North By North West

Advantages: Cheap, wide connections, Drinks are on the house, available all the time
Disadvantages: Entertainment? Nice cabin crew! Unusual noises and lots of 'em

...had no idea (well - the family - yes, them - didn't) that NWA were a bit crap. So to get all the way back to Newcastle from Vegas, we had to fly to Memphis, change to an Amsterdam flight, then change at Amsterdam and fly to Newcastle. Now, I've only ever done a 3 hour flight (which I suppose can be classed as medium-haul, yes?) before to Spain. That was nice. With Air 2000, there was proper entertainment (TV screens and a superb radio network and also excellent food). But with NWA, a tired looking Airbus A320 (which is not a bad aircraft, you know - very reliable) sat out on the tarmac, still wearing the old livery. Onboard, the aircraft looked slightly unclean - well, perhaps uncared for is a better word. The 'Head of Cabin Crew', (which is hardly a big title since there were only two blokes serving onboard) was foreign...

The Standing Stones of North West Wales

Advantages: Well-written, well-researched
Disadvantages: None

...The Standing Stones of north western Wales by Michael Senior is, at 96 pages, a relatively slim volume. But what it lacks in size it makes up for by the breadth and depth of the knowledge that Michael Senior manages to fill this book with. Unlike far too many people in this field, Senior does not make unwarranted assumptions or presumptions. He gently chides (with good humour, it has to be added) some of the other researchers and writers. He cites, as an example, a notice erected by the ancient stone avenue at Avebury, in distant Wiltshire: "'This monument', states a notice at the stone avenue of Avebury, 'was erected in about 3,000 BC, for a unknown religious purpose.'" But Senior remains unconvinced by such guesswork. He goes on to say: "If un know, one immediately wants to ask, why assume it was religious?" Senior argues...

IVE GOT GAS - OF THE LPG VARIETY

Advantages: Cost, Improves range, Energy reliance, green, improving technology
Disadvantages: Small amount of petrol to start

...My LPG conversion was installed a year ago I had being toying with the idea for a while. after hearing my partners uncle had it on a Lexus I took the plunge. 2 grand a small wheel like tank in tool slot at rear of vehicle and it was installed. The LPG can be switched between petrol and LPG and the fact you can have a tank of petrol and a tank of Gas gives your car a longer range. The LPG tank is full for £20 as oppose to £30 for half a tank of petrol - such a big difference but the car needs a small amount of petrol to start so I keep a quarter of a tank of petrol in usually just for that purpose. If you get the LPG system installed correctly the car doesnt suffer much loss in power. I was made aware of rally cars with 200hp engines running on gas and I also drove a converted vauxhall calibre that really flew, overtaking was easy...

Great restaurant in North West London

Advantages: Great service and honest welcome
Disadvantages: None to report.

...The restaurant is an independent Nepalese or Indian restaurant, that specialise in preparing and cooking Nepalese cuisine to customers in Eastcote. Eastcote is located in North West London. The store is located on Eastcote High Street which is a quite posh and upmarket area of North West London. I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions including birthday and ordinary family celebrations at this venue. Located to the right of this shop is painting and decorating shop and to the left is a stationery shop. The thing other than the local and convenient access for myself in Eastcote is that I have really been taken in by the high standards of service throughout the meal ordering and serving process. The staff are professional, attentive and courteous. The main reason I like the restaurant was based on seeing the food freshly...

Diamond review  The Wilder West

Advantages: Unspoiled wilderness, fascinating sights and sites
Disadvantages: Persistent rainfall, persistent sandflies

...Having crossed the Southern Alps and reached the coast at Greymouth, you may be tempted to head south straight away. This is, after all, the direction in which the highest mountains, the deepest rainforest and the remotest tracts of wilderness are to be found. And if you haven't come to see mountains, forest and wilderness, you've come to the wrong place. Resist the temptation. First, cross the Grey River and take a small diversion up the coast to the north, just an hour's drive to the Paparoa National Park. You will thereby ensure that your first taste of the west coast is not the relatively drab and developed stretch immediately south of Greymouth (only relatively, since nothing along this coast is drab or developed by European standards). North of the Grey River the country is hardly touched, and the drive takes you round...

LPG should you? My experiance as a guide.

Advantages: Cost if done right
Disadvantages: Cost if done wrong

...I have been running on LPG for a little over five years now, and covered a shade under 220,000 miles in two cars. The first car was a Honda Accord 2.2 Coupe that had 65,000 miles on the clock when I had it converted to gas. Used was a cheap and basic OMVL kit. This basically converted an injection engine, into a carburettor engine by inserting little more than an open pipe into the inlet manifold, allowing the engine to suck the gas into the cylinders for combustion. Luckily the engine was powerful enough to start with to compensate for the resulting drop in power. There was a cylinder in the boot behind the back seats which made the boot one foot shorter, but I still retained the full sized spare wheel. The engine was from the ultimately reliable Honda stable so; all the problems that I could/should of have had with such a cheap...

Radio Borders - Scottish Borders and North Northumberland

Advantages: Good presenters. Local news. Great music.
Disadvantages: Takes networked shows during evening and night. No frequent news service on the hour after 7pm.

...I live outside of Radio Border's transmission service area, but can still receive this station quite clearly on 96.8 (from the Selkirk transmitter) in my home town of Prudhoe in the Tyne Valley. Radio Borders is a full-service station, playing music from the 60's to todays current chart sounds. Radio Borders is a 24 hour station with local content from 6.00 AM until 7.00 PM Monday to Friday. At weekends, this extends to 10.00 PM. Programmes from 6.00 PM on Saturday and 7.00 PM on Sunday are generally of a specialist nature. After this, the station links up to Clyde 1 for the overnight sustaining service, primarily playing current chart sounds and a talk show. Radio Borders also takes Hit40UK (Network Chart Show) on Sunday 4.00 PM until 7.00 PM. Local news is on the hour until 7.00PM....

Wanted - Ancestors in the north west of England!

Advantages: Totally free service, decent site search facility, new records added reguarly
Disadvantages: Not fully comprehensive, otherwise none

...with a simple map of the county demonstrating that Lancashire once extended to Liverpool in one direction and north towards the Lake District in another. For those who would like to get actively involved, the next link on the list is headed Volunteer Opportunities - I did attempt this once and discovered that transcribing records just wasn't amongst my strengths, but it might suit some people better than others and I think it's a good idea to encourage visitors to interact with the site and help to increase the number of available records. The Links page is not one that I regularly visit, but it is worth a look because it gives details of other family history resources and other county online parish clerks (Leicestershire, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Essex are amongst them) but it is worth bearing in mind that some of these other projects have been...

The North Pier, Blackpool

Advantages: Lots of fresh air, fully accessible by disabled visitors
Disadvantages: A small admission charge

...If you think about the main English seaside resorts then the chances are that they will have a pier. There is something very quintessentially English about seaside piers and in Britain they are largely restricted to England, with a handful in Wales and none at all north of the border in Scotland. Blackpool in the north west of England is unusual because it boasts three different piers. The North Pier, Central Pier and South Pier. As its name suggests The North Pier has the most northerly location of the three. It is also the oldest pier in the town and at 503 metres long it is also its longest pier. Eugenius Birch was drafted in to design The North Pier. He had been responsible for the design of Britain's first seaside pier at Margate. This was his second pier project and following its success he would go on to design a further...
