Loughborough, Loughborough, Loughborough
Advantages: Friendly, great campus and facilities
Disadvantages: Not much in town
...First of all, one question for many people when they hear you say that you're going to Loughborough University is 'Where's that!' Loughborough is situated in the county of Leicestershire, and is a short train ride away from Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. it is a small market town, known for the University.
In terms of the town, Loughborough is fairly small, and doesn't have much to offer in terms of shops. There are a few nationwide shops such as Top Shop and New Look, but not any where near the amount of shops that reside in Leicester or Nottingham. Being a student, I've found this quite useful, as it doesn't encourage you to go spending money that you haven't got on clothes, as there isn't really anywhere to shop!
There are a few clubs in Loughborough town; Echoes, Wild, Rain and Discotheque. These are all fairly small, and so...

Don't go to Loughborough unless you love sport
Advantages: good bus through from the train station, to town and to uni. Nice single room accommodation.
Disadvantages: Far too sporty, Butler Court accommodation is appauling
...I chose Loughborough Uni as my first choice because it was high on the league tables and close to my home. When I visited the people seemed friendly and the accommodation I saw was nice.
However, when I got a place to study geography I was allocated to Butler Court halls of residence in a SHARED room. I had 3 choices to make for accommodation and this room was neither of my 3 choices. However, on the hope that I could change rooms when I arrived at uni I went ahead and moved into Butler Court during Fresher's Week. Biggest mistake of my life! It is so socially wrong to have to share a year of your life with a complete stranger, one of the most difficult years of your life as well when moving away from home for the first time and settling into a new routine, you need space to be on your own. During fresher's week my room mate didn't go...

Loughborough University
Advantages: Excellent sports facilities, Engineering department and Teaching standards.
Disadvantages: The nightlife in Loughborough town doesn't compare to a big city.
...I'm just coming to the end of my third year at Loughborough where I study Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying. My course is part of the Civil Engineering Faculty, which forms part of the University's Engineering Department.
My course is a four-year sandwich BSc Hons and I am sponsored throughout, basically, I get given a bursary of around £1,500 each year and I work for my sponsor in the summer. The third year is the sandwich year, which I am just about to complete, during this year I've been living and working in London.
One of Loughborough's great strengths is its strong ties with industry, most of the students on my course are sponsored, and this was set up by the University. The sponsors pay you good money when you're working for them and guarantee you a job when you finish your degree (which you don't have to take...

Loughborough doesn't always smell of roses..
Advantages: good facilities on campus
Disadvantages: sporty arrogance
...I am now about to go into my final year of Ergonomics at Loughborough, a subject most people have never even heard of! If you are considering Loughborough for either Psychology, Ergonomics or Human Biology, then this is a good choice of uni, as the department is small, friendly and very helpful.
Campus life is enjoyable, with plenty of facilities. Town however is limited. The only shops for females are New Look, Next and Dorothy Perkins, with bloke having the choice of Burtons or Next. There's a good market twice a week to pick up cheap bits and bobs, and once a year in October the town centre is packed with the biggest funfair I've ever seen.
Halls are good...and I won't mention the case of scabies between certain individuals in one hall a while ago!
The main problem with Loughborough is the sport. You don't have to be...

Loved it
Advantages: Nightlife, location, campus facilities, reputation
Disadvantages: Loughborough town is a bit dull after a while
...I attended Loughborough University 89 - 93 and had the time of my life! Not coming from a sporty background I still surprise people when I say that I went to Loughborough. But there is in fact loads to do for non sporty people. The nightlife focuses on the union which deserves it's reputation as one of the best in the country. Loads of top DJ's visit, free band nights and retro nights are all reqularly held in the union. Friday night is chart night, Saturdays are dance and during the week there's a host of other things happening.
Loughborough town itself is ok - but for more life, shops and buzz Leicester and Nottingham are not far away (10 miles either way). There is a great deal of support available and the campus is a really friendly place. Students make up 50% of the town and are well catered for - discounts are offered...

