed by Annegrit Beier and the perfume itself by Jean Bousquet. Apparently it was inspired by a 1920's film star, called Louise Brooke.
There are many different products in the Lou Lou range...

Reed's Love Song To Poe
Advantages: Some good songs and performances
Disadvantages: Overlength, inconsistent and some bad performances
...So often formerly interesting and cutting edge musicians lack grace when entering their twighlight years. Prime examples would include Paul MCartney, Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart (yes, I think some of Rod's early work was both interesting and cutting edge). There seems to be a need to either keep up with kids or lose originality altogether. This has thankfully never been the case for Lou Reed who has remained constantly interesting, whether you like him or not, and this release from 2003 is no difference.
This record is essentially Reed's tribute to Edgar Alan Poe. Rife with guest appearances from the likes of William Dafoe, David Bowie, Ornette Coleman and Antony Heggarty, this is an intriguing if sometimes patchy album. Some songs are wonderful, others meander and he gets too involved in contrived spoken word in places. When it...

A Butcher's turned Eaterie
Advantages: Good food at very reasonable prices.
Disadvantages: Crowded at lunchtime with tables close together.
...Vying as it does with three other small restaurants on Southsea's Marmion Road, Lou Lou's is one that I had previously wanted to visit because of its apparent French feel. I hadn't done so, however, as I always seem to be in the area at lunchtime and Lou Lou's is inevitably crowded, with very little space between one table and the next. An opportunity arose one Friday afternoon when I bumped into my son as I was leaving work. Both of us were at a loose end and decided to have a bite to eat before shopping at Waitrose. As it was around 3.30pm, I thought Lou Lou's might be relatively quiet so we sauntered along to see if I was right.
A menu in the window was difficult to approach as both the outside tables were occupied. As we turned away, a waiter rushed out and handed us a menu to tempt us. The menu seemed varied with reasonable prices...
