The Jewel in the (Tarnished) Crown of Northampton
Advantages: Really rather gorgeous
Disadvantages: Only open one weekend per year
... A Diamond on a Dungheap
Northampton Guildhall is one of the most attractive buildings in this Midlands town although it's fair to say that there's not a lot of serious competition for that accolade. I managed to grab the opportunity of seeing inside the building without having to go to the trouble of getting married or needing an appointment with the Mayor. The Guildhall is in fact ONLY open to the public on the one weekend a year when the Heritage Open Days (HOD) scheme is running and many other local buildings such as the old law courts are also only accessible that weekend.
I've lived near Northampton for more than five years and the Guildhall had long been top of my wish-list for a visit. From the outside it's a strikingly beautiful and noble-looking building made of honey coloured stone with fine arched windows and carved...

IVE GOT GAS - OF THE LPG VARIETY
Advantages: Cost, Improves range, Energy reliance, green, improving technology
Disadvantages: Small amount of petrol to start
...My LPG conversion was installed a year ago I had being toying with the idea for a while. after hearing my partners uncle had it on a Lexus I took the plunge. 2 grand a small wheel like tank in tool slot at rear of vehicle and it was installed. The LPG can be switched between petrol and LPG and the fact you can have a tank of petrol and a tank of Gas gives your car a longer range. The LPG tank is full for £20 as oppose to £30 for half a tank of petrol - such a big difference but the car needs a small amount of petrol to start so I keep a quarter of a tank of petrol in usually just for that purpose. If you get the LPG system installed correctly the car doesnt suffer much loss in power. I was made aware of rally cars with 200hp engines running on gas and I also drove a converted vauxhall calibre that really flew, overtaking was easy...

LPG should you? My experiance as a guide.
Advantages: Cost if done right
Disadvantages: Cost if done wrong
...I have been running on LPG for a little over five years now, and covered a shade under 220,000 miles in two cars.
The first car was a Honda Accord 2.2 Coupe that had 65,000 miles on the clock when I had it converted to gas. Used was a cheap and basic OMVL kit. This basically converted an injection engine, into a carburettor engine by inserting little more than an open pipe into the inlet manifold, allowing the engine to suck the gas into the cylinders for combustion. Luckily the engine was powerful enough to start with to compensate for the resulting drop in power. There was a cylinder in the boot behind the back seats which made the boot one foot shorter, but I still retained the full sized spare wheel. The engine was from the ultimately reliable Honda stable so; all the problems that I could/should of have had with such a cheap...

Jack Barkers Golf Complex, Northampton, UK
Advantages: Pleasant complex and a nice way to spend the day.
Disadvantages: Not as well maintained as some courses in the area
...Welcome to my review of the Jack Barker Golf course, Delapre, Northampton. The Oaks Course.
The course is a 5947 yard par 69 course set over 18 holes on the outskirts of Northampton. The setting of the course is very pleasant as it is within the grounds of Delapre Abbey, or more properly, the Abbey of St Mary de Pratis which was one of only two Cluniac nunneries built in England
Hole 1. The first tee is set some 317 yards from the front of the green. There are two small bunkers set either side of your approach but a good straight drive will see you very close to the green in the winter and running off the back in the summer. The green is not very large and, like most of these ex municipal courses, lacking in grass. The first hole should be an easy par for all but the real novice golfer.
Hole 2. The second hole is a 414 yard par 4...

Literary Travels from Northampton
Advantages: Near London, Good Communications, Unspoilt countryside
Disadvantages: Lack of vibrant night life
...Many have enthused over Northampton's and the county's endowment of stone buildings, it's lovely Saxon churches and it's nice stone villages. Not too for nothing was it known as the County of Squires for many aristocratic families had family houses in the county, which also gained fame since the ancestral home of the late Princess Diana was in Northamptonshire. What, surprisingly, has been less well commented on, are the county's literary figures. Using Northampton as a base, this helps make it an interesting place for literary travelers to visit and this county lies only 60 miles north of London.
Northampton has produced a number of literary figures. America's first poet in English was a Northampton lass Anne Bradstreet. One, of the best known antiquaries of the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries was Vicar of Easton...