Friendly Banking at it's best
Advantages: Friendly service, Unpushy, Online Banking
Disadvantages: Small branch network
...I am a big fan of mutual financial providers and having initially been sceptical the Loughborough Building Society was an excellent choice.
It may not be a name that is as immediately recognisable as Nationwide or other high street mutual providers but you shouldn?t rule it out.
I can see that you are all stratching your heads thinking where is Loughborough, well having lived there for a number of very happy years it located at Junction 23 on the M1 and is Leicestershire?s biggest town.
The Loughborough Building Society has four branches in total, these are located in Long Eaton (Notts) and Derby and two in Loughborough. As the old saying goes, good things come in small package and LBS is no exception.
The society has a strong community emphasis and was started almost as a hobby back in 1867 for the benefit of the local...

Modern, Versatile University in traditional settings
Advantages: Quality, Versatility, Future Prospects
Disadvantages: none
...Loughborough University is classed as a "modern" University, gaining it's charter in the late sixties, after decades of success in engineering and sports. From stepping onto it's campus, the feeling of ease and comfort washes over you. Loughborough is based almost entirely on it's own campus, providing all the facilities required for the term of the degree. In some cases, I've known people not leave campus for the whole semester.
Loughborough is world renouned for it's success in Engineering & Science and Sports, with some of the greatest sportsmen having studied at Loughborough, including Sabastian Coe, and Steve Backley to name a few. After a recent acquisition of the Arts Department of Loughborough College, the University now has one of the finest Fine Art Faculty's in the country.
Everything is not study though, Loughborough...

I'm in the prospectus
Advantages: Campus uni
Disadvantages: The town is a bit naff
...I'm am about to go into my third year at Loughborough studying chemistry.
I absolutely love it and wouldn't go to a different uni now if you paid me. I can't describe what attracts me to it so much.
It's a campus uni which I have always preferred and because Loughborough is a town and not a city, it feels a lot safer and you can get to know more people. The town isn't the best in the world, with very few decent shops and nightclubs that leave a little to be desired, but the student union makes up for that.
I found when I first got to Loughborough, the hall rivalry was a major aspect of the social life, with different T-shirts for the freshers from each hall. Even now I have moved out of halls, affiliation is possible and you'll always be part of it until you leave.
There are all sorts of accommodation, shared, single, catered...

Not just sport
Advantages: facilities, hall life
Disadvantages: not located in big town
...OK, so sport is its most famous export, but there is much more to Loughborough, believe me! Despite what others may think, the University is one of the finest in the country, and it's not just for sport or engineering. The teaching standards are excellent, being joint top with Cambridge now, and we're quickly rising in all published University tables. The employment record speaks for itself, and employers absolutely can't get enough of our students. OK, you cannot avoid the sport aspect, and for those who aren't at the top of their sport there is the intramural programme, which features enough sports throughout the year and probably has teams which are better than some other University ones! But if you're not into sport, there are plenty of other things happening around campus. For example, the wide range of clubs and societies...

An outstanding university and not just for sport
Advantages: Friendly, communal atmosphere, excellent facilities all round, comfortable halls, low cost of living
Disadvantages: The campus is huge and my dept is the other side to Harry French, so I have to cycle every morning. Still, it's good exercise!
...I am in my first year studying Systems Engineering here at Loughborough, and I can honestly say I made a good choice. While I was researching all that time ago for which university and course to choose, I discovered that Loughborough has some of the cheapest accommodation available - the cost of living here is not high in comparison with other universities. This is very important for students like myself, especially now we are not given grants.
The university is contained on one huge campus - 216 acres if I recall correctly! This appealed greatly to me - it means I don't have to travel in for half an hour to get to my lessons each morning. Of course, sport is big here, and rightly so seeing as Loughborough has won the inter-university championships 21 years in a row (or something like that)! However, the university has an excellent...
