Meet me in St Louis

Advantages: Magnificent skyline. Lots to do and see. Wonderful music heritage.
Disadvantages: A number of attractions not wheelchair accessible

...We first approached St Louis at twilight and were immediately charmed by the unusual skylight dominated by The Gateway Arch which was bathed in a warm amber glow. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. The formidable imagination of Louis de Bernieres

Disadvantages: Surreal and dark: may not appeal to all

...Louis de Bernieres is certainly somewhere near the top of my favourite authors list (a list itself that only extends to six or seven writers – I’ve found so many more good books, but I’ve also found that one good book rarely means another one by the same person), and has risen to such an exalted position mainly due to his South American trilogy of which Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord forms the second. And for anyone who has read Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and wants some more of his writing (or for anyone who just wants a really good book) then I would heartily recommend this one, along with its two companions The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts, and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. Although I’ve read reviews claiming that this trilogy is not as sophisticated or mature as Captain Corelli...

Review of Louis Phaethon Beach Hotel, Paphos

Plunkett and Macleane soundtrack - Craig Armstrong

Advantages: Different, exciting and composed by a renound Electronica artist
Disadvantages: not a lyrical album with 'songs'

...This is an incredible soundtrack written for the 18th Century action/drama film Plunkett and Macleane starring Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Liv Tyler. It is composed by Craig Armstrong, also composer to some of the famous heavy instrumental tracks used in Baz Lurhman's Romeo and Juliet in1996 such as the track 'O Verona'. This whole sound track is in a very similar style to that of Romeo and Juliet in the sense that it uses so many different genres of music within one film. As the film is set in the 18th Century it seems a bit of an odd choice to ask Craig Armstrong to create the film score as he is known as an Electronica artist. Overall surprisingly it works though. This CD has some amazing tracks ranging in styles from Carl Orff's symphonic, apocalyptic methods, to Opera, to modern day dance tracks and calm/subdued background...

There's a She-Wolf in my closet...

Advantages: dark, exciting, enjoyable
Disadvantages: other supernaturals made it feel like a childrens book at times

...Stolen is the follow up to Kelley Armstrong?s ?Bitten? which was the first in her Otherworld series about the only female werewolf in the world. I said in my review of Bitten that I didn?t think the book had whet my appetite enough to read the follow up, but this one came up as a swap and I thought I?d give it another shot. I?m really glad I did, as it provided a totally different vibe than the first one and as a result, I?m likely to read the next (although again I won?t be going out and hunting for it!) Even if you haven?t read the first book, it doesn?t really take too long to catch up the narrator is Elena Michaels the werewolf herself, and she kindly and frequently briefs the reader when elaboration on a subject or sentence is necessary! However, I liked the fact that I already knew Elena?s personality, she is feisty and strong...