LPG Vehicles,Should you or Shouldn't you
Advantages: Cheaper fuel costs/extended service intervals
Disadvantages: Finding petrol stations that sell LPG
...At the time I was driving an Alfa romeo 145 Cloverleaf,Any one that knows of these vehicles are aware that they can be a little heavy on petrol with the 2.0 16v engine.A friend of mine suggested I look into an LPG conversion,I read a few reviews as I was not sure how a second hand car with 50.000 miles on would react,Decided that the car was worth investing in the price of the conversion.
My first dilema was what sort of tank to use,ie a doughnut tank in the spare wheel well or a free standing tank in the boot area,I wanted a fairly decent range on mileage so opted for a tank in the boot as the wheel well was to small to fit the size of tank I required.
The conversion was carried out by a local mechanic & other than a few teething problems with the initial set up I knew I had made the right choice. The car ran fine on the conversion...

Northampton:More than Cobblers!
Advantages: Good entertainment venues. Good shopping.
Disadvantages: Parochial
...I lived in Northampton for two years and found the town to be an interesting one. It was, of course, famous as one of the major centres of Britain's boot and shoe industry and the local soccer side, Northampton Town are even known as "The Cobblers."
Historically it was an important market town and there are some attractive old buildings in the town centre. The weekly market is excellent. In recent years it has expanded considerably as it was designated as an overspill town and new large scale housing estates were developed particularly in East Northampton.
Pride of place on the entertainment scene has to be accorded the modern Derngate Centre which attracts international show business figures and the very attractive Royal Theatre. There are a number of congenial pubs in town and in suburban areas such as Kingsthorpe, several good...

Having Essex LPG convert your Petrol car
Advantages: Cheap motoring, Cheaper VED (Road Tax)
Disadvantages: Time to convert it, lose a bit of luggage space
...considerably sturdier than a petrol tank and there are safety cut off valves that click in when the ignition is off. I'm no expert on this but I have used the kit for two months on two cars and it's been fine.
On the road. You start the engine on petrol and once it warms up it switches to gas. That's it. No input from you. There is a small postage stamp sized box on the dash that has LED's on it. One green and one red you're on petrol. Flashing red - it's switching to LPG . Two green - you're on LPG. There are four smaller green LED's that tell you how much gas you have in the tank. In the centre there's white button that you can manually switch to Petrol if you want and back. But it's not necessary to have any input at all- it's all automatic. Switch over is set to engine temperature and Rev's I believe.
Cost. My wife's Xtrail was...

56p -61p a litre!!!!
Advantages: Cheap fuel, reliable, good for the enviroment
Disadvantages: Takes up some space, only 1200 filling stations
...How would you like to pay 1995 prices again for your fuel? That is between 56p - 61p a litre! Too good to true? A gimmick? Not so, it's even encouraged by the Government.
There is no catch, if you want to pay these prices, consider having your car converted to run on LPG.
What is LPG?
LPG is short for Liquid Petroleum Gas, commonly known as Auto Gas, most petrol driven cars or vans (not diesels) can be converted to run on LPG which almost cuts your fuel costs in half.
Currently, there are around 140.000 cars running around the UK able to run on LPG & 11 million worldwide. With around 1200 filling stations with LPG facilities in the UK you are never far away from being able to fill up.
LPG is a by product of the extraction & refining of crude oil giving no burn off & it is very environmentally friendly. LPG vehicles emit less Co2...

Northampton: the town
Advantages: Plenty to do if you live here
Disadvantages: Not so much to do if you're just visiting
...Northampton is a large town of around 200,000 people situated in the East Midlands. Once known for its shoes (the football team is nicknamed 'The Cobblers), you are now more likely to find people here working for companies in the services sector such as Barclaycard or Nationwide. Having lived in a nearby village from October 1990 I would have to say that it is a good place to live. There are shops for everything you could need, most of which are located in the town centre but there are some other areas such as Kingsthorpe or one of the retail parks where shops can be found. There's plenty to do as well ? a large cinema with amazingly good value passes (as many films as you can see in four weeks for £15, or eight weeks for £25), several nightclubs, many pubs and bars, the Roadmender for gigs (recently we've had bands like Elastica...
